The Invitational is held in conjunction with the National Championship Air Races and 2014 promises to be another tremendous year for the vintage aircraft competition.

“We are gearing up for another outstanding event,” said Ken Perich, Executive Director of the National Aviation Heritage Invitational. “We are thrilled to be working closely with the Pathways to Aviation Foundation and to playing a significant role in the National Championship Air Races non-racing events.”

Thousands of hours of labor and dedication to the smallest details by the aircraft owners and restorers come to fruition at the Invitational. The fully restored aircraft are a wonderful sight to behold. The Invitational has been called the nation’s premiere traveling aviation museum. Admission to view the Invitational is open to anyone attending the Reno Air Races.  Throughout race week spectators can take a walk through aviation history as they view a wide array of beautifully restored airplanes –living testaments to our rich aviation history.

The National Aviation Heritage Invitational competition encourages the preservation and restoration of historic aircraft to airworthy condition and to the very highest standards of workmanship and historical accuracy.

Participants compete in four categories:

~Antique – includes all eligible civil aircraft flying in 1945 and earlier.  The winning aircraft will be awarded the Orville and Wilber Wright trophy;

National Aviation Hall of Fame Enshrinees gather at Reno Sunday to honor the late Neil A. Armstrong

The NEIL A. ARMSTRONG AVIATION HERITAGE TROPHY named in his honor
(September 12, 2012 – Dayton, OH)  The National Aviation Hall of Fame confirmed that seven former Enshrinees will be at Reno to assist in renaming the National Aviation Heritage Invitational (NAHI) Trophy in honor of the late Neil Armstrong, who passed away on August 25th at age 82.  Helping NAHI partners formally unveil the Neil A. Armstrong Aviation Heritage Trophy this Sunday will be WWII ace Bud Anderson; legendary test pilot, Bob Hoover; Southwest Airlines founder and former CEO, Herb Kelleher; business aviation icon, Clay Lacy;  record-setter Dick Rutan; and aerobatic champions and air show performers, Sean Tucker and Patty Wagstaff.   Armstrong, a former Navy fighter pilot, test-pilot, engineer and the first man to walk on the moon, was enshrined in the NAHF in 1979.

“Going way back to the Heritage Invitational’s founding some fourteen years ago, Neil often returned to Reno to assist his fellow Hall of Fame Enshrinees in personally handing the winning aircraft owners’ their awards, “ said Ron Kaplan, NAHF Enshrinement Director and Deputy Director of NAHI.  “We’re gratified to unveil this prestigious and very appropriately renamed trophy in honor of such a hero of flight, at an aviation event Neil loved to be a part of.  It’s certainly bittersweet, but I know he will be with us in spirit.”

In 1998, the National Aviation Hall of Fame partnered with Rolls-Royce North America, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the Reno Air Racing Foundation and many aviation related organizations to establish and support the National Aviation Heritage Invitational, which was created to foster the preservation of our rich aviation history by encouraging the restoration of vintage aircraft to airworthy condition. NAHI has held annual vintage aircraft competitions in both Dayton, Ohio and Reno, Nevada since 1999. The Invitational competition in Reno is held concurrently with the National Championship Air Races each September.

At each NAHI competition up until now, the Grand Champion, the aircraft judged to be the most authentic example of a vintage aircraft restored to airworthy condition, has been awarded The Rolls-Royce Aviation Heritage Trophy, which resides throughout the year in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center outside of Washington, DC.   Upon its unveiling by the NAHF Enshrinees this Sunday, the award will henceforth be known as the Neil A. Armstrong Aviation Heritage Trophy.  The owner of the winning aircraft is presented with a “keeper” trophy by members of the NAHI staff and Enshrinees of the National Aviation Hall of Fame.  Sponsoring the trophy this year is Gilbert, Arizona-based Perform Air International.

Nearly thirty vintage aircraft are registered for this year’s Invitational, competing also for trophies presented to aircraft judged to be best in their class or particular era.  Additionally, spectators at the event are encouraged to cast a vote for their favorite, the winner presented with the National Aviation Hall of Fame “People’s Choice” Award.

RARE RESTORED VINTAGE AIRCRAFT to compete for The NEIL A. ARMSTRONG AVIATION HERITAGE TROPHY

Stead Airport, Reno, NV. -  Now in its 14th year, the National Aviation Heritage Invitational gives vintage aircraft owners and restorers the opportunity to bring their brilliantly restored aircraft to the high desert of northern Nevada to participate in the National Aviation Heritage Invitational competition held concurrent with the National Championship Air Races and Air Show in Reno on September 12-16, 2012.

Ken Perich, Executive Director, National Aviation Heritage Invitational, stated: “on behalf of the NAHI Sponsors, Supporters, Judging staff and Volunteers, we are extremely proud to announce that The Neil A. Armstrong Aviation Heritage Trophy will be unveiled and presented to the Grand Champion of our 14th Annual National Aviation Heritage Invitational competition during the 2012 presentation ceremony which will be held on Sunday, September 16th at 10:30 AM.

This year over 30 skillfully restored aircraft are vying for the prestigious Neil A. Armstrong Aviation Heritage Trophy.  “The ramp will be full of beautiful restorations and we are thrilled this year to welcome Perform Air as our new Presenting Sponsor,” said Charlie Marks, Director of Operations.

Established in 1998, the event has been called the nation’s premiere traveling aviation museum. Admission to view the Invitational is open to anyone attending the Reno Air Races.  Throughout race week spectators can take a walk through aviation history as they view a wide array of beautifully restored airplanes including a 1929 Fleet, a 1930 Stearman Speedmail,  a 1941 Vultee, a 1929 Ford Tri-Motor, a 1946 Piper J3C  and a 1951 Grumman Albatross along with many other living testaments to our rich aviation history.

The Invitational competition encourages the preservation and restoration of historic aircraft to airworthy condition and to the very highest standards of workmanship and historical accuracy. Participants compete in four categories with aircraft that are 45 years and older -Antique (early aircraft pre-1945), Large Aircraft, Classic (post 1946) and Military and are judged by a five-member panel including a representative from the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

Each aircraft is judged on its technical merit and how well it represents the aircraft early in its career.  Authenticity to the original manufacturer's condition is the "gold standard" for each plane.

When not on display at the Invitational, the striking six-foot tall Neil A. Armstrong Aviation Heritage Trophy resides at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles International Airport. The winning aircraft owner’s name and the name of the restoration facility is engraved on a plaque placed on the trophy. The overall winner and each of the Class winners are presented with a keeper trophy.

The National Aviation Hall of Fame’s ‘People’s Choice Award” trophy is awarded to the owner of the aircraft which receives the most votes from the public reviewing the aircraft during the Invitational. Voting begins on Thursday morning, September 13th and ends September 15th at 5:00 p.m.

The awards ceremony will take place Sunday morning, September 16 where aviation legends including Patty Wagstaff, Herb Kelleher, Dick Rutan, Clarence ‘Bud’ Anderson, Clay Lacy, Bob Hoover and Sean D. Tucker will be assisting in the presentation of the awards. Past presenters include Neil Armstrong, Paul Tibbets and Jim Lovell.

Presenting sponsor Perform Air is joined by the National Aviation Hall of Fame and the Reno Air Racing Foundation in their dedication to the preservation of aviation history.  The Invitational is grateful for the continuing support from: Air Transport World Magazine, Reno Air Racing Association, Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Air and Space Smithsonian Magazine, Airmail Greetings, Speed News, The Perich Group and Live AirShow TV.

National Aviation Heritage Invitational Preview

PFLUGERVILLE, TX – SEPTEMBER 6, 2012 – We are just days away from the 49th Reno National Championship Air Races.  While part of the ramp features the fastest planes that will challenge the race course, on the east end of the ramp, some of the oldest and slowest aircraft will be on display at the National Aviation Heritage Invitational.

Aircraft are judged on their authenticity and how close each restoration comes to the day it left the factory.  Five judges, two from the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum, examine each plane inside and out down to the smallest detail.  “When I started covering the Invitational was amazed at how specific the judges get”, said Jeff Lee, President of LiveAirShowTV.  “That’s what makes these restorations get better and better each year.  They are wonderful examples of where aviation has come from.”

Winners are announced in Warbird, Classic, Antique, and Large Aircraft, as well as the People’s Choice Award presented by the National Aviation Hall of Fame.  The overall best restoration receives the Neil A. Armstrong Aviation Trophy during a ceremony on Sunday morning of race week.
