Here's a recap from yesterday, provided by LiveAirShowTV.   (Email readers - fyi. this is embedded video).  To quote LASTV - "An update on the start of racing at Reno. Who's in....Who's out....Who's the one to beat".

Marilyn Dash kindly forwarded some pictures to us early this morning (we were already on our way to Stead airport when they were received, so sorry they are late being posted). These were from the fence on Wednesday.

2009 Season Review by Flightline UK 2009 has been Flightline UK's biggest season to date with not only UK shows but visits to events in the United Arab Emirates, The Netherlands and Sweden. 2009 ASB Person of the Year - ASB.TV Community from http://www.asb.tv/ Before he could even write, a cherub faced Steven Hinton kept people riveted as the four year old gave authoritative tours of the Planes of Fame museum in Chino, California. As the son of museum president Steve Hinton, who is a legendary warbird and race pilot, one might expect such precociousness from the younger Hinton. However, his aviation pedigree only granted him access to remarkable planes and people, but it was his own determination and tremendous work ethic that landed him in the Reno gold circle. As a twelve year old his bedroom became an air racing shrine according to his mother, Karen Hinton, who anticipated he would follow the family's penchant for racing. So it wasn't a surprise when Steven started working his way through airplanes soloing in a Cessna 150 at sixteen and moving through a stearman, L-5, T-6 and ultimately soloing in a P-51 Mustang at nineteen…

As soon as aircraft came anywhere near this barrier, they became increasingly difficult to control. Reno Wrap up: The torch has been passed on!

Coverage of the the conclusion from the Reno Air Races is below.

Watching video of the Reno Races doesn't capture the energy you can pull while on the ramp or in the grandstands. Everywhere you turn there is a story to share. The hottest question on the ramp Sunday morning was: "who?". Who do you think will win it? Rare Bear fans were hoping John Penney could pull off another win in the newly painted Rare Bear (and she looked stunning!). But the real conversation revolved around Will Whiteside, a Cinderalla story waiting to be told; or Steve Hinton, Jr., the 22 year old racer who debuted last year in "Sparky", the Jelly Belly sponsored P-51, last year. Steve grew up in the shadows of the Planes of Fame hangars while his dad, Steve Hinton (Glacier Girl is just one of the planes we've seen him recently), restored vintage aircraft. Last year we saw him turning wrenches in the Strega pit - this year he was wearing the Strega flight suit. We just about talked the story to death when the race line up was introduced for the final of finals: The Unlimited Class. While dad flew cover overhead in the T-33 safety plane, Steve maneuvered around the course and when it was all said and done - the torch had been passed on to the new generation of air racer - Steve Hinton, Jr. At 22 years of age, the youngest champion to grace the air racing pylons.

Mark Allen from Live Air Show Tv interviews Steve Hinton after the big win!

Hinton flew the highly-modified P-51 Strega to victory in the Breitling Gold Unlimited Race at an average speed of 491.822 mph in a time of 8:10.357, almost 13 seconds ahead of John Penney in Rare Bear, an F8F Bearcat. Third place went to Sherman Smoot in the Yak 11 Czech Mate. It was only Hinton's second appearance in the Unlimited class but he's been around the sport since he attended his first Reno races when he was two weeks old. His father Steve Sr. is a two-time Unlimited champion and Strega is no stranger to the winner's circle, having won the event seven time. Full results are available here.

Paul Bonhomme finishes on top in Red Bull Air Race in Porto - thelondonpaper.com
Nigel Lamb, 53, is left in a stew after failing to reach the super-eight stage, but fellow Briton Paul Bonhomme, 44, is full of bonhomie after winning the dramatic finale to move four points ahead of Austrian rival Hannes Arch, who later insists: "It's not over yet!"
Bonhomme, a commercial airline pilot, narrowly missed out on the title in 2007 and 2008 and confesses to having "changed tactics" in a bid to go one better.
He adds: "But tactics don't count for much if you don't do what you set out to, so maybe that's what I'm getting better at."
Compatriot Lamb admits the sport, which demands exceptional skills but provides thrilling entertainment, is "very dangerous".
He says: "If you make the wrong decision you can hit the surface. But everyone here has spent a lot of time in our machines, which become extensions of us.
"It's a risk-management exercise but you've always got an exit strategy and I very much feel I am the master of my destiny." ...

For all you Martin 4-0-4 fans out there - some great photos from Unusual Attitude by Kieran Daly

Lindbergh Foundation Seeks Applicants For Aviation Grants from AVwebFlash Current Issue
The Lindbergh Foundation has extended its deadline for submissions of aviation-related grant applications until Oct. 30. "Anyone conducting an aviation/aerospace research project that balances technological advancements with the preservation of our environment is encouraged to apply," the foundation said. The grants are given to individuals, who are not required to be associated with a university, business, or nonprofit group. Awards are made for up to $10,580 -- the amount that Charles Lindbergh spent to build the Spirit of St. Louis. In recent years, grants have gone to help develop electric-powered airplanes, to increase fuel efficiency by reducing drag, and to reduce noise pollution by using high-frequency sound waves from ultrasonic actuators. The grants aim to support innovative ideas at earlier stages of development and establish pilot projects that often subsequently receive funding from other sources, the Foundation said.

Jetpack First Flights On eBay from AVwebFlash Current Issue
If Glenn Martin has gauged his market correctly, there should be lineup of adrenaline junkies bidding to become the first "test pilot" of the Martin Jetpack. The always-innovative Martin is auctioning off the first six flights of the piston-powered, ducted fan contrivance available to the public on eBay. The winning bidder can take the prize on their own or invite up to three friends to take part in the historic occasion. The winner will be responsible for their own expenses in getting to New Zealand for the three-days of training and flying. Martin says anyone who can strap into the device can submit a bid. "Whoever wins this auction, whether it's a highly qualified pilot or someone who has never flown before, we will be able to tailor a testing program for the jetpack that matches their skill," he said.
