Hello Plane Folks,This week I bring you a short essay on what it feels like to lean out the open end of a B-25 to get up close and personal with the P-51 "Lady B". It's the last of my essays about my experiences at the Gathering of Mustangs and Legends, which was held back in 2007. I decided to publish it to mark announcement of the GML's new web site--
http://www.gatheringfoundation.org/ You'll also notice that MaxAir2Air looks a bit different. I've updated the site to prepare it for the ability to put advertising on the "Connections" page. It's about time that the site earned its keep, so-to-speak. Also on the Connections page, you'll find a wordless essay on the Lone Star Air Museum, before the Hurricane struck. Ugo Crisponi is a famous Italian illustrator who manages the
AVIATIONGRAPHIC.COM, a guild of Aviation Artists & Illustrators offering more than 1.500 Squadron Prints, Lithographs, Illustrations and Aviation Art. Most of them are official lithos expressely made for U.S. Air Force, U.S. NAVY, U.S. MARINE CORPS, Luftwaffe, KLU, HEER, AMI, and lots of other Squadrons and Airborne Law Enforcement Units worldwide, from Italian State Police to Sacramento Police Department, Dutch Aviation Police, Italian Carabinieri Nuclei Elicotteri, Calgary Police Air Services, Gainesville Police Department, etc. Ugo designed the following collection of profiles that are particularly interesting since they show different colour schemes, configurations and markings of the F-104 G, S, ASA and ASA-M of the Aeronautica Militare (Italian Air Force, ItAF). They are useful for both modelers, historians and Starfighter enthusiasts. Each profile has a corresponding artwork (or ” Squadron print”) that contains information of the depicted Squadron. The collection of F-104 prints, courtesy of Aviation Graphic, is available at the following page: http://cencio4.wordpress.com/f-104-prints/.

U.S. Pilot Fired On UFO During Cold War from AVwebFlash Current Issue
Classified British documents from 1957 that were released this week reveal that a U.S. fighter pilot flying from an English air base was ordered to open fire on a massive unidentified object that had lit up his radar screen. Retired pilot Milton Torres, of Miami, is not named in the documents but has long maintained that the incident took place. Torres was flying an F-86D Sabre and was told to fire all 24 of his rockets at a mysterious object visible on radar above the North Sea. It was moving erratically and was almost the size of an aircraft carrier, according to the documents. It appears to be the only time that a military aircraft has been ordered to fire on a UFO. "It was an amazing night, and I never thought the truth would be told," Torres said. "But I still don't know what it was." He told Sun Media that he believes the unknown aircraft -- which he saw only as a radar blip -- was a spaceship. "I don't believe it was of this Earth," he said. "It moved faster than anything we were capable of." As he closed in on the blip's location, it vanished from his instruments, he said.

I'm Off to "Biggin on the Bump" for a few days in June The following is a personally satisfying excerpt from a review of the 2005 Air Display (air show) at Biggin Hill, the famous, Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Fighter Station South of London. Biggin Hill is often remembered as "Biggin on the Bump" because of the hump in the middle of its original grass airfield. It was established as a RAF testing station in 1915 and has become an international jet port. Biggin has served up some of the finest air displays in British aviation history. The fact

Tumbling Bear Airshow Pilot Survives Modesto Crash from AVwebFlash Current Issue - Airshow performer Rob Harrison Saturday crashed his Zlin 50LX while performing at Modesto airport, and though one witness told a local ABC news channel, "the plane just went all to pieces," Harrison, 66, survived the impact with serious injuries. The pilot, nicknamed "The Tumbling Bear," was performing a rolling maneuver at low level near the end of his routine when the aircraft touched the ground and slid for about 100 feet before coming to rest on its side, relatively far from spectators. A crowd of about 4,000 people witnessed the crash and stayed to watch remote-control aircraft perform following Harrison's evacuation by helicopter to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. Harrison was reported Sunday to be resting in stable condition. Details of his injuries were not released.

The "Tumbling Bear" fills the sky with twisting and tumbling smoke trails that display Rob's aerobatic talent and the capability of the Czech built Zlin 50LX. Upset Training Aircraft Crash Kills Two from AVwebFlash Current Issue - An Extra 300L operated by Aviation Performance Solutions LLC (APS) crashed Friday, killing two aboard. APS offers upset recovery and spin training. APS instructor Jim "Clap" Clapper was killed in the crash along with another pilot identified by a local CBS news affiliate as "an experienced commercial pilot." Clapper is a former F-4 and F-105 pilot. He had 20 years and 1,400 hours experience flying competition aerobatics, with 8 years flying competitive unlimited aerobatics. In 1995 Clapper was Arizona State Champion -- Advanced Aerobatics. Clapper was employed with the school as an instructor in aerobatics, upset recovery and spin training. The aircraft was returning from a training flight when it crashed approximately eight miles east of the Phoenix/Mesa Gateway Airport in Arizona. "The type of maneuvers they were doing during that flight were very basic, nothing advanced," said Paul Ransbury, president of APS. "It is clear that numerous families were affected by this terrible tragedy," he said. "Our deepest sympathies and prayers are with all of those who were involved in this tragic accident and their families."

Last Surviving Crew Member of the Enola Gay from Military Photos - General Discussion by Hilbert - This weekend the National World War Two Museum, formerly the D-Day Museum here in New Orleans gave host to Captain Theodore VanKirk, the navigator and last surviving crew member of the infamous "Enola Gay" B-29 that dropped the Little Boy Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima. In addition to telling stories of his adventures, the man was also signing autographs for a recently published book "The 509th Remembered -- A History of the 509th Composite Group as told by the Veterans that Dropped the Atomic Bombs on Japan," and doing pictures. http://www.nationalww2museum.org/cal...iew/1210395600
As I live in Metairie, just across the river from New Orleans, I had the honor and privilege of going to meet Captain VanKirk. He signed the book I purchased, we took a picture together, and when all was said and done sat down and had a short conversation. Truly an incredible man with awesome sense of humor. Sorry for the late posting of this, it's been an exceptionally busy day -- it is Mothers Day here in the United States after all. P.S. Pictures of Captain and Book to follow.

Only 3 more weeks to enter the AirVenture Cup Race! from DailyAviator by Dennis Collins
Deadline is May 31 for entry! I’ve procrastinated getting the Lanciar going for months now, so I’ve got to crank it up. Sometimes you need a better excuse to participate in the flying game besides “100 dollar hamburgers”. One of the racers at a past AV-Cup race said that air racing “gave his airplane a mission”. I now have a mission, to get the Lancair back in the air and go after the gold!
This year the race will be from Mitchell SD to Lomira WI, just south of Oshkosh (ignore the info on the AVC web site about Dayton, that was last year and the web site hasn’t been updated).

Departed Westbound - Jim Siemens from DailyAviator by Dennis Collins
We just got back from the “Red Onion” the local bar and grill nearest AZ82, Mogollon Airpark, where we hoisted a few in honor of friend, neighbor, pilot and great aircraft mechanic Jim Siemens, who died last week from natural causes. Jim was one of the nicest people here at the airpark. He spent time up here in the cool pines at 6600 feet during the summer, and winters in Yuma Arizona, where I believe he once owned the Harley Davidson dealership. Jim built two airplanes that I know of, a Lancair 320 and a Rotorway Helicopter. And he also spent considerable time in the 1990’s restoring the Aeronca “City of Yuma” to flying condition, a record breaking airplane that set a worlds record in 1947, flying non-stop for 46 days. He will be missed by a whole airpark full of friends.
