Community Groups Benefit from Wide Bay Australia International Airshow

The Wide Bay Australia International Airshow is shaping up to be a true community event with over 19 community organisations collaboratively working together to ensure the success of the event. The Royal Flying Doctors Service and Leukaemia Foundation are the main charities supported by the Airshow however behind the scenes individuals from a range of community groups are collaboratively working together.

Organisations are assisting with important elements of the event such as car parking, catering, camping, infrastructure, the event communications centre, site preparation for pyrotechnics and first aid. Benefitting groups from throughout the region include Gin Gin Scouts, Scouts Kepnock, Hinkler Lions, IMPACT crews, Rotary Sunrise, Woodgate SES, Woodgate Rural Fire Service, Goodwood Rural Fire Service and St Johns Ambulance.

“It is important to hold an event that supports our community groups and maximizes the economic benefits throughout our community. At the same time our event could not succeed without the support of these groups” said Daryl Corpe, Chairman, Wide Bay Australia International Airshow.

The event also provides an opportunity for community organisations to promote themselves. This year MAF, Angel Flight, Red Cross Blood Bank, Army Cadets, Air Force Cadets, Crimestoppers, Early Holden Car Club and Bundy Thunder will have a site.

“It is about promoting the active involvement of our community. It is about creating an event that brings benefits to our region through our community groups and through the economic benefits” said Daryl Corpe.

The Wide Bay Australia International Air show is an annual event showcasing Australia’s leading performing pilots, vintage aircraft and aerobatic displays. RAAF & RAN WW2 & Korean Conflict Fighter Heritage Flight

See history come to life and help celebrate the Royal Australian Air Force’s 90th Anniversary at the Wide Bay Australia International Airshow 2011 in Bundaberg.

The Wide Bay Australia International Airshow is generating great interest overseas as one of best Displays of Vintage and Warbird aircraft in the Southern Hemisphere. And it is with great excitement that we can announce the inclusion of a RAAF & RAN WW2 & Korean Conflict Fighter Heritage Flight, make sure you bring your camera for this one.

The flight will consist of five of the key RAAF & RAN that served on the front lines defending the nation in our time of need. Aircraft in the heritage flight will include.
The Wirraway, which although thought of by many as a trainer was the first RAAF Aircraft to fire a shot in anger against Japanese forces in the Pacific. The CAC Wirraway which is Aboriginal for 'challenge' was built as an advanced trainer however at the outbreak of WW2 Wirraways were deployed to forward bases in Malaya, Rabaul , and Darwin . In January 1942, Flight Lieutenant B. Anderson of No 24 Squadron became the first RAAF pilot to engage in air-to-air combat in the South-West Pacific, when his Wirraway intercepted a Japanese flying-boat over Rabaul. A fortnight later, Wirraways based at Rabaul achieved immortal fame when eight Wirraways, engaged a force of over 100 Japanese fighters and
bombers.

The CAC Boomerang is significant as the first combat aircraft designed and built in Australia and in a feat of pure Australian ingenuity the first aircraft progressed from drawing board to first flight in only 14 weeks. In contrast to Europe or North Africa, the ground war in the jungles of the south-west Pacific, demanded a completely different style of flying where pilots needed to stay close to the troops flying at high speed close to the ground as possible where the Boomerang’s heavy armament and sprightly low-level handling, extensive armour plating and rugged construction helped pilots avoid ground fire, where the Boomerang gained the enemy nickname “Whistling Death” due to it’s formidable firepower and distinctive engine and exhaust sound when in a dive.

The CAC Mustang, The Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation built 200 CAC-17 & 18 Mustang’s in Victoria under licence from North American Aviation in the U.S. and although built in Australia, is known more famously under it’s U.S. designation of P-51D. Historically the Mustang is renowned as one of the greatest warplanes ever built and upon its introduction into service during WW2 proved to be one of the marvels of aviation that provided to be a turning point in World War II and in spite of being superseded by jet fighters the Mustang remained in service with some air
forces until the early 1980’s.

The P40 Kittyhawk was the main fighter used by the RAAF in World War II and in greater numbers than the Spitfire. RAAF Kittyhawks also played a crucial role in the South West Pacific theatre. They fought on the front line as fighters during the critical early years of the Pacific War, and the durability and bomb-carrying abilities (1,000 lb/454 kg) of the P-40 also made it ideal as a ground attack aircraft.

Hawker Sea Fury - The last propeller-driven fighter to serve with the Royal Australian Navy, The Sea Fury was also one of the fastest production single piston-engine aircraft ever built. The Sea Fury served with the Royal Australian Navy with distinction on the aircraft carriers HMAS Sydney and HMAS Melbourne. In August 1948, Royal Australian Navy 805 Squadron Fleet Air Arm squadron operating Hawker Sea Fury Mk II aircraft formed part of the 20th Carrier Air Group embarked on HMAS Sydney. During September 1951, 805 Squadron deployed to Korea and served with distinction being awarded with the battle honours being awarded to the squadron during the deployment.
Join us at the Wide Bay Australia International Airshow and experience first hand our World War II tribute with the most varied collection of World War II Fighters to gather in Queensland.

The Wide Bay Australia International Airshow 2011 will be held in Bundaberg on the 19th – 21st August 2011. Early Bird tickets are currently available. Visit us at www.widebayairshow.com.au for further information and for early bird tickets. Early bird specials only available until 30 June 2011.

Post World War II Aircraft to Take Wide Bay Australia International Airshow Attendees Back in Time

In addition to the Classic World War II fighter aircraft on display at the upcoming 2011 Wide Bay Australia International Airshow attendees will be able to take in the sights and sounds of some of the finest post World War II aircraft. From those that sounded the last hurrah for the radial piston engine, to the aircraft that heralded the beginning of the jet age, several of the standout aircraft of this era will be performing during the Airshow.

Included will be the famous Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15, which was one of the first successful swept-wing jet fighters and one that achieved fame in the skies over Korea. The Mig-15 took designers and pilots from allied counties by complete surprise, as at the time the Soviet Union was believed to be 5 to 10 years behind in aircraft design. The MiG-15 is believed to be one of the most widely produced jet aircraft ever made, with over 18,000 built in the former soviet republics. The MiG-15 is often named along with other such great aircraft as the P51 Mustang as one of the best fighter aircraft of all time from all era’s.

The Hawker Hunter was one of the second generation of British jet fighter aircraft and saw service from the 1950s until the 1990’s. The Hunter served for many years with the Royal Air Force and was widely exported, serving with 19 air forces around the world. The most famous or infamous high point for the Hawker Hunter occurred on 5 April 1968 when a lone hunter pilot decided on his own initiative to mark the occasion of the RAF anniversary with an unauthorized display. He flew a Hawker Hunter single-seat jet fighter over London at low level, past the Houses of Parliament and finally under the top span of London’s Tower Bridge. Knowing that he was likely to be stripped of his flying status as a result of this display, he proceeded to "Barnstorm" several airfields in inverted flight at an altitude of about 200 feet on his way back to his base at RAF West Raynham.

The North American Aviation T-28 Trojan was one of the very last of the radial pistonengined military aircraft used by the United States Air Force and United States Navy beginning in the 1950’s. The T-28 was successfully employed as a Counter-insurgency (COIN) aircraft, primarily during the Vietnam War and were also used by the CIA in the former Belgian Congo during the 1960‘s. The French Airforce also used locally remanufactured Trojans for close support missions in Algeria. The T28 has served with no less than 28 counties around the world and is well known for the distinctive deep rumble of it’s powerful Wright Cyclone R-1820 radial engine which produces around 1,500 hp which is equivalent to about three V8 supercars. Visitors to the Airshow should prepare to feel the noise!!!

‘We are continuing to provide new acts and introducing aircraft that will create an exciting atmosphere. These aircraft are popular for young and old and are a great addition to our air/program” said Daryl Corpe, Chairperson of the Wide Bay Australia International Airshow.

Why? Because the history of aviation is linked to the development of our society. Behind the airplanes, spacecraft and associated artifacts is the story of people striving to do the impossible.” Read the full post here.
