Open Letter to Our Air Race Fans - Reno Air Racing Association | Dear Air Race Supporters, On the heels of a spectacular and historic 50th National Championship Air Races, the Reno Air Racing Association (RARA) is looking forward to the next 50 years. This year's event marked a recovery from the many emotional, financial and operational challenges of the last three years. The crowds were back, the weather was good and the racing was thrilling and safe. However, as we work to build for the future, we are faced with a set of significant challenges posed in the wake of a third year of financial losses. As a not-for-profit organization, RARA is committed to preserving and growing air racing and we are dedicated to creating long-term financial sustainability. As such, we have carefully evaluated our current financial position and we have been forced to make some agonizing and difficult decisions. Effective immediately, we have implemented furloughs and wage and benefit reductions on all RARA staff. Additionally, we have made the heartbreaking decision to eliminate certain positions....

Wright Brothers History Questioned by Gustave Whitehead Historian | TIME.com | ...Without Jane’s involvement, Brown’s research and website – gustave-whitehead.com – would’ve likely been relegated to the far reaches of the Internet. With Jane’s on board, however, Brown appeared to have tipped history’s scales in favor of Whitehead for the first time. But a number of aviation historians and academics are lining up against Brown, including those at the Smithsonian, the longtime home of the Wright Flyer. “When you get right down to it, to the Whitehead claim, there is – no – evidence,” says Crouch, the Smithsonian’s curator. “None.” Born in Dayton, Ohio, where the Wright Brothers grew up and tested many of their planes, Crouch has been with the Smithsonian for almost four decades. He wrote a book chronicling the Wrights’ achievements as well as a history of aviation from kites to manned space flight. In 2000, President Bill Clinton appointed Crouch to the Chairmanship of the First Flight Centennial Federal Advisory Board....

Records and Racing

by Marilyn Dash

Progress is being made, say officials for the Reno National Championship Air Races (RARA). Last month, RARA met with the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority (RTAA) to discuss obtaining the permits needed to hold the event at the Reno-Stead Airport in September.

RTAA is the owner and operator of the Reno-Tahoe International and Reno-Stead Airports. It is governed by a nine member Board of Trustees. In this meeting, Mike Houghton, president of RARA told the airport officials that he is "totally satisfied" with the direction the board is taking in considering the permits.

Only two people spoke up against RARA at the RTAA meeting, both have had previous anti-RARA episodes. One of their stated concerns was the NTSB will not complete its probable cause report before the planned September 12th start of the 2012 event. This is quite standard; the NTSB generally takes up to 3 years to investigate such an accident.

The permits from RTAA is just one of the hurdles RARA needs to manage before the Pylon Racing Seminar in June and the Races in September can be held.

The next hurdle is the Air Racing Waiver from the FAA. This allows us to create the airspace necessary to hold such an event. Waivered airspace allows us to exceed the normal speed limits, fly in “close proximity” to other aircraft, etc. These two key items are essential to holding the event. But, they are not the only things on the task list.

In March, the annual Presidents’ Meeting will be held to share the “State of the Races” with each of the racing classes. This meeting should shed additional light on the issues being faced. As news becomes available, I will share what I can.

Speeding and Climbing

In the meantime, Rare Bear has joined Steadfast in trying to break FAI records. We mentioned earlier that Will Whiteside in Steadfast set the 3km record in their weight class, previously held by the Hughes H-1 Racer.

Now, Rare Bear will also go for the 3km record in their weight class sometime this summer. Lyle Shelton set the record in Las Vegas on August of 1989. It currently sits at 528 mph/850 km/h. Lyle also set the “Time to Climb” record - standing start to 3,000 meters (approximately 10,000 feet) - in 91.9 seconds. We do not have word yet if this is part of the plan, but I bet it is. Having Rare Bear break its own record would be a terrific boost for the team. We wish them luck.

Rare Bear out to break their own FAI Records

But, Steadfast shall not be outdone. Will Whiteside will also be going for the “Time to Climb” record in Steadfast. He just set the “Speed over straight 3KM course – internal combustion engine, class C-1d at 669.53. Now, he is looking to topple the “standing start to 3,000 meters. The current record was set by Russell Hancock in a Piper Navajo Piper at 3:33 in 1978. The record has to be broken by 1%.

Will Whiteside in Steadfast also breaking records

Keep in mind that Steadfast is much smaller than Rare Bear and that is why there are two completely different records to be broken. Both are under the Class C, for Internal Combustion Engine, but have different payloads.

Knowing the competitive nature of the Unlimited Teams, we’re wondering if Strega will come out of the hangar to see if she can snag the record away from Rare Bear. Or, maybe Czech Mate sees a future in record breaking. Only time will tell.

Other news

The Trailer for Air Racers -3D is now available. You can see it on You Tube and the trailer will likely be playing at local IMAX theaters to gather some momentum. The last word we received was an April 5th release date in the USA. I know we are putting together a viewing party the minute it hits my area. I will keep everyone posted about details like when you can see this movie and where to get more information about seeing it in your area. It should be amazing, flying with Steve Hinton in Strega in 3D!

Also, Pete Law will be speaking at this year’s NAG (National AirRacing Group) Banquet. Pete has a long history with air racing and aviation. He started in the business with Lockheed in 1959 to work on the F-104. He was then recruited to Skunk Works to work on such famous aircraft as the SR-71, U-2 and the F-117. Darryl Greenamyer recruited Pete to join air racing and we are sure glad he did. Pete is a fixture in the Pits each year helping nearly all the teams with their ADI systems.

Pete Law meeting with Tiger and Bob Button

As always, we look for good news from RARA and in the meantime, we’ll keep and eye on the records and events coming up.

Until then, Fly low, Fly fast and Turn left.

2011 Performers Highlight - F-22 Raptor

Photo by Clark CookA good pilot knows that there is always room for improvement; there is a never-ending quest to take the next step.  America's best and brightest aeronautical engineers felt the same way and they took the next step when they created the F-22 Raptor.

The Raptor is the future realized, a plane so versatile, so capable and so hard to comprehend, no two descriptions are ever the same. Witnessing the Raptor in action begs the question, was the technology that allows this plane to do what it does, invented before the words to adequately describe those actions were?

The Raptor defies the fundamental principals and forces that govern flight. When the Raptor makes bank turns, the deftness of which might only be exceeded by a hummingbird, or hovers sideways in mid-air, everything any high school physics teacher ever taught about thrust, lift and drag comes tumbling out of the sky; the Raptor, however, cruises forward, reinventing the possibilities of manned flight.

The F-22 Raptor employs a state-of-the-art thrust system that allows the aircraft to pivot 360 degrees in all directions at practically any speed. This remarkable aircraft comes fully stocked with the most sophisticated weapons, navigation and computer systems to ever take the sky and, with afterburners, is said to be able to top Mach 2.  To top it off, the F-22 is cloaked in the world's newest stealth technology, including a thin neoprene-like, radar-absorbing coating that makes the plane virtually undetectable by even the most advanced radar systems.

A description of the F-22 Raptor could go on to depict a litany of technological innovations, a roster of unreal statistics and specifications, and a flight manual's worth of aeronautical limitations shattered. However, words will never do the F-22 justice. The only way to fully grasp what this plane can do, the paradigm shift it represents and the new era it beckons is to see it in action, is to see the sharp turns and mind-boggling maneuvers first hand.

Even then, maybe the only way to really do the F-22 Raptor justice is to watch it race skyward, imagining Isaac Newton looking (not that far) down and questioning anything he ever said about gravity, while the Wright brothers high-five each other behind his back, as if they always knew it was possible.

Come and witness and feel the power of the aircraft as it performs  Friday through Sunday September 16-18, 2011 at the National Championship Air Races.

More Performers for 2011

The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will perform their spectacular routine on Thursday, Sept. 15 with possible arrival show on Wednesday and departure show on Friday. Stay tuned for more details.

David Martin- After earning a place on the United States Aerobatic Team in 1997, he has attended four World Aerobatic Championships winning an individual gold medal and three team bronze medals.

The Patriot Jets Team first debuted in 2003 as a two-ship team and continued to add Jets until 2006 when they became a team of fast-paced, formation flying, choreographed six-ship diamond formation aerobatic maneuvers.

One of the most diverse and unique airshow performance offerings in the industry, Jim Pietz's Aerobatic Beechcraft F33C Bonanza is flown to its limit with dazzling, low-level maneuvers and unexpected thrills.

The ShockWave Jet Truck runs at over 300 miles per hour (mph) racing airplanes and holds the world record for things like a quarter mile for trucks at 256 mph in just 6.36 seconds and full size trucks at 376 mph.

CAREER OF AVIATION ICON BOB HOOVER TO BE SALUTED DURING EAA AIRVENTURE 2011 #OSH11

Aircraft flown by Hoover to be featured during air show on Tuesday, July 26

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wis. — (Dec. 16, 2010) — Saluting his iconic aerobatic career along with heroic service in World War II, EAA AirVenture 2011 will honor Robert A. “Bob” Hoover with a special day of recognition on July 26, part of the 59th annual edition of “The World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration” on July 25-31 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.

Hoover (EAA #21285), a 1988 inductee to the National Aviation Hall of Fame, is best known for his air show performances in a Shrike Commander and P-51 Mustang and in a flying career dating back to World War II. The “Tribute to Bob Hoover” Day on Tuesday, July 26, will feature an afternoon air show with many of the legendary aircraft flown by Hoover over the years, in addition to programs chronicling his experiences and achievements.

“We are honored to pay tribute to one of the greatest aviators in history, Bob Hoover, as part of what’s building to be a very memorable AirVenture 2011,” said Tom Poberezny, EAA and AirVenture chairman. “Bob has been a fixture at our convention for decades. Everyone marvels at the aircraft and maneuvers synonymous with Bob, and will enjoy hearing about his experiences firsthand.”

Considered by many to be one of the founding fathers of modern aerobatics, Hoover enjoyed a remarkable air show and air racing career after flying 59 missions in World War II and escaping a POW camp by commandeering a German Focke-Wulf 190 in April 1945.

Upon his return to the U.S., Hoover enrolled in test pilot school, after which he flew a variety of aircraft from the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star to the Northrop N9M flying wing. He most famously worked with Chuck Yeager on the X-1 project, serving as backup pilot and was flying chase when Yeager broke the sound barrier.

Hoover, who served as the official starter at the Reno National Championship Air Races for three decades, began working for North American Aviation in 1950, where he tested and demonstrated the company’s civil and military aircraft. When the company merged with Rockwell International in 1968, he began demonstrating the strength of the Shrike Commander twin-engine business aircraft, putting it through rolls, loops, and other maneuvers usually not associated with executive aircraft.

The Shrike Commander routine was renowned for its energy management as Hoover performed aerobatics with the engines stopped. As part of the finale, he shut down both engines, then executed a loop and an eight-point hesitation slow roll as he headed back to the runway, where he touched down on one tire, then the other, during landing. Hoover later added to his legend by pouring a cup of tea without it spilling while performing a slow barrel roll, video of which has been widely distributed among aviation enthusiasts.

In 1993, Hoover had his medical certificate pulled by the FAA, beginning a three-year fight against the FAA’s emergency revocation power. EAA joined Hoover in questioning FAA’s authority without due process, leading to his reinstatement in 1995. EAA’s efforts helped result in Congress passing the Hoover Bill in 2000, giving an FAA certificate holder the right to immediately appeal an emergency certificate revocation to the National Transportation Safety Board.

AirVenture 2011 has been classified a Tier 1 event by the U.S. Navy as it celebrates the Centennial of Naval Aviation throughout next year. Several top-level attractions and events will commemorate this notable anniversary as well as 100th anniversary of air mail service. Other current days planned are “Tribute to Burt Rutan” Day on Thursday, July 28, and Navy Day on Wednesday, July 27.

Sink Your Teeth Into The Many Faces Of The USAF A-10 Warthog! from blog by Martt
Catch the Air Combat Command A-10 East Demo Team at the Indy Air Show June 12th &13th
Nose art has made a bit of a comeback in the last 20 years, and the A-10 Warthog is perfectly suited to putting a mouth on the front end to accentuate that massive 30mm GAU-8 cannon.  The simple shark teeth design like shown above is one of the most common seen on A-10's.  I think these kind of teeth looked great on the P-40 and other aircraft from WWII, but it's hard to argue with the way it's taken to the extreme here on the Warthog with the ability to spit serious firepower out of that mouth! ...

May 20-21, 2010, marked the 83rd anniversary of Charles A. Lindbergh’s historic solo, nonstop flight from New York to Paris. As a result of this feat, Lindbergh became an instant hero and celebrity. But how do we explain the overpowering public reaction to what some thought was a stunt? In his essay titled, “The Meaning of Lindbergh’s Flight,” published in 1960, historian John William Ward theorized that Lindbergh enabled Americans to look both forward to the technological future, which they feared and misunderstood, and backward to their ...

Atlantis lands for final time after 25-year career from TAKEOFF TUBE
How would you look after 120 million miles? Atlantis might appear a little scuffed up to outsiders as it heads into retirement after a quarter-century of spaceflight. But to the trained eyes of NASA engineers, the ship is still in its prime — a fact that adds to wistful emotions at the space agency as the shuttle program winds down. Atlantis returned home from its 32nd and final voyage Wednesday, the first of three shuttles that are closing out their flying careers and eventually heading to museums. “The legacy of Atlantis, now in the history books,” Mission Control announced at touchdown. About 1,200 guests lined the Kennedy Space Center runway to watch the shuttle glide through a clear morning sky to a flawless landing at the end of a 12-day journey. NASA employees wore white ribbons with the name “Atlantis” and the shuttle’s picture embossed in gold. Even the lead flight directors came in from Houston for the occasion. ...
