Striving Across Sea, Sky and Space  from Hiller Aviation Museum by hillermuseum | Aeronautical Prizes from Louis Bleriot to Burt Rutan  By Jon Welte  …In 1996 an organization that would eventually become the X Prize Foundation was formed. Its mission was simple: establish a prize for a reusable airplane able to carry a human being to an altitude of 62 miles (100 kilometers). Such heights had been reached by rocket planes before, most notably the North American X-15 research airplane that flew as high as 67 miles during a 1960s research program. The X-15, however, was a multiyear program funded by NASA and the USAF. The Ansari X Prize was reserved for a privately-funded endeavor. Within a decade, the prize was won by a team headed by maverick aeronautical engineer Burt Rutan…

2011 Australia Day celebrations - Northern Rivers News
January 26 has always seemed a strange day to celebrate Australia Day. While it is the day Captain/Governor Arthur Phillip planted a Union Jack in the sand at Sydney Cove in 1788, he was only claiming a bit of the continent for the British king. And surely we didn’t become a nation anyway until the colonies all got together and sorted out their differences in 1901? Even the name ‘Australia’ wasn’t adopted until 1824. ...

The Achilles Heel of the Douglas B-66 Destroyer from Aviation Trivia of the Day
The B-66 Destroyer ended up only resembling the A-3 Skywarrior
In January 1952 when the US Air Force issued its official General Operational Requirement (GOR) for a tactical bomber and reconnaissance jet aircraft to replace the Douglas B-26 Invader and the "interim" Martin B-57 Canberra, the selection of a minimum change version of the Douglas A3D Skywarrior as the B-66 Destroyer made sense. Douglas's proposed changes weren't all that major- deletion of the folding wings, catapult gear and arresting gear, addition of ...

What will your plane look like in 2025? from Plane Talking
The name Lockheed has not been heard in relation to commercial passenger aircraft for some time. Their last passenger aircraft, the L1011 TriStar, ended production in 1984 and the company, now called Lockheed Martin, has since focused on the military (although it does provide many civil transport systems and components). It was interesting, therefore to see that they were one of the teams to be tasked with developing NASA's vision of the future of commercial aviation, along with our friends at Boeing and Northrop Grumman (another mainly military supplier). The design above is their proposal for an aircraft that meets NASA's goals for ...

Idaho A-10 Unit Repeats as Hawgsmoke Champion from AFA Daily Report | The Idaho Air National Guard's 190th Fighter Squadron has taken top prize in "Hawgsmoke 2010," the Air Force's biennial A-10 competition, repeating its winning performance from 2008. The Idaho Statesman reports that the Idaho unit bested 17 other USAF A-10 teams that flew in from across the globe to Gowen ANG Base in Boise to compete in the bombing, missile, and tactical gunnery activities at the Mountain Home Range complex on Oct. 14. Overall, more than 40 A-10s participated, and more than 200 pilots and maintenance personnel. The Idaho Air Guardsmen got to host this year's event since they won Hawgsmoke 2008 in Salinas, Kans. Unlike in 2008, fleet-wide maintenance issues did not hamper the ability of some A-10 units to participate. (See also Boise report by TSgt. John Orrell)
