The Age of Very Light Jets from Wayne Farley's Aviation Blog by Wayne Farley | The age of very-light jets (VLJ) is upon us. You can call them microjets, entry-level jets or very light personal jets; but these aircraft are small, single-pilot operated and designed to seat 4-8 people, with a maximum take-off weight of under 10,000 pounds. They are lighter than what is commonly termed business jets, and can operate into smaller airports with 3000 feet runways. As an aviation professional and an artist, I'm intrigued by these lean, aesthetically crafted machines which sometimes look like they are from another world. With the exception of the Embraer Phenom and the Piper Jet which were already featured, here's a list of VLJs that may show up at your airport one day…

Aviation Trivia of the Day by JP Santiago - 1981: "I'M AN ACKER BACKER" pins are on everyone's lapels.
1985: "I'M AN ACKER BACKER" pins are in everyone's trashcans. For years labor negotiations at Pan Am were always cordial and easily managed by both managers and union representatives who both passionate about the near-imperial status of their airline. Labor strife? That's below us. Strikes? That's below us here an Pan Am, too. Usually new labor agreements were hammered out at some local bar down the street from Pan Am's landmark New York City headquarters building. But that changed from 1981. Was it the airline's new chairman, smooth talking Texan C. Edward Acker? Was it the infusion of the employees of National Airlines in 1979? Was it deregulation?...

Sun 'n Fun 2010 Highlights from Aviation Social Media | DaveFlys by David | Another Sun 'n Fun Fly-In is behind us. Most of my week was spent at Sun 'n Fun Radio performing my duties as Editor-In-Chief. We really stepped things up at the radio station this year. Admittedly, we bit off more than we should have. The listeners were probably oblivious (at least I hope so), but those of us that were working behind the scenes to make it all happen were constantly busy. Too busy. It left many of us, myself included, overly stressed. In spite of that, we accomplished some pretty awesome stuff, like live internet streaming of the radio station thanks to our friends at LiveATC.net…

Gold Demonstration Team CRW Training from armygoldenknights's | Gold Demonstration Team conducts canopy relative work(CRW) at our training facility in Laurinburg, NC. In this video, Team members practice the tri-by-side. A difficult maneuver as the jumpers are linked together with straps. The jumpers start this by first docking one on top of the other, in a 3 stack. Then each jumper manuevers to be side by side. While side by side they snap into a link on each of the harnesses. These straps are used to relieve the tension on the jumpers arms as they try to navigate side by side…

FAA Kills "Taxi To" For Takeoff from ExpressJet Forum by MikeW | Effective June 30, 2010, the FAA is deleting the term "taxi to" from taxi and ground movement operations as it pertains to aircraft cleared to taxi to an assigned takeoff runway. The change requires controllers to issue explicit runway crossing clearances "for each runway (active/inactive or closed) crossing." And aircraft issued clearance to cross a runway must cross that runway before receiving clearance for a subsequent runway crossing. There is an exception: "At airports where the taxi route between runway centerlines is less than 1,000 feet apart, multiple runway crossings may be issued after receiving approval by the Terminal Services Director of Operations," according to the FAA…

Aviation Trivia of the Day by JP Santiago - In 1986, Southwest Airlines was only the 14th largest airline in the United States and had only 63 aircraft in its fleet. In fact, in terms of passengers carried, Southwest was less than one-tenth the size of United Airlines. But from the passage of the Airline Deregulation Act in 1978, Southwest had not only grown four-fold but had remained consistently profitable during the rocky early years of deregulation. But few Americans at the time had heart of Southwest Airlines as it was still for the most part operating in Texas and the adjacent states. Despite its relative obscurity, though, the business world from academia to other industries took a close look at Southwest trying to divine the secret to its success. Perhaps Robert Crandall, the iconic head of American Airlines, Southwest's main competition in the Dallas/Fort Worth market, said it best when he said "That place runs on Herb Kelleher's bullshit."

Cervia, 16-17.04.10 – Con la Diana sul Petto from David Cenciotti's weblog - the most visited Italian Aviation Blog by David Cenciotti | "Con la Diana sul Petto" is the name of the event that the 5° Stormo organised in Cervia airbase to give farewell to the F-16. The locally-based 23° Gruppo is in fact about to release its remaining "Vipers" to the 18° Gruppo based in Trapani, that will be the last Italian squadron to fly with the F-16, while Cervia will probably host the HH-3F of the 15° Stormo. To celebrate the event, a special colour and a special tail were prepared and displayed in a sort of mini-airshow that was scheduled to take place both on April 16 and 17, 2010. On the first day, a training display by the Frecce Tricolori was also scheduled but the 9 MB.339s did not perform their practice display because of the bad weather, while, on Apr. 17, the entire flying activity was cancelled because of the volcanic ash that interested the Northern Italian airspace…

Landing Gear Scare Aboard Vintage Plane - A vintage World War II bomber circled the Hillsboro airport for about 50 minutes Sunday, after an alert about a landing gear problem. Nine people were reportedly aboard the "Liberty Belle" when the alert was first called at about noon Sunday. The plane ultimately landed safely, but had to circle the airport while those ground crews did their work…

Ballooning over Barcelona from A mile of runway will take you anywhere. by Steve | This certainly ranks up there with the most awesome things I've had the opportunity to do in the sky. Aviation Trivia of the Day by JP Santiago - One of the toughest targets in North Vietnam during the long war there was the Thanh Hoa Bridge over the Song Ma River. The bridge was a massive steel truss and concrete structure that carried a railroad down the center and a two lane road way on each side and was a major supply choke point from Hanoi and the harbor of Haiphong. Crossing the river at its narrowest point, sharp limestone ridges on each side gave it the nickname Ham Rong, or "Dragon's Jaw" as the American pilots referred to it. Because of its strategic nature on the supply route to the battlefields along the DMZ and to the Viet Cong in South Vietnam, the Thanh Hoa Bridge was a significant target and was recognized as such by the North Vietnamese who protected the area with some of the densest antiaircraft defenses outside of Hanoi and Haiphong…
