American charged with trying to sell F-5 to Iran from Warplanes Online Community by Jobelle | When a certain F-5 Tiger fighter jet outlived its military use years ago, it was sold for surplus, and the plane became the toy of a rich Californian. Female Licensed Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics | Nerds in Babeland from nerdsinbabeland.com | For those who don't know me, I have worked in aviation and aerospace for the past decade. In October, I volunteered for a layoff from my job as a technician on the Space Shuttle Program, as it is coming to an end soon. I am very much a space advocate, and have been using Twitter to share my enthusiasm for space for over two years. I am also the founder of the Space Tweep Society, a growing group of space enthusiasts on Twitter. Due to that role, I am often asked to participate in interviews or space outreach activities, many with the goal of encouraging girls to pursue careers in science or technology. This leaves me feeling quite conflicted because I'd love to have more women in aviation and aerospace, but in my experience breaking into these fields was really rough. I almost feel guilty for encouraging them, knowing what kind of obstacles they may face.

USAF re-orients frustrated jamming strategy
By Stephen Trimble/Washington DC
The US Air Force has dramatically changed the focus of a frustrated, decade-long attempt to revitalize its ability to jam radars and communications systems.
After abandoning a second attempt earlier this year to convert some Boeing B-52Hs into standoff jamming platforms, the USAF investment strategy has shifted to fielding less expensive "stand-in" systems that could be delivered within a few years.

Airplane Smell: The scent of man’s winged history from The Airplane Blog by 500knots
I have been in love with WW2 era airplanes since I could walk. But as I grew older in age and knowledge of the aircraft themselves, and then having flown a few … I began to realize that what I love most about them now is the human element and the real human history behind them. After all, iconic aircraft would not be icons or even exist if you-and-I type of people didn’t build them, fly them … and love them…

January from Patty Wagstaff
...Backing up for a little airshow history, airshow performers or barnstormers used to be paid by the "gate." If they attracted a lot of people, they'd be sure to get paid (unless the promoter snuck out the back with the cash). I like the idea of the added incentive for the performer to bring people in. These days, and really for the best, the airshows generally have the money to pay the performers in advance and the money comes from local and national sponsors, so the "gate" or "ticket" money is gravy and profit for the airshow. In times of poor economy (today) airshows have a harder time getting sponsorship money to pay for the performers. On the other hand, local entertainment venues (eg airshows) have increased attendance during times of poor economy (again today!). ...

Wierd, wacky and FAST: MTM's First Monthly Fly-in from Mojave Skies by Alan Radecki
The Mojave Transportation Museum Foundation today hosted the first of what is expected to become a monthly fly-in and open house at Mojave. The event allows aircraft owners to display their unique and/or historical aircraft to the public, and harkens back to the days when the local airport was a friendly, exciting place to visit. The weather was warm and spring-like (January in Mojave - eat your heart out, rest of the world!), which resulted in 30 aircraft ranging from warbirds to some of the fastest glass in the air, on display and a surprisingly large crowd wandering the flightline, getting up-close-and-personal. Cory Bird's stunning Symmetry, above, was this fly-in's featured aircraft (look for it to be featured in an article here in the next few days).

Battle of Britain veteran back in the air ... from Technorati
A feel-good story from an airshow yesterday in the Wairarapa. The veteran hero was originally slated to fly in a spitfire, but unfortunately it was pranged during a practice the day before. I thought his comment about the kittyhawk engine interesting, and is probably an opinion that he, and his fellow heroes, had back in the '40s and remains unchanged today. This short clip (from TV3 News has the story. (The spitfire was only slightly damaged and will be back in the air soon.)

Wings over Wairarapa 2009 from Technorati
Yes, it’s air show season again and Wings over Wairarapa 2009 has kicked off the year in, well, very average style. On the whole, it was worth spending the day in the moderate heat and wind, but it wasn’t as exciting as promised. The star attraction - Doug Brooker’s Spitfire - was of course absent after its unfortunate mishap on Thursday. The RNZAF failed to bring anything larger than a King Air (which was hidden away until after the show!), and many of the more delicate WWI-era aircraft were

Flight 1549: Skill and Drill, Skill and Drill from Joe Sharkey At LargeRachel Maddow, on her nightly news and opinion program on MSNBC, adroitly picked up the right theme about the US Airways crash in the Hudson River. She stressed that a skilled, drilled and ready force of civilian and governmental first-responders was the heart of that amazing rescue -- and that this is the essence of that aspect of "homeland" security.

Lackland Airfest 2008 from www.airshowbuzz.com
Just got in from the Sunday show and it was "Awesome". Just a little warm but other than that everything was perfect. The Horsemen made a surprise apperance and show. Thanks Ed and Dan. "Max" Moga and the Raptor had their usual outstanding performance. Ed Hamil and Greg Poe was at their outstanding aerobatic best. And the "Blues' minus 1 (#4) filled the air with excitement. Also got to meet "Zeke". He will be the next Raptor Pilot. A real nice and classy guy, the Air Force really knows how to pick them. Tora group put alot of explosions and smoke on the base. And a "Big" surprise to see the P-39 "Airacobra" from the Centex Wing of the CAF in San Marcos, TX fly in their re-enactment of Pearl Harbor.

This is the new version of the F-15E designed for the Singapore Air Force, featuring the APG-63(V)3 active electronically scanned array (AESA) and infrared search and track (IRST). The reportedly Israeli electronic warfare gear, mounted on the tail-exhaust booms, are conveniently hidden from view because of the way Boeing angled the roped-off aircraft.
