WORLD’S ONLY FLYING B-29 SUPERFORTRESS, FIFI, Returns to EASTERN U.S. accompanied by a B-24 and P-51

Once-In-A-Lifetime flight opportunities available.

(Addison, Tex., May 5, 2012)  The Commemorative Air Force’s famous Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber, FIFI  --  the only remaining flying example of the aircraft in the world  ---  will return to the eastern U.S. for a four week tour.

The B-29 will be joined by an equally rare B-24 Liberator, Diamond Lil, and an actual combat veteran P-51 Mustang of the Cavanaugh Flight Museum, The Brat III. The tour kicks off in mid-May and runs through mid-June.

All three aircraft are fully restored to their historic wartime configuration. The events are open to the public and will allow attendees to get up close to these famous World War II aircraft. When the aircraft are not in motion, cockpit tours of the bombers will be available. There will be opportunities for attendees to purchase a ride in one or all three aircraft at all of the stops except Andrews AFB and Hamilton, Ontario. Ride reservations are recommended. Visit www.RideB29.com for more information about the tour schedule and to make ride reservations.

The stops include:
·        May 18 – 20         Lexington, Ky. at the Aviation Museum of Kentucky (B-29 and P-51 only)
·        May 18 – 20         Andrews AFB Open House and Airshow, Washington, D.C. (B-24 only)
·        May 22 – 23         Baltimore, Md. at Martin State Airport

The mission of the Commemorative Air Force is to honor the men and women who built, maintained and flew in these airplanes during World War II. The organization believes that mission is best accomplished by maintaining the airplanes in flying condition; taking the airplanes to the people allowing them to experience the sight and sound of the aircraft in flight.

About the CAF’s B-29 Superfortress, FIFI:
The Boeing B-29 “Superfortress,” which was first flown in 1942 and began active service in 1944, is perhaps best known as the aircraft from which the first atomic bomb was dropped. It was designed as a replacement for the older B-17s and B-24s, with longer range and greater bomb loads. The B-29 was also used in the Korean War in the early 1950s and was a staple of the U.S. Air Force until the late 1950s.

FIFI was acquired by the CAF in the early 1970s when a group of CAF members found her at the U.S. Navy Proving Ground at China Lake, California where she was being used as a missile target. The airplane was rescued and restored and flew for over thirty years until 2006 when the chief pilot made the decision to ground her pending a complete power plant re-fit. What followed was an extensive four year restoration that included replacing all four engines with new custom built hybrid engines. FIFI returned to the sky in 2010 and since that time has traveled coast to coast attracting large crowds at every tour stop. Learn more about FIFI and her tour schedule at www.CAFB29B24.org

About the CAF’s B-24A Liberator:
This aircraft, built in May 1941, is the 25th B-24 produced by Consolidated Aircraft at their San Diego facility. On a training flight from Eagles Nest Airport, N.M., prior to its delivery to England, AM-927 experienced a landing accident. The damage was major enough that the aircraft had to be returned to San Diego for repairs.  As a result of the accident, she was converted to a personnel and cargo carrier.  During the war this B-24 flew scheduled runs between San Diego, Fort Worth, New York, and Washington D.C.  She also carried various American and foreign dignitaries within the U.S. In 1969 the aircraft was purchased by the CAF and, in 1971, she was painted in the colors and markings of the 98th Bomb Group, Pyramiders of the 9th Air Force in North Africa, and was named Diamond Lil.

About the Commemorative Air Force:
Collecting, restoring and flying vintage historical aircraft for more than half a century, the Commemorative Air Force ranks as one of the largest private air forces in the world. The CAF is dedicated to Honoring American Military Aviation through flight, exhibition and remembrance. A non-profit educational association, the CAF has more than 8,000 members and a fleet of 156 airplanes distributed throughout the country to 74 units located in 27 states for care and operation. For more information, visit www.commemorativeairforce.org.

About the Cavanaugh Flight Museum P-51D Mustang, The Brat III
The museum's P-51D was manufactured in 1944 and shipped to England. It was assigned to the 9th Air Force, 370th Fighter Group, 401st Fighter Squadron, and flown by Lt. Hjalmar Johnsen. In June 1947 it was sold to the Swedish Air Force and served as Flygyapnet (FV) Serial No. 26115 based at F-4, Ostersund. Between 1952 and 1953 it was sold to the Dominican Republic and served as Fuerza Aerea Dominica Serial No. 1918 until 1984 when it was retired from active service. Following the restoration that was completed in 2011, the plane was again painted in the markings of Lt. Hjalmar Johnsen.

About the Cavanaugh Flight Museum
The Cavanaugh Flight Museum opened in October 1993, the brainchild of its founder, entrepreneur Jim Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh placed his growing collection of historic aircraft in the new museum. The Cavanaugh Flight Museum is devoted to promoting aviation studies and to perpetuating America's aviation heritage; the museum fulfills its mission by restoring, operating, maintaining and displaying historically-significant, vintage aircraft, and by collecting materials related to the history of aviation. BRIG. GEN. CHUCK YEAGER TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE AT EAA AIRVENTURE 2011

World renowned pilot, WWII ace was first to fly faster than speed of sound in 1947

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wis. — (July 1, 2011) — One of aviation’s true living legends, Brig. Gen. Chuck Yeager USAF (ret.), has confirmed his plans to attend EAA AirVenture 2011. Gen. Yeager is scheduled to arrive Tuesday, July 26, and depart Sunday, July 31, with numerous special appearances throughout the rest of the week.

EAA AirVenture 2011 will be held July 25-31 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.

Gen. Yeager will give a presentation at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, at the EAA AirVenture Museum, then later that day, will be a special guest at the EAA Young Eagles Volunteer Dinner in the museum’s Eagle Hangar.

On Thursday, July 28, Gen. Yeager will attend the Gathering of Eagles gala event in the Eagle Hangar, where one of the auction items is a flight in the EAA Ford Tri-Motor with the legendary pilot. That flight will take place during the day on Friday, July 29, along with youth flights and others.

Theater in the Woods welcomes Gen. Yeager on Friday, July 29, for an informal chat scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Gen. Yeager makes his final appearance at a presentation in the EAA AirVenture Museum on Saturday, July 30, at 1 p.m.

Gen. Yeager is arguably among the world's most well-known pilots of all time. He has flown more than 341 different types of military aircraft in his long and distinguished flying career. Gen Yeager flew in four wars: World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and Pakistan for their war with India in 1971-73.

He distinguished himself in aerial combat flying P-51 Mustangs with the 357th Fighter Group over France and Germany from 1943-1945. He shot down 13 enemy aircraft – five on one mission, four on another. He also shot down an Me-262 jet and damaged several others.

The World War II ace then served a nine-year Air Force assignment as the nation’s leading test pilot and became well known throughout the world as the first person to fly an aircraft faster than the speed of sound. That occurred on October 14, 1947, when Yeager piloted the Bell X-1 "Glamorous Glennis" to a speed of Mach 1.06 (700 mph) over what is now Edwards Air Force Base in California. Yeager also is the first person to exceed Mach 2, which he did on December 12, 1953.

In 1994, Gen. Yeager was named the second chairman of EAA’s budding Young Eagles program, which had the initial goal of providing flight experiences to 1 million kids ages 8-17 by December 17, 2003 – the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers’ first powered flight. Under Yeager’s chairmanship, tens of thousands of EAA volunteer pilots flew a total of 974,006 kids to surpass the goal, including flying more than 300 himself.

“We are excited that General Chuck Yeager is going to be a part of the AirVenture Oshkosh 2011 activities,” said Tom Poberezny, EAA and AirVenture chairman. “His flying career is one filled with extraordinary achievements, and we are very pleased that he’ll share the inside story of those experiences and his own passion for flying during this year’s AirVenture celebration.”

Gen. Yeager is involved in several other charitable causes and spends time making public appearances and speeches, raising donations for his nonprofit foundation, flying, hunting, and fishing.

In 1973, Gen. Yeager was inducted into the Aviation Hall of Fame, and in 1976, he was presented with the peacetime Special Congressional Silver Medal. In 1984, President Reagan presented him with the Medal of Freedom.

He received the EAA Freedom of Flight Award in 1994, the year he succeeded Cliff Robertson as Young Eagles chairman. When he stepped down as chairman in 2004, Yeager was named EAA Young Eagles chairman emeritus.

Gen. Yeager has authored two books, "Yeager: An Autobiography" (Bantam Books, 1986 ISBN 0-553-256742) and "Press on! Further Adventures in the Good Life" (Bantam Doubleday Dell Pub, 1988 ISBN 0-553-053337).

CAF Red Tail Project Becomes the CAF Red Tail Squadron As It Soars to New Educational Heights

South St. Paul, Minn. (June 15, 2011) – The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Red Tail Project has changed its name to the CAF Red Tail Squadron. The change from Project to Squadron reflects the current status and mission of the group as an active volunteer-driven association of the Commemorative Air Force, a non-profit organization. The CAF Red Tail Squadron is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history and legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen - America's first black military pilots and their support personnel.

In existence since 1993, the CAF Red Tail Squadron uses a restored World War II P-51C Mustang fighter like those the Tuskegee Airmen flew over Europe as a tool to tell the Airmen's story at air shows across the country. In 2011, the Squadron will bring to fruition the RISE ABOVE traveling exhibit that will be housed in a 53-foot mobile exhibition and share the Airmen's inspirational story.

"Over time the CAF Red Tail Project has evolved into something larger than a 'project'- it has become a group of individuals with a shared vision to tell the story of the Tuskegee Airmen in such a way that it brings to life their struggle against adversity," said CAF President/CEO Stephan Brown. "The CAF Red Tail Squadron RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit and the P-51C Mustang will tour the country sharing the Tuskegee Airmen's achievements through overwhelming adversity to encourage and inspire today's children to Rise Above their own challenges in life."

The CAF Red Tail Squadron RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit will bring public awareness of the Tuskegee Airmen by taking their story off the airport to the young people and exposing them to an immersive educational experience. The exhibit will house a 30-seat movie theater with a 180-degree screen and travel to air shows, schools, youth gatherings and malls where visitors can sit in climate-controlled comfort to enjoy an experience documentary about the Tuskegee Airmen created by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Adam White.

"Our mission has always been focused on educating people about Tuskegee Airmen. They were talented and courageous aviators who were fighting the Nazis in the air and the military's segregationist policies on the ground during World War II,” said Bradford Lang, leader of the CAF Red Tail Squadron. “The Airmen and their crews painted the tails of their fighters red and, as they proved their skill and daring in the skies over Italy and Germany, white bomber pilots stepped back from their own prejudices and began requesting the 'red tail angels.'  Adding the word "Squadron" to our name reflects the fact that hundreds of people support our desire to tell the Airmen's story by making donations and volunteering."

The CAF Red Tail Squadron RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit is scheduled to be introduced at AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., July 25-31, 2011.

About the CAF: Collecting, restoring and flying vintage historical aircraft for more than half a century, the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) ranks as one of the largest private air forces in the world. CAREER OF AVIATION ICON BOB HOOVER TO BE SALUTED DURING EAA AIRVENTURE 2011 #OSH11

Aircraft flown by Hoover to be featured during air show on Tuesday, July 26

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wis. — (Dec. 16, 2010) — Saluting his iconic aerobatic career along with heroic service in World War II, EAA AirVenture 2011 will honor Robert A. “Bob” Hoover with a special day of recognition on July 26, part of the 59th annual edition of “The World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration” on July 25-31 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.

Hoover (EAA #21285), a 1988 inductee to the National Aviation Hall of Fame, is best known for his air show performances in a Shrike Commander and P-51 Mustang and in a flying career dating back to World War II. The “Tribute to Bob Hoover” Day on Tuesday, July 26, will feature an afternoon air show with many of the legendary aircraft flown by Hoover over the years, in addition to programs chronicling his experiences and achievements.

“We are honored to pay tribute to one of the greatest aviators in history, Bob Hoover, as part of what’s building to be a very memorable AirVenture 2011,” said Tom Poberezny, EAA and AirVenture chairman. “Bob has been a fixture at our convention for decades. Everyone marvels at the aircraft and maneuvers synonymous with Bob, and will enjoy hearing about his experiences firsthand.”

Considered by many to be one of the founding fathers of modern aerobatics, Hoover enjoyed a remarkable air show and air racing career after flying 59 missions in World War II and escaping a POW camp by commandeering a German Focke-Wulf 190 in April 1945.

Upon his return to the U.S., Hoover enrolled in test pilot school, after which he flew a variety of aircraft from the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star to the Northrop N9M flying wing. He most famously worked with Chuck Yeager on the X-1 project, serving as backup pilot and was flying chase when Yeager broke the sound barrier.

Hoover, who served as the official starter at the Reno National Championship Air Races for three decades, began working for North American Aviation in 1950, where he tested and demonstrated the company’s civil and military aircraft. When the company merged with Rockwell International in 1968, he began demonstrating the strength of the Shrike Commander twin-engine business aircraft, putting it through rolls, loops, and other maneuvers usually not associated with executive aircraft.

The Shrike Commander routine was renowned for its energy management as Hoover performed aerobatics with the engines stopped. As part of the finale, he shut down both engines, then executed a loop and an eight-point hesitation slow roll as he headed back to the runway, where he touched down on one tire, then the other, during landing. Hoover later added to his legend by pouring a cup of tea without it spilling while performing a slow barrel roll, video of which has been widely distributed among aviation enthusiasts.

In 1993, Hoover had his medical certificate pulled by the FAA, beginning a three-year fight against the FAA’s emergency revocation power. EAA joined Hoover in questioning FAA’s authority without due process, leading to his reinstatement in 1995. EAA’s efforts helped result in Congress passing the Hoover Bill in 2000, giving an FAA certificate holder the right to immediately appeal an emergency certificate revocation to the National Transportation Safety Board.

AirVenture 2011 has been classified a Tier 1 event by the U.S. Navy as it celebrates the Centennial of Naval Aviation throughout next year. Several top-level attractions and events will commemorate this notable anniversary as well as 100th anniversary of air mail service. Other current days planned are “Tribute to Burt Rutan” Day on Thursday, July 28, and Navy Day on Wednesday, July 27.
