Bombers Take the Skies at AIRSHO 2011

Midland, Texas (Sept. 30, 2011) — The 2011 Commemorative Air Force (CAF) AIRSHO® presented by Western National Bank is just a few short days away and this year, the CAF will be darkening the skies with the massive bombers of World War II and today!

“This year is all about the bombers,” said CAF Colonel/Volunteer AIRSHO Chairman, Gena Linebarger. “No other show in the country can feature this massive array of aircraft. Two B-17s, a B-24, four B-25s and the Queen of the CAF Fleet, the world’s only flying B-29, FIFI, will take the skies over Midland/Odessa! AND, we aren’t stopping at World War II! The B-1B Lancer and the B-2 (best known as the Stealth Bomber) will be soaring over AIRSHO crowds! This is an AIRSHO you can’t miss!”

In addition to the massive display of bombers, AIRSHO will feature World War II training, observation, transport and fighter aircraft. The exciting aerobatic displays of Corkey Fornof and Jan Collmer will thrill audiences as they spiral through the sky and the A-10 West Demo Team will demonstrate the capabilities of the A-10 Thunderbolt II in an exciting performance! For a complete list of aircraft please visit www.airsho.org.*

The 2011 AIRSHO will also feature a patriotic performance of the CAF’s Red, White & Loud Tour starring Aaron Tippin and the B-29 FIFI. Country music star and patriot, Aaron Tippin, will perform his chart-topping songs Where the Stars and Stripes and the Eagle Fly, Kiss This and many more from a stage built into the wing of the historic B-29! This is a great performance not to be missed! The concert is included in AIRSHO admission and does not require an additional ticket.

Also making its debut appearance at this year’s AIRSHO is the CAF Red Tail Squadron RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit. The RISE ABOVE exhibit brings public awareness of the Tuskegee Airmen by taking their story to young people and exposing them to an immersive educational experience. The exhibit, which houses a 30-seat movie theater with a 180-degree screen, travels to air shows, schools, youth gatherings and malls where visitors can sit in climate-controlled comfort to enjoy an experience documentary about the Tuskegee Airmen created by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Adam White. The experience is free to AIRSHO audiences!

AIRSHO is also excited to continue in its recent tradition of working to support the local economy. AIRSHO ticket prices will remain at the same low price as the last two years and we have once again invited local food vendors to participate in this year’s show! Ticket prices for the 2011 AIRSHO are just $15 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 to 12, Kids 5 and under are Free. Adult tickets will be $20 if purchased at the gate, but tickets for children ages 6 to 12 will remain only $5!

“In 2009, we “took a step back in time” and lowered ticket prices to make attending AIRSHO easier on families, and in 2010, the local food vendors enjoyed long lines and happy customers at AIRSHO,” said CAF President/CEO Stephan Brown. “The crowds enjoyed the unique variety of food available at AIRSHO, from fun fried foods to fantastic sandwiches. Inviting local food vendors back keeps the money in our hometown and keeping lower ticket prices makes the AIRSHO more accessible to our community.”
Discount tickets are on sale now at area Western National Bank branches, FINA 7-Eleven and Domino’s Pizza. Tickets are also available at www.airsho.org and at the Commemorative Air Force Headquarters at Midland International Airport.

On Saturday, Oct. 8 and Sunday, Oct. 9, the CAF AIRSHO gates will open to the public at 8:30 a.m. to give attendees plenty of time to view the static aircraft before the flying begins. CAF AIRSHO takes great pride in bringing the historic warbirds of the CAF fleet along with modern military aircraft to the public.

Collecting, restoring and flying vintage historical aircraft for more than half a century, the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) ranks as one of the largest private air forces in the world. The CAF is dedicated to Honoring American Military Aviation through flight, exhibition and remembrance. A non-profit educational association, the CAF has more than 8,000 members and a fleet of 156 airplanes distributed throughout the country to 74 units located in 27 states for care and operation.

Electric helicopter flight achieved - September 8, 2011 by Alton K. The flight lasted a little more than two minutes and achieved a height of three feet. The battery technology just isn’t there yet to make electric helicopter flight practical. It was designed, built, and flown by French enginer Pascal Cretien, who was sponsored by a French company, Solution F. 2011 CIAS Review by www.AirShowsReview.com

Mother Nature hasn’t cooperated much when it comes to the annual Canadian International Air Show lately. The weather was a deciding factor this year too when it came to flying. But despite the hazy, overcast and foggy skies that varied over the air show days, so did the temperatures from hot (close to 40C with humidity factored in) and very humid, to windy and almost chilly (15C on Monday). The three day air show found satisfaction in the hearts of the enthusiasts who were present.

There were several highlights this year at the CIAS. By far, with its first time visit to Canada, the MV-22B Osprey from the US Marines Corps was the pinnacle. This was followed by the A-10 West Demo Team of the USAF from Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona, and the Heavy Metal Jet Team, who were in Toronto for the first time too. Maj. General Stephen L. Hoog, USAF, Commander, 9th Air Force, Air Combat Command, Shaw AFB, S.C., was present on Sunday.

From the Canadian Forces, the Royal Canadian Navy’s HMCS Shawinigan participated in some fast maneuvering to thrill the crowds, and the Royal Canadian Air Force’s CF-18 Demo Team as well as the Snowbirds showed off their wings, weather permitting. On Saturday due to severe storms and lightning, the Snowbirds were unable to take off from Pearson International airport. The much anticipated Skyhawks parachute team cancelled their jump for the event too, but the crowds were compensated by several fly-bys by the CP-140 Aurora.

There were several civilian performers. Among them: Mike Wiskus, Pete McLeod, and Rick Volker, as well as the Air Cadets. The historical Lancaster bomber from Hamilton made an appearance during the air show.

CIAS is a waterfront air show as part of the Canadian National Exhibition, and technically it is a free event, even if you do not buy tickets to the Ex, as one can see the air show from the parks along the lakeshore of Ontario. There are no static displays available for the general public. For photography, the lighting condition is very far from ideal. You are shooting into the sun all day if there is sunlight, so in essence, a cloudy day or days are preferable for photographers.

Over all the show was good, and seemed to be better organized than in the past several years. I would like to thank Colleen Swider, Manager of Public Affairs and Media Relations, and her staff for their hospitality.

Space and Aviation Heroes to Share Their Adventures with Local Kids

Caldwell Industrial Airport, ID – A veritable Who’s Who of aviation’s finest will be on hand June 24th to deliver an exciting presentation to local young people. Astronaut and Idaho Educator Barbara Morgan will headline a distinguished panel of space and aviation heroes in this, the first Idaho Mission: Aerospace event. Morgan will be joined by A-10 West demonstration pilot Joe “Rifle” Shetterly, Idaho airshow pilot Greg Poe, and members of the Idaho Division of Aeronautics.

The event is being presented by the Ryan J. Poe Foundation, and is being held in conjunction with the Celebration of Flight airshow, which takes place at the Caldwell Industrial Airport the following day.

“We hope that this will become an annual event, with other activities fostering aviation and aerospace interest coming throughout the year,” said Mark Peterson, principal organizer for the event. “We’ve assembled a panel of some of the nation’s finest aviators with some great experiences to share, and hopefully that will spark an interest in the kids that will grow into a passion like it has for us.”

The panel will be sharing their experiences and adventures in aeronautics from their various careers though dynamic video and multimedia presentations, followed by question and answer sessions with each speaker. The attendees will be able to meet the speakers and the pilots from the airshow in a special session. Another highlight of the event will be an up close tour of the aircraft performing in the airshow, including the A-10 Thunderbolt II. They with their pilots and the speakers will be available for autographs and photo opportunities. Model rocketry and other displays are also expected.

Airshow pilot Greg Poe, founder of the Ryan J. Poe Foundation, said, “This is an opportunity for the kids to come out and see how exciting aviation can be, and see how Ms. Morgan and the rest of the presenters have made our dreams into a fulfilling way of life.” Poe visits thousands of kids each year through his Elevate Your Life program, which he will be presenting at this event.

Idaho Mission: Aerospace is a cooperative effort to bring aviation and aerospace learning resources to Idaho’s school age children. The goal is to open the door to careers in these and related fields by providing inspirational and educational events that allow kids and their families to explore the wonders of flight.

The event is being held at 9:00 AM on the Caldwell Industrial Airport at the Greg Poe Aviation Hangar, 518 Dishman Pl., Caldwell, ID 83605. Persons interested in more information should call (208) 455-0700 or visit www.ryanjpoe.org.

Scott AFB 2010 Air Show Review

Reviewed by Laszlo Nyary for http://www.airshowsreview.com/

Scott AFB, Illinois sept 11-12, 2010
Location: Scott Air Force Base, located by Shiloh, approx. 19 miles east of St. Louis.
Admission: Free
Parking: Free
Value: Excellent

The Scott AFB Air Show, located just east of St. Louis, in Illinois, for 2010 featured the Blue Angels as the main event for the air show. This was our second much anticipated visit to Scott AFB and we hoped that this year the weather would cooperate, giving all the spectators a chance to be dazzled by all the performers.
We arrived on Friday, usually the media and practice day for the performers. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate and it was a washout, and due to the rain and inclement weather, some of the aircraft flew in late or decided to wait until Saturday morning, when the weather was anticipated to improve.
Due to the 9/11 Anniversary there was heightened security on the AFB on Saturday. The gates opened on time at 9:00 a.m., although the forecast called for 80% chance of rain, it never materialized. The start of the air show was delayed due to low ceiling by about 30 minutes. It started with the 9/11 remembrance, led by Col. Michael Hornitschek, Commander of the 375th Airlift Wing at Scott AFB. The sun broke through the dark clouds in the early afternoon, which helped a great deal, to make the air show a memorable one for everyone, especially for the A-10 West Demo Team. After their Heritage Flight, as the A-10 landed, it blew the tires on the main landing gear. Luckily, only the main landing wheels and the tires required replacement. However, the A-10 required a tow from the runway, which interferred with the performance of the Blue Angels, as they had to use a different runway away from the spectators. There were no readily available replacement wheels or tires at the base and they had to be flown in for the A-10. Thus, Saturday ended with a bit of drama, but the main thing, no one got hurt. The highlite of the day for many was the B-2 fly-by. The B-2 made several relatively low passes which thrilled everyone!

Sunday, as far as the weather, it was perfect for the air show. However, bad luck continued for the A-10 West Demo Team. The replacement wheels and tires would only arrive at 2 p.m., and as the spare A-10 was prepared for the air show, due to an extreme family medical emergency the pilot who flew the plane to the show, had to fly it back to Davis-Monthan AFB, in Tucson, Arizona. Thus, not even the spare A-10 was available for the show. Therefore, only two aircraft performed the Heritage Flight: the F-16 of the Viper East Demo Team, and the F-4 Phantom. The Viper East Demo, piloted by Capt. Ryan "Rider" Corrigan performed splendidly as he demonstrated just how tight the F-16 can turn and how fast it can climb. The Tora Tora Tora, performed their routines and it was fun to watch them fly through the black smoke of simulated bombing runs. The show ended with the Blue Angels who were able to take off in front of the cheering crowds this time.

Over all, for the 150,000 spectators over the weekend, the air show was a great success. There were a few glitches for some of the performers and on Saturday there were some 'lines' at some of the sanitation facilities, but this was corrected for Sunday. There were plenty of trash bins and they were well dispersed. There were sufficient food and refreshment vendors, but they were a bit on the expensive side. The static display was a bit smaller than last year but still it had a good variety of aircraft; FedEx Airbus 300, C-5 Galaxy, F/A-18 painted in the aggressor colours, several other cargo, transport and training aircraft from the past and present.
The layout of the show provided a good vantage point to the flight line, and with the sun behind the spectators most of the day, excellent photographic opportunities, as long as the spectators had good telephoto lens, 400mm and upward for the fly-bys. A wide angle lens was mandatory for the larger jets at the static display.

This may be the last annual air show at Scott AFB, due to the economic climate of recent, it may change to a bi-annual event. Let us hope that will not be the case! Going to Scott AFB, for the general public, especially for families, it is an excellent value and a great, safe place to visit and have fun.

For us going to Scott AFB, it is like visiting our best friends or close family! We noticed and complemented, the friendliness of the Scott AFB personnel last year, and while some of the staff from last year changed, the friendliness and hospitality remained unchanged. In fact, we found the Public Affairs led by Karen Petitt, the Chief of the 375th Airlift Wing Public Affairs, and her team members such as Lt. Dan Riley, and TSgt. Jerome Baysmoreher, outstanding, and simply the BEST! We also had the opportunity to meet Lt. Col. Michael Kayser, the Air Show Director, and Col. Michael Hornitschek, the 375th Airlift Wing Commander, with whom we had a chance to discuss the air show and air shows in general. We wish to thank all of them for making the weekend such a positive and memorable event!

We stated so many times in our reviews, it is not just the performers who make an air show great, it is the people behind the organization and their staff; how they interact with the visitors and make them feel welcome and listen to their needs. Many air shows miss this point entirely. In our opinion, Scott AFB air show, is one that we would highly recommend for people who are interested in visiting a great air show, not just from Illinois or Missouri, but from all the US States, Canada, and world wide.

Some of the Teams and warbirds participating were:
B-2 fly-by
Blue Angels
Tora, Tora, Tora
The US ARMY Golden Knights Parachute Team
A-10 West Demo Team
F-16 East Coast Demo Team
C-17 Globemaster III

Recent Air Shows in Arizona by www.AirShowsReview.com

We had the opportunity visit recently two air shows in Arizona. The first one was at Davis-Monthan AFB. The second one was at MCAS Yuma. The shows differed vastly in size, performers and in quality of the actual show.

We will split the review into two parts: the first one will be about Davis-Monthan AFB. The second one will uploaded tomorrow.

Arizona Days: March 20-21
Location: Davis-Monthan AFB, Tucson, Arizona
Admission: FREE
Parking: Free on site and with shuttle buses $2.50 round trip
Value: Average

Featured performers included the Air Force Thunderbirds, the A-10 West Demonstration Team, F/A-18 Super Hornet Demo Team, and The Patriots.

Aerospace and Arizona Days 2010 Air Show in Tucson is held at Davis-Monthan AFB. The air show rotates bi-annually between Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson and Luke AFB, in Phoenix. It is a free event, thus it usually draws large crowds, and this year was no exception. Saturday’s attendees were somewhat larger than Sunday’s.

From the general public’s point of view, they discouraged on the base parking, suggested use of buses instead, and lacked a performer event schedule on their Internet site. One could buy one for $10.00 as part of Souvenir Program!!

On Saturday the event failed miserably with an inadequate supply of portable toilets, lining up for such was between 30-35 minutes, lacked adequate refreshment: namely water suppliers. Especially necessary, since this event was in the dry heat of Arizona where body moisture really evaporates quickly. I experienced an over 40 minute wait to buy a bottle of $3.00 water from a typical vendor, who was more interested selling tacos, and chicken pita wraps instead of refreshments and then wait another 5 minutes before they could find change to break a five dollar bill. While there were a couple of free water tanks dispersed from which one could draw lukewarm potable water, these tanks were not easy to locate and had major line ups too.

Portable toilets arriving on Sunday morning, a day late, but better than never!

If one didn’t want to stand or sit on concrete, (as bring your own folding chairs, or blankets for sitting were not permitted at the show) one could rent white a plastic folding chair for $5.00 interesting enough these were pushed by Air Force Reserve cadets, and were more visible than drinking water! I met many attendees ranging from nurses, to retired couples who felt that the show organizers were a bit disorganized, considering that it was hosted by the Air Force, one expected much better, and they can do better!

Scott AFB is a prime example, just how to organize and run such an event on an AFB. There were only few parts of the over all show experience that went very smoothly namely; entering and leaving from the on base parking, and going through security. These were handled very professionally and quickly.

As for the air show itself, it was quite good. The major issue for attendees including myself who takes photographs, that the sun was always in our eyes. Taking photos in such conditions is not easy, and back light compensation is required. Speaking of the sun, the weather was very good, it wasn’t windy, nor extremely hot, although heavy usage of sun block is highly recommended, unless one wants to stay in covered seating areas. Since there was no program schedule available unless one was prepared to pay $0.00 for one, while it was announced at the beginning of the show, if one came later, those people and with the majority of attendees had no idea when and who would perform, which made time management a bit difficult. Due to this I missed several performers as I was either lining up for bottle of water or for the potable facilities, and I wasn’t the only one of the many thousands who attended.

The main headliners were the Thunderbirds, Navy’s F/A Super Hornet Team and the West Coast A-10 Demo Team. The A-10 West Coast Demo Team is headquartered out of D-M AFB, so it was home turf for them. There were some interesting demo simulation of a pilot rescue and Border Patrol take-down. There was a simulated air-to-air refuelling demo with a C-130 and UH-60 Black Hawk Helicopter. Other civilian performers included the Patriots with their four L-39C. The USAF Heritage Flight with the A-10 and with a Vietnam era Skyraider, and a fly-by of a B-17 bomber with a P-51D Mustang. There were a large static display at the show, the larger aircraft such as the B-1B Lancer, C-130 Hercules variants, KC-135 Stratotanker, were parked on the tarmac, while the smaller fighter, trainers and similar aircraft were in covered (open at both ends) hangars.

The air show part thrilled the crowds, as the Super Hornet Demo Team, the A-10 Demo Team, and the Thunderbirds put on an excellent show. The Heritage Flight was good too. The general show announcement lacked clarity (this does not apply to Demo Teams who have there own announcers) as to where to look for the inbound aircraft.

My own over all impression of the air show had very mixed feelings. For me, who attends several air shows in a year, it seemed that the organizers didn’t really want an air show because it lacked concise communication on their web site, the PAO made it extremely difficult to coordinate media coverage (blamed on e-mail failure), lacked enthusiasm for coverage, restricted movements further than the general public were given, and the list just goes on but that is another story which I am not going publicize.

I do wish to thank the people who did make my visit worthwhile despite needless difficulties: PAO Capt. Jason McRee of the Thunderbirds, Capt. Joe “Riffle” Shetterly and TSGT Tommy Napier both of the A-10 Demo Team, and Karen Petitt, Chief PAO, Scott AFB, without your help and understanding the 2730 mile one way drive would have been a disaster! You are simply the BEST!

Some of the participating performers were:

U-2 Dragon Lady flyby
The Thunderbirds
F-18 Super Hornet
A-10 West Demo Team
Pilot Rescue Demo with A-10 and UH-60 Black Hawk Helicopter Team
Border Patrol take-down demo
Heritage Flight with A-10 and Skyraider
B-17 with a P-51D Mustang flyby
Patriots L-39C Team
and many others including static displays.

Rating: The over all rating as air shows go in general is 6 out of 10, (due to several issues) and reflects much needed improvement in several key areas as listed above.
