Atlanta Warbird Weekend coming to Dekalb-Peachtree Airport

Commemorative Air Force leads aviation celebration, WWII veteran tribute

PEACHTREE CITY, GA (September 7, 2014) – Chamblee, Georgia’s Dekalb-Peachtreee Airport (KPDK) will be transformed into a World War II airfield September 27-28, 2014 when a squadron of vintage military aircraft from across the United States descend on the former Navy training base to celebrate the inaugural Atlanta Warbird Weekend.

The first ever Atlanta Warbird Weekend is a community effort inspired and lead by the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Dixie Wing, the Georgia Chapter of the largest WWII flying museum in the United States.  Originally conceived as a showcase for the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress “Sentimental Journey” from CAF Airbase Arizona, the lineup has grown to include over 15 WWII-era aircraft, military vehicles, reenactors in period uniforms, educational activities and opportunities to meet World War II veterans.   Over twenty organizations are collaborating to create the event.

The mission of the Texas-based Commemorative Air Force is to honor veterans and American Military Aviation through flight, exhibition and remembrance.

In addition to the classic B-17 Flying Fortress, examples of three of WWII’s most iconic fighters will fly into Dekalb-Peachtree Aiport.  A Supermarine Spitfire, made famous during the Battle of Britain, will be joined by a trio of North American P-51 Mustangs and a Goodyear FG-1 Corsair.  The Mustangs were nicknamed “Little Friends” by United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) bomber crews, while the Corsair is often associated with the United States Marine Corps’ VMF-214 Black Sheep Squadron and Medal of Honor recipient Maj. Greg Boyington.

The CAF Dixie Wing’s rare Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber and WWII-era trainers will also be on display during the weekend.

“The response from the local community has been amazing” said Jay Bess, the CAF Dixie Wing Marketing Officer and Atlanta Warbird Weekend Co-Chairman, “We have had aviation and veterans groups, museums and individuals volunteer to help us share the story of World War II aviation history.”

Rides can be purchased in the B-17 Flying Fortress “Sentimental Journey”, P-51 Mustang “Red Nose” and other CAF Dixie Wing aircraft, with prices starting at $99.  Proceeds from the rides and aircraft tours are used to offset costs in maintaining and flying the aircraft.

The weekend will provide bragging rights for aviation and history enthusiasts, but more importantly the public will have an opportunity to learn about the men and women who flew the aircraft during the Second World War, arguably the defining event of the twentieth century.

Educational activities include “Warbirds in Review”, a “WWII Veterans Meet & Greet” and a recreated USAAF 8th Air Force Mission Briefing delivered by reeanctors wearing authentic World War II uniforms and equipment.  “Warbirds in Review” is a series of flight line presentations delivered by pilots and experts who describe the service history of the Spitfire, Corsair, Mustang and Japanese Zero.  Actors will provide music from the 1940s during the weekend.
Daytime activities are free to the public.

The highlight of the weekend is “Dinner With Eagles: Airmen of the Mighty Eighth”.   Beginning Saturday night at 7pm five veterans of the USAAF Eighth Air Force will describe their experiences during the aerial bombing campaign over Nazi occupied Europe.  Noted WWII aviation historian and author Bruce Gamble will lead a panel discussion comprising P-51 pilot Robert “Punchy” Powell, B-24 Liberator navigator Farish “Hap” Chandler and B-17 Flying Fortress crewman Henry Hughey, Albert MacMahan and Jonathan Swift.

The program will be held at the WWII aerodrome-themed 57th Fighter Group Restaurant located at Dekalb-Peachtree Airport.  Tickets for the event can be purchased online.

Participating organizations include the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Airbase Arizona, Eighth Air Force Historical Society, Georgia Chapter, Airmen Preservation Society Southern Wing, Florida Fly Boys, Kelly’s Zeroes, Tuskegee Airmen International, Atlanta Chapter, Georgia Military Vehicle Preservation Association, Civil Air Patrol, Atlanta History Center and Witness to War veterans oral history program.

Atlanta Warbird Weekend Co-Chairman Moreno Aguiari explained how the all volunteer CAF Dixie Wing created a dynamic new event from the ground-up:

“Dedicated volunteers are the engine for the Atlanta Warbird Weekend, but we have been extremely fortunate to receive logistical, financial and promotional support from Dekalb-Peachtree Airport, Atlantic Aviation, Epps Aviation, Aviation Institute of Maintenance, Honda Carland, the Chamblee Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Center of Innovation for Aerospace.”

Atlanta Warbird Weekend will be held Sept. 27th-28th, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.  For a complete schedule of activities, flight prices and reservations or to purchase tickets to “Dinner With Eagles”, visit www.atlantawarbirdweekend.com

Commemorative Air Force Announces World War II Air Expo at Dallas Executive Airport

(Dallas, August 18, 2014) The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) is bringing “hands on” history to Dallas this October 3 through 5 when the world’s only flying B-29 Superfortress, FIFI, the famous P-51C Tuskegee Airmen and over a dozen other World War II military aircraft take center stage at their first event at Dallas Executive Airport.

The event will be open to the public Friday, October 3 through Sunday, October 5 bringing the sights, smells and sounds of World War II aviation history to south Dallas. Attractions will include the CAF’s Rise Above traveling educational exhibit – a 160 degree panoramic theater in which visitors watch a video highlighting the courage and determination of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. Participants will also tour the bomber cockpits, watch the airplanes fly and can even purchase rides in many of the visiting aircraft. These aircraft are powerful history lessons for young and old alike. The visual display combined with the enthusiasm and knowledge of CAF members will create an unforgettable experience for visitors.

Attending aircraft will include the B-29 Superfortress, P51C Mustang, P51D Mustang, SB2C Helldiver,    B-24 Liberator, A-26 Invader and many other transport, liaison and trainer airplanes. The event address is 5303 Challenger Drive in Dallas. Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for children age 6 through 17. Children age 5 and under are free. The cost for aircraft rides ranges from $65 to $1,995 depending on the airplane. Reservations may be made online at www.AirPowerExpo.org.

The Air Expo kicks off Thursday, October 2, with a full day of educational programs for local students. Activities that day include the CAF Rise Above traveling educational exhibit which teaches students the story of men who overcame many obstacles to train and fight as U.S. Army Air Corps pilots during World War II and emphasizes what their spirit and hard work still mean to us 60 years later. Former Tuskegee Airmen and other World War II Veterans will be on hand to talk with the students about all of the airplanes and their experiences during the war.

In June of this year the Commemorative Air Force announced Dallas Executive Airport will be the new location for their national headquarters. They plan to build a world-class aviation attraction at the airport. The World War II Air Expo, hosted by the CAF B-29/B-24 Squadron, offers Dallas residents their first opportunity to learn more about the organization.

About the Commemorative Air Force
The Commemorative Air Force honors the men and women who built, maintained and flew in these airplanes during World War II. The organization believes that is best accomplished by maintaining the airplanes in flying condition; often taking the airplanes to the people allowing them to experience the sight and sound of the aircraft in flight.

Collecting, restoring and flying vintage historical aircraft for more than half a century, the Commemorative Air Force ranks as one of the largest private air forces in the world. The CAF is dedicated to Honoring American Military Aviation through flight, exhibition and remembrance. A non-profit educational association, the CAF has more than 11,000 members and a fleet of over 160 airplanes distributed throughout the country to units located in 24 states for care and operation. AZ B-17 Flying Fortress coming to the Peach State

Tour Stop will headline Atlanta Warbird Weekend, connecting history, generations
PEACHTREE CITY, GA (July 6, 2014) - One of the last flying B-17 Flying Fortress bombers, “Sentimental Journey,” will lead a flight of vintage World War II aircraft to Peachtree Dekalb-Airport (KPDK),and inaugurate the Atlanta Warbird Weekend, September 27-28, 2014.  Cockpit tours and flights will be available in the B-17 and other aircraft, including a P-51 Mustang and rare SBD Dauntless dive bomber.

When first flown in 1934, the four-engine B-17 was one of the most advanced designs in the world.  During World War II, the aircraft was the primary bomber used by the United States Army Air Forces on long range missions against Nazi Germany.  Of the 12,731 B-17s originally built, 4,750 were lost in combat.  Only fifty airframes are known to exist around the world and less than a dozen are capable of flight.

The Atlanta Warbird Weekend is a first-time project between two chapters of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF), Airbase Arizona located in Mesa, AZ and the Peachtree City, GA based Dixie Wing. Established in Texas in 1957 as a 501c3 education non-profit, the CAF is the oldest and largest World War II flying museum in the United States, dedicated to restoring and preserving in flying condition examples of aircraft flown by the United States during the Second World War.

“Atlanta is home to the busiest airport in the world” said Jay Bess, the CAF Dixie Wing Marketing Officer “and Georgia is a state that has thrived on aviation commerce for nearly 100 years.  Our vision is to create an annual event that celebrates an important era of America’s aviation history.”

Aviation is a vital element of Georgia’s economy.  A study published in 2011 by the Georgia Department of Transportation estimated total economic impact of Georgia’s 104 publicly-owned, public-use airports at $62 billion annually.

As public fascination in World War II aircraft continues to grow, aviation-minded communities across the country are hosting aircraft tour stops as an alternative to more complex and expensive air shows.

Bess explained the purpose of Atlanta Warbird Weekend: “Our goals are to teach World War II history, increase awareness of the Commemorative Air Force in Atlanta and raise much needed funds for the restoration, maintenance and operation of these aircraft.  Seeing these planes in the air brings history alive in a way a museum, textbook or video never will.”

Veterans groups and education displays will also be on hand.

Peachtree-Dekalb Airport was used as a Naval Air Station during World War II, training thousands of Navy and Marine pilots.  Today, the airport handles 200,000 aircraft operations each year and is known for hosting community events promoting aviation.

Joining the Flying Fortress will be a North America P-51 Mustang, considered by most historians to be the best all-round fighter and premier bomber escort of the Second World War.  The B-17 and P-51 are often remembered as stable mates, with bomber crews nicknaming the protecting fighters “Little Friends”.  Fighter pilots in turn referred to the bombers as “Big Friends”.  A ride in a Flying Fortress or Mustang is a life long dream for many aviation and history enthusiasts.

Organizers will also host “Big Friends, Little Friends” Dinner & Symposium at the 1940s-themed 57th Fighter Group Restaurant Saturday evening.  Noted author and historian, Bruce Gamble will give a B-17 presentation and moderate a bomber and fighter pilot panel discussion.

Sentimental Journey has been continuously flown since it was manufactured in 1944, performing missions from military reconnaissance to drone “mother ship” during nuclear testing, as well as firefighting, before being retired after three decades of service.

In 1978, the aircraft was donated to the then-named Arizona Wing based in Mesa, Arizona.  Volunteers have meticulously restored the Flying Fortress to full military specifications, painting the B-17 in the markings of the 457th Bomb Group as a tribute to all aircrew who served during WWII.  The aircraft also features artwork recreating a classic Betty Grable pin-up photo well known to GIs, sailors and Marines of The Greatest Generation.  A local media contest produced the name Sentimental Journey from over 800 entries.

Sentimental Journey has been touring North America since the early 1980s and makes 60 stops annually.  2014 will mark the first return of the B-17 to Georgia since 1999.

An unforgettable flight inside Sentimental Journey and other aircraft start at $425 per person.   For flight reservations, register online at www.atlantawarbirdweekend.com.  Cockpit tours are only $5; ground viewing and photo opportunities are free to the visiting public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, Sept 27th-28th.

Historic WWII Warbirds Visit Cincinnati, Offer Rides and Preserve History

PEACHTREE CITY, GA (June 11, 2014) -  Cincinnati Municipal Lunken Airport will turn back the calendar to 1944 when Cincinnati Warbirds Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Warbird Squadron 18 hosts a pair of vintage World War II aircraft operated by the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Dixie Wing, Friday June 20-Sunday, June 22, 2014.  The aircraft will be on display 9am-6pm each day.

The CAF Dixie Wing flight will consist of an iconic North American P-51 Mustang, as well as a rare Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber.  Many historians and military aviators consider the P-51 Mustang to be the finest all around fighter of the Second World War, while the SBD Dauntless dive-bomber is revered by Navy and Marine aviators as the Hero of the Battle of Midway.  The Mustang is frequently remembered as a long range escort used in bombing missions over Nazi Germany, however the type was later used during the Korean War as a fighter-bomber and could be found in air forces around the world until the 1960s.

The CAF Dixie Wing “Lady in Blue” is one of only two SBDs in the world currently flying.

The all volunteer CAF Dixie Wing is the Georgia chapter of the Commemorative Air Force, a national non-profit founded in 1957 to acquire, restore and preserve in flying condition a complete collection of combat aircraft that were flown by all military services of the United States during World War II.  With 150 operational aircraft, the CAF is the largest WWII flying museum in the United States.

Cincinnati area warbirds will also be on display, including a North American T-6 Texan, a trainer familiar to aspiring military pilots of the World War II and post-war eras.  Texans prepared students for front line duty in fighters, bombers and transports.

“We are excited to join forces with Cincinnati Warbirds so that we can share and promote America’s military aviation heritage with the community”, said Jim Buckley, the group’s leader “Lunken Airport is a perfect fit for us.”

Lunken Airport traces its roots to the 1920’s and The Golden Age of Aviation.  The airport was visited on several occasions by aviation legends Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, Roscoe Turner, and Jimmy Doolittle, who later lead the Doolittle Raid of World War II fame. Lunken Airport was also used by the United States Army Air Forces and U.S. Navy as a site for air traffic control training during the Second World War.

“We are stewards of American history” continued Buckley, “but we believe the best way to preserve our aviation heritage is to share a flight experience in these historic aircraft.”

Rides will be available for purchase in all three aircraft, with proceeds going to cover the cost of maintaining and flying the group’s fleet of WWII aircraft.   Rides are extremely popular with veterans who remember when the vintage aircraft filled the skies, as well as enthusiasts of all ages who want to follow in the footsteps of America’s military aviators.

Rides can be purchased in advance or during the weekend.  Ground tours of these rare aircraft will be available for a modest admission fee.  To purchase a ride online, visit http://www.dixiewing.org/365_Cincinnati_Warbirds.htm.

Cincinnati Warbirds announces... WARBIRD WEEKEND featuring the Commemorative Air Force Dixie Wing

http://www.cincinnatiwarbirds.org/caf.html
JUNE 20-22   9:00 AM – 6:00PM  daily

Lunken Airport - 262 Wilmer Ave

To commemorate the 70 anniversary of D-Day, the Dixie Wing and the Cincinnati Warbirds will display several historic military aircraft, featuring the P-51 Mustang, the pre-eminent fighter in the European theatre.  .

In 1941, after being designed and produced in only 4 months by North American Aviation for the war effort, the P-51 Mustang’s extraordinary speed, range, and high altitude performance made it one of the Allies most valuable assets to establish air superiority, escort bombers deep into enemy territory, and support the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944.

This will be a rare opportunity for the public to view, ride in, and perhaps fly, this rare iconic historic military aircraft.  Visit http://www.dixiewing.org/rides.htm to reserve a ride.

To complete the display and flying opportunities, one of only two flying SBD Dauntless Aircraft and a T-6 Texan will also be available for rides.  The B-25 Axis Nightmare from the Tri-State Warbird Museum, as well as other military aircraft will be on static display.

On Saturday, Harley Bike Riders, with the Ohio All American HOG Rally will be stopping by, as Lunken Airport becomes one of the stops on their tour.

April 29, 2014  (Dallas, Texas)- The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) has today announced its selection of Dallas Executive Airport as the location for their CAF National Airbase and corporate Headquarters.

“After an intensive one-year nationwide search, which began with 23 cities and narrowed to six then three finalists, we are proud to announce that the CAF Board of Directors has selected Dallas Executive Airport as the location to build our National Airbase” said Stephan C. Brown, President and CEO.

According to Neils Agather, CAF Chairman of the Board, “From the start, the CAF Board of Directors laid out disciplined criteria for the location, such as having an airport large enough to operate our aircraft and airshow, being part of a large metropolitan area, having interstate access, and so on.  We unanimously found Dallas Executive to be the best fit with our needs.”

The CAF will move a few initial staff in 2014, with the full operations of its Headquarters arriving in Dallas by the end of 2015.  “We also have the goal of constructing a world-class aviation visitor attraction, unlike any other in the United States,” said Brown.  “It will educate and entertain young and old alike using the very best of modern display techniques, including interactive displays, 4D movie experiences and hyper-realistic flight simulators.   We will also be using the most interactive assets we have - the largest fleet of flying vintage military aircraft in the world.  And to that end, we are announcing our plans to raise the funds necessary to build this facility, initially estimated at $40 million.”

“This will be a major tourism and educational asset for the City of Dallas” said Adam Smith, CAF Executive Vice President and National Airbase Project Leader. “We have a unique opportunity at this location to inspire hundreds of thousands of children and adults with some incredible airplanes and also to share the important stories the aircraft carry, of human endeavor and sacrifice in the name of freedom."

“I can see yellow school busses dropping our children off to learn history through the sights, sounds and smells of real aircraft, not just a computer screen," Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins echoed. "Seeing these aircraft fly makes history real.  I am especially excited about the CAF’s 'Rise Above' initiative which uses a Red Tail P-51 Mustang and the lessons of the Tuskegee Airmen to show our youth that if these brave men could 'rise above' their circumstances of discrimination to fight for their country, then they too can rise above their own circumstances to succeed.”

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings led the pursuit of the CAF and his team worked closely with the CAF and its consultant Jones Lange LaSalle over the past year to agree to terms and find the right location on the airport.

"I told the CAF folks from the start that Dallas was the only clear choice for their National Airbase. I am excited they agreed and look forward to their role in helping our city grow south," Mayor Rawlings said. "The CAF will be a welcome addition to the museum and educational community here in Dallas, and it will provide cultural and recreational activities for residents and visitors alike."

Along with the planned year-round public attraction, the CAF plans to hold up to three major events per year; including an annual World War II airshow.  CAF’s 164 aircraft nationwide perform in over three hundred air shows per year, nine of which the organization produces itself.

“Our goal is to make the Dallas airshow the preeminent ‘Warbird’ airshow in the nation,” said Brown. “We plan to bring in aircraft and re-enactors from all over the country so the community can enjoy a family event unlike any other.”

CAF’s National Airbase will become the permanent home to the world’s only flying B-29 Superfortess FIFI and the B-24 Liberator Diamond Lil one of only two left flying.  Other exciting fighters, cargo and transport aircraft will also make Dallas Executive their home.  On display at the press conference were the B-29, B-24, P-51C Tuskegee Airmen, B-17 Texas Raiders, A-26 Invader, C-45 Bucket of Bolts, R4D Ready for Duty, P-40 as well as several other World War II warbirds.

The CAF reached initial terms with the City’s Economic Development and Aviation Departments in early April and the City Council’s consideration of a proposed lease and associated financial arrangements will take place in the near future.

In 1957, a small group of ex-service pilots pooled their money to purchase a P-51 Mustang, beginning what is now called the Commemorative Air Force (CAF). With the addition of a pair of F8F Bearcats, the CAF became the founders of the Warbird Movement, an effort to preserve and honor our military aviation history with the rallying cry “Keep ‘Em Flying!”  Now, nearly 60 years later, the CAF operates 164 flyable vintage aircraft for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations.  A non-profit educational association, the CAF has more than 10,000 members and its fleet of historic aircraft is distributed among 83 units located in 25 states for care and operation.  For more information, visit www.commemorativeairforce.org or call (432) 563-1000.

Aviation Photography Workshops

3G Aviation Media has begun a series of workshops to teach the skills necessary to pull off a successful sunset or sunrise static aviation photo shoot. The teams mission of these workshops is: To provide attendees an opportunity to learn, plan, execute and develop as photographers in a small-group environment while working with first-rate aviation subjects.
More simply, the 3G team boils this down to four words:
  • Learn – Plan – Execute – Develop.
  • Learn the skills required for your photoshoot.
  • Plan the details of the shoot so that as little as possible is left to chance
  • Execute the photoshoot, staying flexible and adaptive
  • Develop as a photographer, learning from your experiences, both the good and the bad.
The 3G Team had started planning a series of aviation workshops for early 2014, but in April of this year, 3G Aviation Media made a connection with the CAF Dixie Wing through the International Society for Aviation Photography (ISAP).   During an ISAP lunch at SUN n FUN, the 3G team first met with Moreno Mo" Aguiari,  The Dixie Wing’s Marketing Coordinator, who had recently joined ISAP and  was looking for photographers to partner with the CAF.  After several discussions over the course of a few months, it was decided to accelerate the workshop timeline and host the first event at the CAF Dixie Wing facility at Falcon field in Peachtree City, Georgia.
This November we will be hosting this fantastic learning event at the Commemorative Air Force: Dixie Wing, located in Peachtree City, GA with (4) classic WWII aircraft along with models and reenactors.  The agenda is full of practical hands on shooting, classroom learning session can be found on our website 3G Aviation Media.

About 3g Aviation Media
3G Aviation Media is a joint venture between a group of aviation photographers who wanted to partner for specific projects while still retaining their own brand and artistic identity. The three “G”s of the team are: Tony Granata, Matt Genuardi and Doug Glover. Each of them has a different shooting style and each also brings a unique set of skills to the table. As an instructor, Tony Granata brings his expertise in post-processing of an image, and has a wealth of experience shooting from helicopters. Having spent quite a few years as a photography manager for a major entertainment company, Matt Genuardi specializes in working with models and professional lighting equipment. The itinerant nature of his previous life in the US Marine Corps has made Doug Glover the expert in “packing for the location,” and as a Forward Air Controller instructor (ground and airborne) he is the team’s flight briefer and pilot liaison.

About the Commemorative Air Force Dixie Wing
The Commemorative Air Force was founded to acquire, restore and preserve in flying condition a complete collection of combat aircraft which were flown by all military services of the United States, and selected aircraft of other nations, for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations of Americans. The Dixie Wing was approved as the 83rd CAF unit on February 28, 1987, and has since displayed its collection of vintage World War II aircraft in numerous air shows throughout the Southeast. The wing is a non-profit, tax-exempt "flying museum" that depends on contributions of time and funds to carry out its mission.

In addition, the Red Tail P-51C Mustang will be on static display.

During the original movie aptly named, "RISE ABOVE," audience members will be transported into what it was like to be a black airman during WWII and the obstacles faced by America’s first black military pilots and their support personnel, known today as the Tuskegee Airmen, as they worked toward their goal of becoming U.S. Army Air Corps pilots in the early 1940s. At the conclusion of the film, audiences experience the excitement and thrill of flying the world’s greatest fighter aircraft, the P-51 Mustang, in formation, aerobatics, a break and a few low passes. Filmed with a 180-degree lens along with the state-of-the-art theater design, the movie experience gives attendees the feeling that you are actually flying in the airplane.

“The exhibit is truly a one-of-a-kind adventure similar to something you would experience at Disneyland,” said Brad Lang, CAF Red Tail Squadron Leader. “The overall message is about rising above to reach your potential no matter your circumstances; the film uses the story of the Tuskegee Airmen and the story of the CAF Red Tail Squadron to inspire young people to achieve their potential, but the message resonates with all ages because of the unique and interactive way it is told. This is an experience you won’t want to miss.”

The exhibit is a mobile ‘big’ screen theater with a customized 53' trailer with expandable sides that houses a 160-degree panoramic curved movie screen and seating for 35 in climate-controlled comfort. It showcases a short original movie, "RISE ABOVE," focusing on what the Tuskegee Airmen had to overcome to be allowed to fly and fight for their country during World War II.
