Cancelled: The Navy's SeaMaster - Air & Space Smithsonian | The Navy wanted a nuclear bomber of its own; the Glenn Martin Company thought, Why not a flying boat? | In the early days of the cold war, the U.S. Navy was feeling left out. The future was nuclear, and the Air Force’s Strategic Air Command seemed to have a lock on the delivery systems. The Navy’s first bid for a piece of the strategic pie, the supercarrier USS United States, was killed by the Pentagon in favor of the Air Force’s B-36 bomber, so the admirals came up with a plan for a force of nuclear-armed seaplanes....

Navy Blue Angels fly into era of budget questions - AP | PENSACOLA NAVAL AIR STATION, Fla. (AP) — The Navy's Blue Angels have been thrilling audiences for more than six decades with their acrobatic flying in fighter planes, but a new era of federal budget worries and proposed deficit cutting has some inside and outside the military raising questions about the millions it costs to produce their shows. Some want the popular shows grounded and some readers of the Air Force Times newspaper — most of them active or retired service members — recently listed eliminating the Blue Angels and similar programs as one way to cut defense spending. The Pentagon spends $37 million for the Blue Angels, whose mission is to enhance recruiting for...

Review by http://www.airshowsreview.com/
Admission: Free -- see report about this.
Parking: Free
Value: Excellent

For most performances a lens with a 200-400mm range worked well. Even with such limited performances it was possible to take a few interesting images.
The media pit was adequate. Media treatment was good and well organized. There were no media flights offered.
Food service was plentiful and not overly expensive. Sanitation facilities were adequate.
NAS Oceana air show is a perfect venue to bring the entire family, with many attractions for kids. For those who want to have a place to seat and eat can get special VIP tickets or just tickets for the bleachers.
Warbirds that were airborne were:
- Blue Angels F-18 Hornet

The Age of Very Light Jets from Wayne Farley's Aviation Blog by Wayne Farley | The age of very-light jets (VLJ) is upon us. You can call them microjets, entry-level jets or very light personal jets; but these aircraft are small, single-pilot operated and designed to seat 4-8 people, with a maximum take-off weight of under 10,000 pounds. They are lighter than what is commonly termed business jets, and can operate into smaller airports with 3000 feet runways. As an aviation professional and an artist, I'm intrigued by these lean, aesthetically crafted machines which sometimes look like they are from another world. With the exception of the Embraer Phenom and the Piper Jet which were already featured, here's a list of VLJs that may show up at your airport one day…

Recent Air Shows in Arizona (part 2) by www.AirShowsReview.com
Location: Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, ArizonaAdmission: FREE
Parking: Free on site
Value: Excellent

Featured performers included the F-16 Viper West Demo Team, AV-8B Harrier Demo Team and The Patriots.
MCAS Yuma Air Show is held at the Marine Air Station which shares the grounds with the Yuma International Airport. The 2010 MCAS Yuma Air Show, in Arizona was only a one day affair. The show took place on March 27, exactly a week later of the Aerospace and Arizona Days 2010 Air Show in Tucson that was held at Davis-Monthan AFB. While the MCAS Yuma Air Show was smaller in scale than the D-M AFB, it was better organized, was much friendlier with helpful staff, especially from the Public Affairs Office, and just as importantly it had a Schedule of Events that was fairly accurate! The weather was typical Arizona weather in March, mid 80’s, sunny, although the wind was quite gusty at times.
The show itself was a bit short on top performers; the F-16 Viper West Coast Demo Team was one and if we count the Marines AV-8B Harrier as an official team, which may not be, who were based out of Yuma, they would be the second. There was one aerial refueling pass with a Hercules Tanker and an AV-8B Harrier, which would have been more interesting if the demo would have been a bit longer, say one pass each way or even several passes in each direction! The Heritage flight consisted of the F-16 and a F-4, too bad the F-4 Phantom was a fly-in guest and it did not land or was on static display at the show itself! There were a couple of civilian performers like the Patriot Jet Team, great performers flying very low with tight turns, Paul Stender’s Jet Outhouse and Jet School bus that raced with the T-33 “Ace Maker”; the T-33 won! There was an R/C demonstration too and a couple of Pitts S-2 who did some aerobatics in between the above performers. Over all the performances were good, especially the Marines AV-8B Harrier demo, and the Patriots with some very low level flying, who stood out overall. Static displays included: several F-5 painted in aggressor’s colors, F/A-18 Hornet, F/A-18 Super Hornet, several A-10s, a B-52 bomber, and a KC-135 Tanker, a Polish built PZL TS-11 Iskra (Spark) jet trainer from the mid-sixties, and several AFV’s from the Yuma Testing Grounds.
Yuma is one of those rare shows were the sun is behind the lens most of the time, thus making photography of performers a breeze, with good results as long as the focal length of the lens is in the 300-400mm range. There was a children’s play area, and there were plenty of concession stands with typical fast foods available at such venues. There were plenty of portable toilets and were well dispersed. Parking and Security were handled very professionally and quickly. As for show announcement, I cannot comment on it, as I was in the old control tower above the crowds and static display area, which gave an excellent view of the flight line but away from the loudspeakers, and it was a bit windy thus I was not able to hear the loudspeakers, but since there was a schedule, it was easy to follow the performers. Approxinately 20, 000 people attended the air show.
This was my first visit to the Marine Air Station Yuma, and I was very much impressed by their professionalism, and I wish to thank the PAO staff, especially Gunnery Sgt. Lisbon, Lance Corporal Benson, and Lance Corporal Diamant for their hospitality and cooperation, and Capt. Dolan who spoke with our Coordinator at The Magazine.
Some of the participating performers were:
F-16 Viper West Demo Team
Marines AV-8B Harrier
SAR Helicopter Demo
Heritage Flight with F-16 and F4 Phantom
Patriots L-39C Team
T-33 Ace Maker
and many others including static displays.
Rating: over all rating when taking everything into consideration was an excellent 9 out of 10. I highly recommend the MCAS Yuma air show to all! Go Marines!

The Viper West Team led by Maj. David Graham.

Greater Binghamton Air Show, New York, July 4-5, 2009

Location: Binghamton Regional Airport, Johnson City, New York
Admission: Adult $15, Child $10
Parking: $4.00 off site, transfer by bus
Value: Excellent

Traditionally, Binghamton is not one of the larger air shows in the USA, but one of the better ones in the Norhteast. For this year the Blue Angels, the US Navy’s premier flight demonstration team, in my opinion the best in the USA, were the major headliners.
Even before I got to the Binghamton Air Show, it had an aura that this will be a well organized show. First impressions do count a great deal, as I received my media pass, complete with parking pass, map as how to get to the airport and layout of the air show about a week prior to the start of the air show. This indicated to me that the folks at the Binghamton airport were on the ball. This was refreshing from the previous air show I attended in New York State, where I had to run around in a strange city, without much direction as to where exactly and who to see to receive my pass.
I arrived on Thursday, and saw a small glimpse of the Blue Angels as they were practicing some of their maneuvers. On Friday I wanted to go and see the arriving aircraft, but the weather was far from ideal until about 4 pm, with sudden showers on and off erratically. By the time I got to the airport, most had arrived. To my surprise I did not see any other photographers from the media or otherwise after 4 pm. They are usually hanging around at such events. I asked the operation supervisor of the airport if I could get in to take some static photos, and I was let in, and driven out to the tarmac. About one hour later I was picked up. I appreciated the help; thank you Tom!
The flight line layout at Binghamton is a bit different, see the layout above, than at most air show, perhaps due to the fact that it is an operational airport, on both days there were some slight delays in the event to allow for the regional airliners to land and to take off as per their schedule. This was not an inconvenience, as it gave the crowds time to visit the concession stands or visit the facilities, which were plenty. The refreshments were quite steep, $3.00 for a bottle of water is a bit much folks!
Featured teams besides the USN Blue Angels, were the USAF F-16 West Coast Team, US Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, the USMC AV-8B Harrier II Demo Team. All of them put on a great demonstration of their capabilities. Fat Albert of the Blue Angels demonstrated the JATO take off, which was great, but the view was partially blocked by the static two F-16 and the two Harriers parked in front of the flight line! There was an A-10 Thunderbolt II fly-by too.

There were a lack of WWII Warbirds, essentially there were only three: B-17 "Memphis Belle" (replica), a C-47 both of these from Geneseo, NY, and a B-25 “Briefing Time” from Reading, PA. Only the B-25 flew a short routine on both days. The vintage T-33 Thunderbird was a no show. There were civilian performers, including World Champion Rob Holland. Rob Holland dazzled the crowds with his excellent flying several times on both days! What a performer!!
The weather on Saturday was a bit chilly, with heavy dark clouds to sunny breaks and every variation in between. However, the clouds gave a dramatic backdrop for taking photos of the performing aircraft. On Sunday it was much better and mostly sunny.
My over all expression of the show was very good and well organized. The only consideration for improvement apart from more WWII warbirds: many volunteers applied to receive tickets for their children “as working volunteers” and some were running around on the flight line side of the fence bumping into media photographers or even blocking them from taking proper photos. I believe that children should not be able to do this and there should be an age limit for the volunteers.
I would recommend the Binghamton Air show as an excellent entertainment for the whole family and well worth visiting next year!
