Post World War II Aircraft to Take Wide Bay Australia International Airshow Attendees Back in Time

In addition to the Classic World War II fighter aircraft on display at the upcoming 2011 Wide Bay Australia International Airshow attendees will be able to take in the sights and sounds of some of the finest post World War II aircraft. From those that sounded the last hurrah for the radial piston engine, to the aircraft that heralded the beginning of the jet age, several of the standout aircraft of this era will be performing during the Airshow.

Included will be the famous Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15, which was one of the first successful swept-wing jet fighters and one that achieved fame in the skies over Korea. The Mig-15 took designers and pilots from allied counties by complete surprise, as at the time the Soviet Union was believed to be 5 to 10 years behind in aircraft design. The MiG-15 is believed to be one of the most widely produced jet aircraft ever made, with over 18,000 built in the former soviet republics. The MiG-15 is often named along with other such great aircraft as the P51 Mustang as one of the best fighter aircraft of all time from all era’s.

The Hawker Hunter was one of the second generation of British jet fighter aircraft and saw service from the 1950s until the 1990’s. The Hunter served for many years with the Royal Air Force and was widely exported, serving with 19 air forces around the world. The most famous or infamous high point for the Hawker Hunter occurred on 5 April 1968 when a lone hunter pilot decided on his own initiative to mark the occasion of the RAF anniversary with an unauthorized display. He flew a Hawker Hunter single-seat jet fighter over London at low level, past the Houses of Parliament and finally under the top span of London’s Tower Bridge. Knowing that he was likely to be stripped of his flying status as a result of this display, he proceeded to "Barnstorm" several airfields in inverted flight at an altitude of about 200 feet on his way back to his base at RAF West Raynham.

The North American Aviation T-28 Trojan was one of the very last of the radial pistonengined military aircraft used by the United States Air Force and United States Navy beginning in the 1950’s. The T-28 was successfully employed as a Counter-insurgency (COIN) aircraft, primarily during the Vietnam War and were also used by the CIA in the former Belgian Congo during the 1960‘s. The French Airforce also used locally remanufactured Trojans for close support missions in Algeria. The T28 has served with no less than 28 counties around the world and is well known for the distinctive deep rumble of it’s powerful Wright Cyclone R-1820 radial engine which produces around 1,500 hp which is equivalent to about three V8 supercars. Visitors to the Airshow should prepare to feel the noise!!!

‘We are continuing to provide new acts and introducing aircraft that will create an exciting atmosphere. These aircraft are popular for young and old and are a great addition to our air/program” said Daryl Corpe, Chairperson of the Wide Bay Australia International Airshow.

The 2011 Wide Bay Australia International Airshow rediscovers the performance of days gone by. Come and be entertained – 19th – 21st August 2011. You won’t be disappointed!

Indy Transponder On Site At Sun-N-Fun Saturday 4-2-11 (AirPigz)

(16 pix) AirPigz.com
My Saturday morning at Sun-n-Fun 2011 started at the commercial exhibits not far from the camping area. This yellow and white biplane stood out right away as something special. Obviously not 'Pitts' special, but very cool nonetheless. It's the Fk12 Comet, a Rotax 912 LSA that promises fun in a way pretty much no other LSA could even dream about. The wings are fabric covered, but the structure underneath is all composite, and the fuselage is mostly welded steel tube with aluminum tube for the aft section. Lots of interesting and innovative thinking in this light, sporty, aircraft!

The American Legend display of modern Cubs included one with no fabric on it so all of the structure was visible. The use of modern materials and a variety of interesting design changes takes the timeless original Cub design even closer to perfection. I'm still dreaming about the one from yesterday on amphibious floats!

After being hit so hard by the tornado on Thursday, the Air Cam display was looking almost back together. I was glad to see they hadn't given up after losing 4 airplanes... hopefully they'll head back home with several new orders on the books to take some of the sting out of a really rough year at SNF11.

This awesome DC-7 was at Oshkosh in 2010 but for some reason I never got around to doing the $5 tour thru it. Today I decided I really needed to check it out. What a great experience. I wound up spending some time with the operators and really enjoyed talking airplanes with them. They're into all kinds of cool stuff that I'm going to posting about in the future, and I'll have a detailed post up before long on the DC-7 too.

These two Stearman trainers were parked in the vintage aircraft area, and as you can clearly see they were camping there too. You just can't beat camping with an airplane that has two wings and a round engine. This is really living!

You may have noticed that I'm a bit of a Pitts Model 12 fanatic. I just can't resist posting pictures of them from time to time. Not only are they just gorgeous to look at from a design point of view, but almost every one of them you see has a fantastic paint job. This one belongs to Kendal Simpson, aka Acronut.

There's a good variety of warbirds to check out this year. Lots of T-28's or course, and this B-25 was interesting with the big guns in the nose and the access hatch opened up. It made for another good spot to use my camera-on-a-stick procedure.

For some reason, seeing those huge props and spinners on the P-3 just scream out 'airshow' to me... and a flag jump obviously does too. I don't think I ever remembering seeing a flag jump that includedcanopy relative work like this tho. I liked it.

The F-22 Raptor was pretty high on most people's list of things they wanted to see today, and I was no different. I was able to get positioned in a really cool spot which allowed me to get the picture looking up the tail pipes after engine start. Wow, what a cool sight! There's a lot of heat being made there. You can also see the heat in the takeoff pic. Love the heat!
The flight display (which most effectively turns kerosene into noise) had only been underway a few minutes when the pilot got a cockpit warning that something wasn't right. Fortunately the problem allowed him both the chance to get some altitude and then plenty of time to set up an approach. He landed with the P-51 that would have later been part of a Heritage Flight off his right wing.
It would appear that there was something actually wrong with the airplane since it was towed back from where it had rolled out on the runway. I didn't hear any verified word on what the situation was, but ultimately all that mattered was that it all ended well.

The special spot I was in that allowed me to get the great view of the F-22 from behind also gave me this view of the P-51. Pictures of great airplanes are really nice, but wow, I wish you could have heard what I heard about 3 seconds after I took this pic. I just don't know if there's a better sound on Earth than a Rolls Royce Merlin!
I'm planning to get some great pix of the Blue Angels up in the next post... stay tuned : )

Aviation History on Display within the Tokyo 東京 area and northern Honshu 本州  from Travel for Aircraft by travelforaircraft | Aviation History on Display within the Tokyo 東京 area and northern Honshu 本州 | The recent 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami (東北地方太平洋沖地震 — Tōhoku Chihō Taiheiyō-oki Jishin), centered near Sendai Japan, initiated a post about aviation history that may be endangered in the immediate area of Sendai. A road trip, and some sobering economic realities  from Bayou Renaissance Man by Peter | Miss D. and I have just returned from a brief road trip, heading up through Kentucky to Ohio and back again. We took the opportunity to visit the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio, which was very interesting indeed.  My major complaint about the Museum is that parts of it are not very photographer-friendly. For example, the Cold War display is very dark (including a black-painted ceiling), with spotlights illuminating the aircraft. That makes it very difficult to take pictures, as this one I took of the Convair B-58 Hustler bomber illustrates.
