Idaho A-10 Unit Repeats as Hawgsmoke Champion from AFA Daily Report | The Idaho Air National Guard's 190th Fighter Squadron has taken top prize in "Hawgsmoke 2010," the Air Force's biennial A-10 competition, repeating its winning performance from 2008. The Idaho Statesman reports that the Idaho unit bested 17 other USAF A-10 teams that flew in from across the globe to Gowen ANG Base in Boise to compete in the bombing, missile, and tactical gunnery activities at the Mountain Home Range complex on Oct. 14. Overall, more than 40 A-10s participated, and more than 200 pilots and maintenance personnel. The Idaho Air Guardsmen got to host this year's event since they won Hawgsmoke 2008 in Salinas, Kans. Unlike in 2008, fleet-wide maintenance issues did not hamper the ability of some A-10 units to participate. (See also Boise report by TSgt. John Orrell)

High Power Rocketry – What's Your Neighbor Building In His Garage? from Parrothead Jeff | High power rocketry is an interesting hobby / mental illness. ONE-WING LANDING - This is the most remarkable demonstration of piloting skill and level-headedness I have ever seen. You won't believe it! - Note the brilliant flying of this German acrobatic pilot. Without one wing, he flew the plane on its side so the wing became a rudder and the rudder the attitude control--then just before landing, rolled to upright. He might have been too low to bail out. A super slow roll teaches you the way the rudder can keep the nose up while on your side. Hoover is a pro at this. Howie Keefe (of Miss America P-51 fame-rco) PS: Thanks to Joe Landsen for this one. Another one wing landing. It's not a model this time; it's the real thing. Again, you will not believe your eyes! CLICK http://www.chilloutzone.de/files/08102703.html

Wings Over Houston - Thunderbird Close-Up from Serious Amateur Photography by Jeff Lynch - Here’s another image from last weekend’s shoot at the Wings Over Houston air show. This Thunderbird F-16 had just completed it’s takeoff maneuver and was beginning a vertical ascent so it was only traveling 200 mph or so. The more of these images I review in Lightroom 2, the more impressed I am with Canon’s EF 300mm f/4 L IS USM lens. The sharpness of this glass is superb and I’ve found almost no chromatic aberration or vignetting in the images I took.
