Wings over Wayne Airshow: Seymour Johnson AFB Open House, April 16-17, 2011

WOW! What an event, as in many ways it felt like being on a roller coaster ride! Several highs and lows, mostly due to weather! Friday’s media day was sunny with pleasant temperatures, Saturday it was overcast, very windy, and quite cold, then the show was cancelled, then rain, thunder, and tornados in the area followed by Sunday’s bright blue skies and pleasant temperatures. The AFB did a great job, with their safety first attitude!

Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is the home of the 4th Fighter Wing. The 4th Fighter Wing is a direct descendant of the World War II 4th Fighter Group, the United States Army Air Force VIII Fighter Command unit formed from the members of the Royal Air Force Eagle Squadrons. The fighter squadrons of the Royal Air Force were formed prior to the United States entry into World War II with volunteer pilots from the United States.

The wing consists of four squadrons of F-15E Strike Eagles:
333rd Fighter Squadron Lancers "Red Fin Flash"
334th Fighter Squadron Eagles "Blue Fin Flash"
335th Fighter Squadron Chiefs "Green Fin Flash"
336th Fighter Squadron Rocketeers "Yellow Fin Flash"

SJ AFB is also home to the F-15E Strike Eagle Demo Team. One of the favorite teams of this reviewer due to the F-15E's capabilities apart from the dual-role fighter designed to perform air-to-air and air-to-ground missions; it is large, fast and loud! Thrilling to watch if one likes fast jets.

The two day event usually draws large crowds, but due to Saturday’s inclement weather, the organizers announced a briefer schedule with many acts that were moved up. Four F-15’s in formation roared across the sky as the National Anthem was song followed by the Golden Knights, but it became quickly obvious that the high winds would jeopardize the safety of the flyers as well as the public and Saturday’s event was cancelled at 11:30 a.m. It was a good call as a tornado touched down just near the AFB later on.

Sunday’s event was excellent, and according to the announcer, with “record breaking crowds.” The spectators were thrilled by many acts such as the Sky Soldiers AH-1G Cobra helicopters, Tora, Tora, Tora from the Commemorative Air Force WWII re-enactment of the 1942 Pearl Harbor attack, A-10 East Demo Team, F-4 Phantom East Demo, the Strike Eagle Team, and the ACC Heritage Flight with several civilian performers. Interestingly enough, Jacquie Warda and her beautiful Red Eagle Pitts S-1T Biplane while present, was not on the performers’ list, and many could not understand why she was not a performer and only as static? A feeling shared by Jacquie, when I asked her. There was a special ceremony honoring the Tuskegee Airmen during both days. The closing flying act was the awesome performance of the Thunderbirds! There were several civilian aircraft, WWI and WWII and modern warbirds on display including: the B-17F Memphis Belle, Hawker Hurricane, P-40 Warhawk, and the F-22 Raptor. There was a large Kid’s Zone, Flight simulator, several demonstrations such as the military working dog demo, and even some hot cars. Sunday concluded with a free concert by country star Tracy Lawrence.

There were plenty of food and refreshment vendors at typical pricing, water or soda at $3.00 each, burgers $6.00, etc. Portable sanitary facilities were grouped in three areas, which required considerable time to reach for the spectators near the flight line. For the future, dispersing them in more areas would be more suitable.

Over all, it was a great air show to attend, despite the weather situation. I wish to thank all who helped our team of photographers and for their warm hospitality, especially thanks to: Robin DeMark ACC 4 FW/PA, TSgt Tammie Moore ACC 4 FW/PA, and their wonderfully helpful staff; Major Mike "CASH" Maeder, Captain Steven "BUDA" Bofferding, Master Sgt. Michael E. Pate of the F-15E Strike Eagle Team; Major Dylan “HABU” Thorpe and his A-10 Team. You, are all great examples of the professionalism of the USAF!

Aviation Film Festival postponed by Hall of Fame - Press Release
Group works with new partner on fall date for Reel Stuff Film Festival of Aviation
(Feb. 9, 2010 – Dayton, Ohio) The National Aviation Hall of Fame will not hold the 2010 Reel Stuff Film Festival of Aviation during its originally scheduled Feb. 26-28 dates, but officials are working out details of a partnership with a local arts group to produce the event this fall.
"With the loss of a major sponsor and the reorganization of the Hall of Fame operations in 2009, we simply could not make the February date," said Alan Hoeweler, chairman of the Hall of Fame's board of trustees. "But Southwest Ohio has a vibrant creative community, and we believe that working with one of these organizations and signing on some new sponsors will help make a great event even better."
The board is in discussions with a Dayton-based nonprofit group that expressed its interest in producing the festival while keeping the Hall as the beneficiary. Board members declined to identify the organization until further details of funding and operation of the festival are settled.
In November, the Hall of Fame underwent a reorganization that included staff reductions and other cost-cutting measures. Kaplan, the Hall of Fame's former executive director, was hired in January to act as a consultant to help the board coordinate the organization's 2010 enshrinement weekend activities, set for July 16-17.
While Kaplan will focus his attention on the enshrinement, he said the Reel Stuff Film Festival is another event that can help showcase not only the area's unparalleled aviation heritage, but the arts and business communities of the greater Dayton area.
Kaplan, the founding director of the Reel Stuff festival, added that he hopes the film festival can make a 2010 date, noting that the Hall again had a robust lineup of presenters eager to screen their feature films and documentaries this year.
"This event has been second only to our annual enshrinement ceremonies in nationally spotlighting the Hall of Fame," Kaplan said. "For anyone with a passion for flight and the filmmaking process, Reel Stuff makes the 'Birthplace of Aviation' the place to be."
Past attendees of the Reel Stuff Film Festival include Academy Award-winning actor, pilot and enshrinee Cliff Robertson; aerial photographer Clay Lacy (who is set to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame in July); Catherine Wyler, producer of "Memphis Belle" in 1990 and daughter of William Wyler, director of the 1944 documentary, "The Memphis Belle: The Story of a B-17." The 2009 festival also included the North American premiere of "Der Rote Baron," (The Red Baron), a German production of the life of Baron von Richthofen that has its national release next month.
"In just two years, this festival has become the top aviation film festival in the country," Hoeweler said. "We've set a high standard, and have every intention of raising that bar even higher. The postponement will be worth the wait and a "win-win" for the Hall of Fame, the Festival and the region."

The Reel Stuff Film Festival of Aviation, which had been at risk of not happening this year for lack of corporate funding support, may yet take place this fall if the National Aviation Hall of Fame can work out a partnership with a local arts organization and find local funding support, a primary organizer of the prior festivals said Tuesday, Feb. 9.
Ron Kaplan, the aviation hall's former executive director now serving the nonprofit organization as a consultant, said he could not identify the arts organization or potential funding sources until agreements can be worked out, perhaps within the next few weeks. The aviation hall laid off Kaplan in November because of a tight budget, but brought him back in January as a consultant, primarily to organize the hall's annual July emshrinement of pioneering aviation figures.

2009 NAS Oceana Air Show Review

The Oceana NAS air show 2009, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, looked promising, but like most air shows this year we have attended, the weather was again, the spoiling factor! Historically, Oceana NAS is a very large air show with an excellent reputation and in 2009, would be our first visit.

This year’s main attractions included: The Blue Angels, The Snowbirds, F-15E Strike Eagle, the The Red Devils, the elite British Army Parachute Team, who are similar to the U.S. Army’s Golden Knights, Air-to-air in flight refueling demo, Fleet flyby, and the list just goes on!

On Friday, Oct. 9 th - Media day, the skies were heavily overcast and drizzling all day, with no action in the air whatsoever due to the low ceiling only the Shockwave Jet Truck did a few trial runs and Rich Gibson's pyro were set off.

On Saturday, it was heavily over cast with brisk winds, which made the already cold air feel even worse. I’d come prepared though, with a winter jacket, hat and gloves, as these were required! The only good thing about Saturday, during the actual time of the air show, it did not rain. But, due to the low ceiling of the dark clouds, many of the scheduled performances were cancelled. However, the organizers tried to put some aircraft into the air such as the T-6G with Bill Leff in the cockpit, the P-51D Mustang with Dale “Snort” Snodgrass, Otto the Helicopter, F4U Corsair, F-15E Strike Eagle, F/A-18 Hornet, F/A-18F Super Hornet, and The Blue Angels performed with a low level variations of their normal routines. Performances with other multiple aircraft were all cancelled with exception of the Blue Angels. The pyro was set off with a wall of fire which warmed up the crowds for a couple of seconds. All of their performances were much appreciated by the crowds, approximately 25,000 who braved the bone chilling temperatures.

On Sunday, the weather had its day. It was heavily over cast again, but with even brisker winds, and as a bonus it was drizzling on and off, mostly on, unfortunately. Again the organizers tried to put performers into the air, for the braver and dedicated fans who arrived despite the foul weather. Our staff had enough of the bone chilling wet weather, and after seeing Bill Leff’s T-6G perform, and the weather’s forecast, we decided to leave the show.

There were plenty of vendors hawking air show paraphernalia. As for food vendors, they were expensive and the food to our group, was awful, worse than at most air shows. Sanitation facilities were plenty and well dispersed.

The layout of the show was excellent, and if someone was willing to pay for upgraded seats, or stands, it provided very good to excellent viewing of the flight line activities. The performances also included a race between the T-6G and a jet powered truck; the truck won. While there were some static aircraft on display, there were fewer than expected.

For most performances a lens with a 200-400mm range worked well. Even with such limited performances it was possible to take a few interesting images.

Over all the show was rated 7.0 out of 10, mainly due to the weather which prevented the majority of the performances. We’re hoping for next year, the weather will be much better!

Naval museum likely to claim bomber if it is raised - Union-Tribune Staff Writer
SAN DIEGO — Is a custody battle likely between two aviation museums for the rare Navy SB2C-4 Helldiver bomber that's been resting on the muddy bottom of Lower Otay Reservoir?
Probably not, said retired Capt. Bob Rasmussen, director of the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Fla.
Reached Friday at the museum, Rasmussen said it's "unlikely" that the San Diego Air & Space Museum will permanently keep the plane, which crashed in 1945 and remains buried in mud at the reservoir.
James Kidrick, president and chief executive of the San Diego museum in Balboa Park, said Friday that he would like to see the plane stay here.
Not happening, Rasmussen said.
"There are certain circumstances where it might be there for a while," Rasmussen said. "But fortunately, the Navy owns the plane. We may be able to arrange for it to be there (in San Diego) on loan for a while. But I told Jim that he'll get it when I'm 150 years old. The bottom line is this plane is rare, and this is the national aviation museum. It belongs here." ...

World War II: Little Boy = Big Devastation from About.com Military History
July 26, 1945 - USS Indianapolis delivers the "Little Boy" atomic bomb (left) to Tinian. Created during the super-secret Manhattan Project, Little Boy was the first atomic bomb produced by the United States. A "gun-type" atomic weapon, it required one piece of uranium-235 to be fired into another to create a nuclear chain reaction. Created by a team led by A. Francis Birch, Little Boy's design was not tested prior to construction due to a lack of uranium. While the bomb itself was built by May 1945, the uranium for its core was not available until July. Rushed to Tinian, it was assembled and ready for use by August 1. With the decision to employ Little Boy against Hiroshima, the bomb was loaded aboard the B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay. Attacking the city on August 6, the bomb performed as planned, destroying much of the city and killing between 70,000-80,000. Little Boy was followed three days later by the use of the plutonium-fueled "Fat Man" bomb on Nagasaki. Combined, the two bombs compelled Japan to bring World War II to a close.

Photos from recent NY State air shows: Binghamton and Geneseo

BINGHAMTON, NY. July 4-5, 2009

The Binghamton air show is one of those air shows that is worth the visit despite its relatively small size. This year by hosting the USN Blue Angels, USAF F-16 Viper West Demo, USMC AV-8B Harrier Demo, and the US Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, the teams made the air show a very special event. Other performers included Rob Holland MX2 Aerobatics, Carol Pilan wing walking demonstration among others, such as the WWII B-25 warbird, and the L-29 Delfin jet. There were only three WWII warbirds at the show: B-17 Memphis Belle, C-47 Skytrain and a B-25, and only one of them the B-25 flew during the show. Click here to see the images.



GENESEO, NY. July 10-12, 2009

Geneseo's 'Greatest Shown on Turf' is one of the classic air shows in the USA. 'Go Navy' was the theme for the 30th anniversary of the air show at this charming airport with a grass runway (turf). Enjoy the digital images that I took of the many US Navy WWII warbirds such as the Helldiver, Hellcat, Wildcat and Corsairs, in the air, on the ground and from air-to-air. There were other aircraft both Navy and Air Force from Canada such as the Canso PVY (Canadian built Catalina), Harvards and WWI replicas buzzing around. The USAF F-15E Strike Eagle Demo Team was present too, and they performed the Heritage Flight with a P-51D Mustang piloted by Dale 'Snort' Snodgrass. The grass field and the flight path for the air show provided excellent viewing and photographic opportunities in general if one got to the show early.

Geneseo Air Show, advertised as “The Greatest Show on Turf” is located just south of Rochester. The nearest major international gateway for Canadian visitors is at Buffalo, NY. From Buffalo, Geneseo is just southeast of Batavia, NY. This year’s theme was “Go Navy”, with several WWII Navy planes in attendance. On July 10th, Friday, the arrival day for the aircraft was sunny, and pleasant, and provided some good opportunity for photography. However, on Saturday, it was dark and overcast with 90% probability of thunderstorms and heavy rain. It started raining very heavily around 11:20 a.m., and the show was stopped. It continued to rain until about 2:15 p.m. and truly soaked the grounds as the weather once again interfered with the show, just like last year. The air show continued with some delays and cancellation of certain events for the remaining few diehards, due to condition of grass field which was very wet and soggy, and to avoid damaging the planes, if they got stuck in the mud. On Sunday the weather was excellent, as long as one was careful about the mud and the well soaked grass.

For this year there were some changes at the 1941 Historical Aircraft Group, which hosts and runs the air show. Changes for the better. The staff were friendly and helpful. The air show with slight adjustments can be improved to fully utilize the charm of Geneseo: the grass turf, out in the country, with no buildings in the background. Under certain conditions with the right aircraft it could be almost like a time-travel, going back to the WWI era, when the replica WWI warbirds take into the air. There were several food vendors, with the best Hamburgers from the 1941 HAG stand. The sanitation facilities were adequate, but some could have been located closer to the flight line.

The Navy theme worked quite well, as there were some rarely seen planes at Geneseo for this year: F6F Hellcat, SB2C Helldiver (the only one still flying), Canso also know as the PVY Catalina, (built in Canada), F4F Wildcat, TBM Avenger, (3) Corsairs, several T-6SNJ and Stearman, trainers all participating and not just static. Another major attraction was the F15E Strike Eagle Demonstration Team, which also flew with the P-51D Mustang in the Heritage Flight on both days, and on Sunday there was a Hercules cargo drop demonstration. Rob Holland dazzled the crowds with his amazing flying skills. All these acts put on a great performance! The Beech C-45, and Cessna T-50 Bobcat, were used as photoplanes for some of the photographers.

Over all, the Geneseo Air Show show provides very good entertainment for the dollar. Being a unique (grass landing field) makes this air show charming and worth attending. Keep up the good work folks!
