How’d You Get That Shot? – Legacy Hornet / Helldiver « Tyson V. Rininger's Blog from tvrphoto.wordpress.com | When I arrived at NAS Lemoore in California’s Central Valley, I had already seen many of the commemorative jets painted to celebrate the Centennial of Naval Aviation. Sitting on the ramp, all by itself, was an F-18C adorned with a paint scheme I hadn’t yet seen before. If it weren’t for the presence of the world’s only SB2C-5 Helldiver operated by the Commemorative Air Force, I don’t think I would ever have made the connection. The Hornet emulated the looks of a WWII Helldiver unit. What were the odds that both of these aircraft would be at the same location?...

LARGEST COLLECTION OF NAVAL AIRCRAFT SPANNING ALL ERAS MARKS CENTENNIAL AT EAA AIRVENTURE 2011 #OSH11

Unique flying warbirds, special programs will honor legacy of naval aviation all week

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wis. — (May 19, 2011) — Celebrating 100 years in one week, the largest collection of naval aircraft spanning all eras ever assembled in one location is coming together for EAA AirVenture 2011 during its week-long Centennial of Naval Aviation commemoration.

The 59th annual edition of “The World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration,” scheduled for July 25-31 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, will feature special attractions, appearances, and forums as part of its Tier 1 event status from the U.S. Navy for the year-long centennial festivities.

From unique restorations and replicas to today’s modern fighters, the legacy of naval aviation will be on display and in action all week at AirVenture 2011. Flying examples will be featured on ConocoPhillips Plaza, as well as a special parking area dubbed “NAS Oshkosh” located just east of Scotts Warbird Alley.

Among the dozens of unique aircraft anticipated are several World War II and Korean War-era naval warbirds, including the only flying SB2C Helldiver Navy dive bomber in the world, one of two airworthy PV-2 Harpoons, OY1/L-5B USMC Observation aircraft that saw combat during the Battle of Iwo Jima, a rare Temco Pinto jet trainer, TBM Navy torpedo bomber featuring the paint scheme of the aircraft flown by President George H.W. Bush, an award-winning SNJ Navy trainer, F8F Bearcat in a Blue Angels paint scheme, Grumman J2F Duck Navy amphibian, F4U Corsairs, FM2 Wildcat, and F7F Tigercat.

Vietnam War-era will be represented by a Douglas R4D, Douglas AD Skyraider, Douglas A-4 Skyhawk, and North American T-2 Buckeye, with more to be added. Bookending the centennial attractions are a replica of the Curtiss-Ely Pusher that made the first carrier landing on the deck of the USS Pennsylvania in 1911 and more than 25 current naval aircraft repainted in colors from previous eras.

A listing of aircraft confirmed is available at www.airventure.org/attractions/aircraft.html, with more to be added in the upcoming weeks.

“There is no other place where you can see a gathering of aircraft of this magnitude representing all eras of naval aviation over the past 100 years,” said Tom Poberezny, EAA and AirVenture chairman. “This epic event will not only honor the heritage of these legendary warbirds, as well as the brave men and women who served and sacrificed in them. You’ll hear their stories and see their beloved aircraft come to life.”

Several forums and special programs, including the always popular Warbirds in Review, highlight activities each day, along with afternoon air show showcases, and a naval-focused Living History Encampment featuring wartime reenactors. To mark its 25th anniversary, the naval aviation classic film “Top Gun” is scheduled to be shown at the EAA Fly-In Theater. The Fly-In Theater is presented by Ford Motor Company and supported by Hamilton Watches.

On Wednesday, July 27, a themed “Navy Day” will feature a full day of activities surrounding the centennial, including dedicated forums on ConocoPhillips Plaza and Warbirds in Review, a special tribute during the afternoon air show, an “Honor Flight” featuring approximately 80 World War II naval veterans departing AirVenture for Washington, D.C., on a Southwest Airlines 737, and a special evening program featuring very notable naval aviation figures and guests at Theater in the Woods, whose programs are supported by M&Ms.

More details surrounding “Navy Day” on Wednesday, July 27, will be announced next week.

Additionally, Navy veterans will lead the “Salute to Veterans” parade from Scotts Warbird Alley to ConocoPhillips Plaza on Friday, July 29, as part of that day’s salute activities.

AirVenture 2011 is filled with must-see features and attractions all week, including tribute days dedicated to aviation legends Burt Rutan (Thursday, July 28) and Bob Hoover (Tuesday, July 26) as well as several attractions and events commemorating the 100th anniversary of air mail service.

Entertainment lasts well into the evening each day, including a couple premier concerts that all ages will enjoy. REO Speedwagon will get AirVenture 2011 off to a rocking start with the Opening Day Concert presented by the Ford Motor Company on Monday, July 25. Highlighting the weekend is “Super Saturday” presented by Southwest Airlines on Saturday, July 30, which will feature country star Aaron Tippin in concert leading into the widely popular Night Air Show and Daher-Socata Fireworks.

Advance purchase admission tickets at a discounted rate as well as camping for all dates are now available at www.airventure.org/tickets

Air Power Expo 2011 Air Show Photo Review

Warbirds at NAS Fort Worth JRB - April 16-17, 2011
Warbirds and Airshows
By David D Jackson
NAS Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base had its annual air show this year with me in attendance for the first time looking forward to being able to spend time on the ramps that many years ago had B-36s sitting on them when it was previously Carswell AFB.  It is also the location where portions of the 1955 movie "Strategic Air Command" with James Stewart, June Allyson and the B-36 were shot.  So this is a historic aviation location to visit and watch an air show at.  Most of the warbirds were static at the event but a warbird aerobatic act new to me was the locally based Trojan Phlyers consisting of two T-28Bs that put on a very nice combination aerobatic and formation show.  Even though they have been flying shows since 1999 this is the first time I have been able to see them.
B-29 'Fifi" making a special unplanned flyby on Sunday for the air show crowd.  This replaced the B-52 flyby that occurred on Saturday only.
Flag Jump to open the show by the Special Operations Command Para-Commandos.

Five F-18 Hornets from VFA-204 at NAS New Orleans Joint Reserve Base along with one Northrop F-5 opened the show right after the flag jump.  I have never seen a formation like this.  This was great!

This great looking UC-45 on static display belongs to James Martin of Odessa, TX.

One of the two Trojan Phlyers going up over the top in an aerobatic maneuver.

This static display PV-2, "Attu Warrior", is owned by Dave Hansen and came all the way from Heber City, UT to be part of the event.

The River Rattlers and F-5 making the overhead approach and break for landing.

Over the top.

This Harrier sucked asphalt chunks up into the engine during the practice show on Friday during the hover demonstration.  The pilot was unaware he was over the meltable material.  It takes 500 hours of labor to change the engine, which is going on in the photo.

One can see the dings in the turbine blades.  No doubt similar damage happened through the entire engine.

Pacific Prowler made the short hop from Meacham Airport a few miles to the North East in Ft. Worth.

One of the Trojan Phlyers is in Marine markings and the other in Navy.  Otherwise they are painted the same.

The great nose art that owner Jim Terry has had applied to the aircraft.

Trojan Phlyers formation pass.

The world's only flyable Curtiss SB2C Helldiver which is operated by the Commemorative Air Force out of Midland, TX.

EAA volunteers and staff have finished painting air racing Legend John Livingston’s original custom-built 1928 Waco CTO Taperwing. The new look sports the livery of the Mid-West Airways Corporation, a short-lived airline based in Waterloo, Iowa, that was operated by Livingston in the early 1930s. Between 1928 and 1933 Livingston participated in 139 air races, both pylon and cross-country, placing in the top three in all except two. The world's largest free-standing building gets a second lease on life.
German Entrepreneur Carl von Gablenz had an unusual vision: a fleet of giant helium airships that would haul outsize industrial loads, such as oil rigs or wind turbine blades, to remote areas of the globe. According to the report, the Red Arrows, the Royal Air Force display team, may be on its way out. Electric Aircraft & Air Show Possibilities from Jetwhine by Scott Spangler | On many levels the 2010 Electric Aircraft World Symposium was a surprise. Sponsored by GE Aviation and held at the EAA museum on AirVenture Friday, I expected a geek fest with a small audience of a hundred or less, because that's the space available in the Founder's Wing, the symposium's original location. But when I hoofed my way to the museum, I saw Kermit Week's Mosquito parked outside. Being an old all-wood airplane, I've never seen EAA do that before. The reason, I soon discovered, is that three or four times as many people had signed up, so they moved all the airplanes out of the Eagle Hangar (except for the XP-51), to make room for everyone…

How I Broke Chuck Yeager's Rock – By Ed Shipley from ASB.tv by Ed Shipley | Some years ago my good friend Jim Beasley and I got a chance to do some formation flying in P-51 Mustangs with WWII legends Chuck Yeager and Bud Anderson. Chuck and Bud were very kind to Jimmy and me and quite complimentary of our flying with them. After one of our flights together they invited Jimmy and I to join them on their historic High Sierra Mountain camping trip. Jimmy and I were stunned. This was the very camping trip we had read about in Yeager's autobiography. Why in the world would these two historic fighter pilots want us to tag along with them? We soon got an inkling when Yeager produced a legal document that defined us as "Junior Campers" and required Jimmy and I to carry whatever they deemed necessary and walk no closer than six feet behind them…

Do not wear underwear made of synthetic fibres when flying from Wright Squawks by Roger Chua | What to wear - In the improbable event of an emergency, the clothes you are wearing can play a significant role in your safety. People wear synthetic blend fabrics because they area easy to maintain and do not wrinkle when spending a long time seated. However, they ignite quickly, shrink, melt, and continue burning after the heat source is removed. In the unlikely event that the aircraft is evacuated even pantyhose contribute to injuries, as they melt and cause burns from the friction generated with contact on the slide…

The Australian Canberra in Vietnam from Aviation Trivia of the Day by JP Santiago | Monday I'd posted about the South Vietnamese Air Force's brief, if not flawed, operation of the Martin B-57 Canberra during the Vietnam War. They weren't the only nation outside of the United States to operate the Canberra in Southeast Asia. In 1967, the English Electric Canberra Mk.20s of the Royal Australian Air Force's No. 2 Squadron arrived at Phan Rang AB, which at the time was home to the USAF Martin B-57 operation under the aegis of the 35th Tactical Fighter Wing (an F-100 Super Sabre outfit)…
