2011 Windsor International Air Show Review

Location: Windsor International Airport, Ontario, Canada

This was the 3rd annual Windsor air show in recent times, and it is one of the biggest held annually in Ontario.
Group photo of the CF-18 Demo Team, the SkyHawks and the Snowbirds at WIAS. For more images from the show visit us here.

The Windsor International Air Show (WIAS) has a great potential to become one of Canada's premier air shows, if the weather cooperates! This year once again it was hampered by rain and cloudy weather to a large extent, which is of course, out of the hands of the organizers. Regardless, on the weekend the show did go on. It was more than just thunder from the weather that made thunderous noise, it was from the jet aircraft from the Royal Canadian Air Force, from the USAF, USN and from the US Marines.

On Saturday several performances were cut short or were cancelled outright including the OPP Motorcycle demo, due to rain. Still, thousands toured the US KC-135 fuel tankers and US transport aircraft in the static area, and cheered Astronaut and Space Station Commander Chris Hadfield in Hawk One. Sunday too started out with a bit of rain, but it cleared up by opening, and by far it was the best day to attend WIAS.

The Canadian Icons, the Snowbirds, with the help of the Canadian Forces Skyhawks Parachute Team and the CF-18 Demo Team, dazzled the spectators in the sky with their precise maneuverings and flying skills. Additionally, several WWII and warbirds from the collection of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and the Vintage Wings of Canada performed. They were supplemented by four Harvards from the Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association, and a couple of civilian flyers, including Pete McLeod of Red Bull fame.

Compared to the 2010 show, there were less static aircraft. This was due mostly to the date of the show: 9/11! Many American cities and air bases remembered this tragic event's 10th anniversary by staging an air show themselves. Accordingly, this made less aircraft available to perform at WIAS and there were no top tier US performers.

To add additional interest there were performances by FLASH FIRE II a jet truck, and the CBC television comedian Rick Mercer from the Rick Mercer Report was present for a taping of his show. There were antique vehicles again a bit less due to the rain than last year. Click here to see additional images of Rick Mercer at the show.

The attendance was about the same as last year, approximately 43,000. We at AirShowsReview wish to thank all the people who have welcomed us, and who organized the air show. Our gratitude goes out to all of you and especially to Keith and Theresa Baxter. We will be back next year!

2011 CIAS Review by www.AirShowsReview.com

Mother Nature hasn’t cooperated much when it comes to the annual Canadian International Air Show lately. The weather was a deciding factor this year too when it came to flying. But despite the hazy, overcast and foggy skies that varied over the air show days, so did the temperatures from hot (close to 40C with humidity factored in) and very humid, to windy and almost chilly (15C on Monday). The three day air show found satisfaction in the hearts of the enthusiasts who were present.

There were several highlights this year at the CIAS. By far, with its first time visit to Canada, the MV-22B Osprey from the US Marines Corps was the pinnacle. This was followed by the A-10 West Demo Team of the USAF from Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona, and the Heavy Metal Jet Team, who were in Toronto for the first time too. Maj. General Stephen L. Hoog, USAF, Commander, 9th Air Force, Air Combat Command, Shaw AFB, S.C., was present on Sunday.

From the Canadian Forces, the Royal Canadian Navy’s HMCS Shawinigan participated in some fast maneuvering to thrill the crowds, and the Royal Canadian Air Force’s CF-18 Demo Team as well as the Snowbirds showed off their wings, weather permitting. On Saturday due to severe storms and lightning, the Snowbirds were unable to take off from Pearson International airport. The much anticipated Skyhawks parachute team cancelled their jump for the event too, but the crowds were compensated by several fly-bys by the CP-140 Aurora.

There were several civilian performers. Among them: Mike Wiskus, Pete McLeod, and Rick Volker, as well as the Air Cadets. The historical Lancaster bomber from Hamilton made an appearance during the air show.

CIAS is a waterfront air show as part of the Canadian National Exhibition, and technically it is a free event, even if you do not buy tickets to the Ex, as one can see the air show from the parks along the lakeshore of Ontario. There are no static displays available for the general public. For photography, the lighting condition is very far from ideal. You are shooting into the sun all day if there is sunlight, so in essence, a cloudy day or days are preferable for photographers.

Over all the show was good, and seemed to be better organized than in the past several years. I would like to thank Colleen Swider, Manager of Public Affairs and Media Relations, and her staff for their hospitality.

Embry-Riddle Narrows Its List To Two Cities from Aviation Blogs
Houston is vying with a northern Illinois city for the home of the next aeronautical university campus, with its 60,000-square-foot academic center and a hangar.
Last month, the Daytona Beach, Fla.-based Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University announced plans to build its third residential campus. The prestigious university that teaches aviation and aerospace is deciding between the Ellington Airport area and Rockford, Ill., which is nearly 90 miles northwest of Chicago. It had considered other cities, including Los Angeles, before shortening its list. ....

Windsor International Air Show was one of the BEST!

Windsor International Air Show -- August 21-22
reviewed by www.airshowsreview.com
Location: Windsor International Airport, Windsor
Admission: $12 for adults and $6 for youth
Parking: $5
Value: Excellent

The 2nd annual Windsor Air Show was held at the Windsor International Airport, aka “The Sound of Freedom II” on August 21 and 22, 2010. In addition, on August 20 th, Friday, a special day for kids was held. They received a tour of the static aircraft parked and met the crews of the aircraft from Brazil, USA, and Canada while sharing some pizza, soft drinks, and juice with them. The Windsor air show also caters to all the veterans who can attend the air show as VIP guests at no charge! What a great way to honour our Freedom by saying thank you to all who served!

The Gates open for the general public at 9:00 a.m., however a special "Photo Pass" would allow serious photographers in at 8:00 a.m., to take photos of static displays and pertforming aircraft on the hot ramp! Well worth the additional cost.

The venue has plenty of food vendors and sanitation facilities. It is also a good place for families since there are many activities for children.

The Windsor air show was an outstanding effort, despite the weather not cooperating much. On Saturday, most of the performances did take place, although some were cut short due to rain and low visibility. Most air shows that we have attended in the past would have cancelled, however, the organizer wanted to give the attendees their moneys worth as long as the safety of everyone was not jeopardized. They certainly succeeded in their efforts, as the attendees were dazzled by the precise flying display of the Brazilian Team: The Esquadrilha da Fumaca who flew as per schedule, and what a great performance that was, especially under these circumstances! The Lancaster bomber, from Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, made several nicely banked low level passes and it was good to hear the sound of those 4 Royce Rolls V12 engines. The Canadian Harvard Associations 3 ship Aerobatic Team did a solid performance. The Viper North’s MiG-15Uti was a real hit, even with a very short performance due to the weather. While the CF-18 Team lost their plane a of couple weeks ago, the Canadian Forces sent two CF-18; one static, and one to perform at Windsor. However, the CF-18 had to land shortly after it took off due to deteriorating weather, and just after it landed, the show was called for the day without the Snowbirds flying on Saturday. As for the show announcer – the only “snowboard” at the air show was you!

On Sunday, while it started a bit overcast, at least it did not rain and toward mid-morning the weather started to clear a bit, and toward mid-afternoon it was very pleasant. All the scheduled acts flew, although some of their performances were a bit on the short side. The highlights for me, were the Brazilian Smoke Squadron who did a precise and interesting show, the WWII Warbirds: P-51D Mustang, Hurricane, Lancaster, Lysander, and the Firefly, the rare MiG-15Uti, and the Harvard Aerobatic Team. The CF-18 while it flew, it was very short, just wetting the appetite for more, but at least the CF-18 was at the show. The Snowbirds finally performed too.

The Windsor air show organization, led by Keith Baxter, did an excellent job, and the show deserves a 10/10. But please for next year have a Canadian announcer, who knows the difference between a “snowboard” and “Snowbird”, who can identify aircraft properly, who can actually announce the direction aircraft is coming from before it arrives to show center, and can tell the difference between an aircraft already landed, vs. one which is still flying!

Major Aircraft/Performers Presented:
Brazilian Smoke Squadron
Snowbirds
Canadian Harvard Associations Aerobatic Team
MiG-15 Uti from Viper North
B-52H Bomber
C-17
CF-18
(2) F-16
F-15C Eagle
Lysander
Lancaster
and too many others to list.

Over all the Windsor air show is not only an excellent value for the money spent, but it was the BEST Canadian Air Show so far in 2010!

In memory of Alejandro Maclean 1969-2010 - Red Bull Air Races
It is with great sadness that we share the loss of Red Bull Air Race pilot Alejandro (Alex) Maclean, who has died today at the age of 41 following a fatal accident in his native Spain while carrying out aerobatic training for an Air Show. Our thoughts are with his wife Emma and their two children aged 7 and 12.  The entire Red Bull Air Race community and the aerobatic fraternity have lost one of their most vibrant and passionate characters. Alex’s significant contribution to the growth and development of the Red Bull Air Race over the past six years and to aviation in general will be remembered forever by those who shared this journey with him. ...

KC-135 Ride! 434th ARW (Grissom Air Reserve Base) + Thirsty B-52 by Martt
On Wednesday, July 21, 2010 I had the extreme pleasure of getting to go along on a KC-135 refueling flight operated by the 74th Air Refueling Squadron, which is part of the 434th Air Refueling Wing, based at the Grissom Air Reserve Base  near Peru, Indiana. That puts Grissom ARB is about 60 miles straight north of Indianapolis, and about 50 miles south-southwest of where I'm at in Warsaw, Indiana. It was a special 'social media' flight that gave me and other folks from outlets like Indy Transponder, Flight Line Internet Radio, My Sky Mom, myTransponder and more, the opportunity to see an air refueling mission up close and personal. Wow! I must say it was an awesome experience! ...

The Future of Vintage Aircraft Operation and Restoration from Another Time
A few years from now will we still see vintage aircraft flying through the skies?  What does the future hold!?
Many issues come to mind in looking to the future of vintage aircraft operation and restoration.  Issues related to engine parts, airframe parts, fuel, and the costs of all of those items rolled into what we will call "operational costs" for this article.  Who has the skills and tools to restore and maintain vintage aircraft?  Are the skills to fly these aircraft being taught to new pilots today?  Then, what could be done to generate an interest in flying? What needs ...
