Fat Albert's JATO Demo Going Away from Milcom Monitoring Post by Larry
There's nothing like solid rocket fuel bursting into flames to get an air-show crowd's attention.
The jet-assisted takeoff, or JATO, is a fan favorite at the annual Oceana Air Show, which takes place this weekend. But this is the final year you'll be able to see it.
The maneuver is performed by Fat Albert, the Marine-crewed C-130 cargo plane that carries the Blue Angels' gear. At takeoff, the crew fires eight rocket "bottles" that blast the mammoth plane 1,000 feet into the air in about 15 seconds - simulating a launch under hostile conditions.
Trouble is, the bottles date to the Vietnam War, and it costs about $16,000 to get one reinspected and approved for use, said Capt. Edward Jorge, one of the plane's pilots. The expense has become prohibitive.
"We're going to be very sad," he said. "But ya know, all good things come to an end."

WWII B-17 crewman recalls POW experience from Air Force Times - News
KERNERSVILLE, N.C. — On Aug. 6, 1944, John Anderson was on a bombing mission near Berlin when German anti-aircraft fire hit his B-17. The plane went into a spin. For a time, the centrifugal force was so strong that Anderson couldn't move, much less make his way toward the door in the tail to escape. He thought he was a dead man.Instead, his fate was to become a prisoner of war.Today, Anderson is 86. 87-year-old pilot is back in the cockpit from Diamond Pilots
After decades of flying, the 87-year-old World War II pilot finally got recognition.

The plane took more of a beating than the pilot. On Monday, for the first time since the crash, he was back in the cockpit, flying a twin-engine 1977 Cessna Skymaster aircraft, his usual ride.
"It was time to get back in the saddle," he says. "I'm just glad to be back at it."

The 2009 Canadian International Air Show, Toronto

Canadian International Air Show at the CNE, Toronto 2009

Location: South of the Canadian National Exhibition grounds on the waterfront west of Ontario Place.

Admission: Included with the CNE admission, but can be viewed for free from the lake front shore line parks, in the "spectator" area, however, only two portable washrooms facilities provided in the free section.

Parking: At the CNE or directly at the lakeshore parks $25.00. While public transport (TTC) is available to the CNE, none exists to the free areas. 1/2 to 1 mile walk from and to public transit each way.

Value: Excellent if watched from the "Free Area", Very Good if included in the CNE admission, as longs as one doesn't have to pay for parking.

The air-box corridor for the air show, is on the waterfront. While it is safe for the spectators, but for viewing or for photographing the air show performers, it is far from ideal unless you have a zoom or telephoto lens in the 400mm and up range!

In the City of Toronto windows rattled, and the tall buildings echoed back the blast of the gun fire salutes from the HMCS Ville de Québec, frigate, and from the jets thundering over the skies during the Labour Day weekend. By far the 2009, The CNE – Canadian International Air Show, (CIAS) was the best air show in Toronto over the past decade, as it celebrated the 60 th Anniversary of the air show held in Toronto, and The 100 Years of Flight in Canada.

Even the weather cooperated this year with the three day event, giving tens of thousands of spectators from Toronto, southern Ontario and many from the USA, a great view of the visiting Blue Angels of the US Navy, the Horsemen, the F-16 Viper East Demo Team, the F-22 Raptor Demo Team, the WWII Spitfire, our own CF-18 with the Centennial Flight Demo and our Snowbirds. Civilian performers included Michael Goulian, one of the performing pilots from the Red Bull series of events, who just returned from winning the Red Bull air race at Budapest, and Mike Wiskus who also participated in the air show. The Air Cadets floated by in a glider while the Search and Rescue demo was performed by a CH-146 Griffon helicopter.

By far the best day was on Saturday, when the Canadian frigate the HMCS Ville de Qu ébec was anchored just south of the flight line just west of the show center. The HMCS Ville de Qu ébec, offered a very unique view of the air show with spectacular view of the City of Toronto as a background, to a lucky few invited quests. I want to thank LT (N) Alain Blondin of the Joint Task Force Atlantic Public Affairs (Maritime Ops) National Defence, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Captain Alexander Cadieux Public Affairs Officer 19 Wing Comox, LT Indira Thackorie, CD Op Connection Public Affairs Officer, Joint Task Force Central, Toronto, and Colleen Swider, Media Relations Manager of the Canadian International Air Show, for this rare opportunity. Furthermore, thank you Sub. LT. (N) Gordon Laco, for sharing your historical insights with me while I was onboard the frigate.

The spectacular flight, celebrating The 100 Years of Flight in Canada with the CF-18 piloted by Capt. Tim ‘Donor’ Woods, and the Hawk One F-86 Sabre and the CT-144 Centennial Tutor in formation started the actual flying part of the air show on all three days. This was immediately followed by precision flying of Capt. Woods in the beautifully painted CF-18, as fast as 650 mph, just under the speed of sound.

The Blue Angels have not been in Toronto for several decades, and it was great to see them back and their awesome performance throughout the weekend. I wish to thank the crew of the Fat Albert, led by Maj. Drew Hess, USMC, and Maj. Brendan Burks, USMC for their outstanding demonstration flight on Friday, and Capt. Tyson Dunkelberger, PAO, USMAC, MC2 Chris Laurent, Public Affairs and once again LT Indira Thackorie, CD Op Connection Public Affairs Officer, Joint Task Force Central, Toronto, and Colleen Swider, Media Relations Manager of the Canadian International Air Show, for this rare opportunity.

The Horsemen flew an exciting routine on all days, after all seeing several WWII P-51 Mustangs flying in tight formation is a rare treat! Too bad that on Sunday they only flew two and not the three Mustangs. It was great to see Supermarine Spitfire MK IX flying by, but it would have been even better to see the Spitfire if it would have flown with the CF-18 Hornet for a Canadian Heritage flight, like the Mustangs did with the F-16 Viper and the F-22 Raptor. As for the F-16 and the F-22, more top side fly-by would be recommended, as spectators are not interested in looking at the belly of an aircraft!

Over all, the CNE – CIAS was much improved from the last couple of years. In fact, it was better than Abbotsford in many ways, which is saying a lot, even though Abbotsford has static displays. For this year the Canadian International Air Show earned a well deserved 8.75 out 10!

Some of the participants were:
The Blue Angels
The Snowbirds
The CF-18 Hornet Century Demo Team
F-22 Raptor
F-16 Fighting Falcon
CF-18 Hornet
Supermarine Spitfire
The Horsemen upto 3 P-51 Mustangs
Hawk One F-86 Sabre

Rating: 8.75 out of 10

Parking: $5 to $20 for the day depending on location.

There were lots of thundering noise, and lighting quick action in the sky above Windsor over the weekend of August 29-30 courtesy of the Windsor International Air Show. It was a blast to see Capt. The spectacular flight, celebrating The 100 Years of Flight in Canada. The Canadian Forces had a great presence over the sky at the Windsor air show with the Skyhawks Parachute Team and with the famous Snowbirds.

The Windsor air show has been dormant for several years, and has been started up once again in 2009. The Windsor International Air Show is not to be confused with the Red Bull air races, held too, at Windsor annually. However, Michael Goulian, one of the performing pilots from the Red Bull series of events, who just come back from winning the Red Bull air race at Budapest, did participate in the air show.

The Windsor International air show was a great place to spend some time, to see, and learn about different aircrafts, and it was also a place to honour Canada’s War Veterans.
The directing team of the air show, and their volunteers has to be congratulated for organizing a very good air show, giving their welcome and hospitality to the Kids Kick Cancer on Friday, and recognizing the Veterans throughout the weekend! There were a good selection of static aircraft from the US, representing the USAF and Navy. Such as a rather unique ex Hurricane hunter C-130 Hercules, a KC-135R Tanker, a rarely seen C-2 Greyhound, and (4) four F-15C Strike Eagles, (too bad they did not perform!!). There were the usual no-shows due to maintenance issues or other related difficulties, but even without them, there were about 40-45 aircraft on the tarmac, including the WWII B-25 Mitchell, and a P-51D Mustang. In addition to the static aircraft, one could look at some antique cars, and some WWII vintage armor displayed near the Veterans area. There was also a WWII Avro Lancaster bomber, undergoing restoration on display by the hangar of the Canadian Historical Aircraft Association, along with the de Havilland D.H.98 Mosquito, wooden superstructure. For real historical aircraft buffs, these were planes to see.

The weather, unfortunately, was not cooperating much during the event. On Friday it rained heavily, and the Snowbirds had to cancel their practice due to this. Saturday started off with dark overcast clouds early in the morning, but cleared rather quickly, giving plenty of sunshine. The clouds returned however, and they provided a dramatic and very photogenic background to photograph the aircraft performing in the show. Sunday, it was very dark, chilly and very windy in the morning. Toward noon it started to clear, and the remaining clouds were not as dark, but it was still unseasonably cold, and windy. To photograph the aircraft with a larger lens was a challenge due to the wind shear on the lens. The layout of the show was well laid out, with plenty of flight line view available for the attendees and aspiring photographers. There were adequate food concessions (some from catering trucks) and the sanitation facilities were well spread out.

The performances ranged from very good to excellent. On Sunday the Snowbirds had to switch #3 to #10 just as they were about to take off, which delayed their performance, and cancelled their fly-by with the Hawk One. Despite the delay, their performance dazzled the crowds.

I would like to thank the following people who made me feel welcome and their hospitality was much appreciated: Keith Baxter – Director of Operation, Theresa Baxter – “Chief of Everything,” Bill Reilly – Media Operations, Brad Saunders – Ground Boss, Mike Beale of the Canadian Historical Aircraft Association, Lt. Errol McKenzie, Airport Security and his team. In addition, I wish to thank Capt. Tim Woods and his CF-18 Demo crew, and Capt. Cregg Wiebe, Snowbirds pilot who flew the Golden Centennaires Centennial CT-144 Tutor for their gracious cooperation.

The list of some of some of the performers and static warbirds at the show:

-Snowbirds
-Skyhawks Parachute Team Jump of the Canadian Army
-Golden Centennaires Centennial CT-144 Tutor
-F-86 Hawk One Sabre
-B-25 Mitchell bomber
-P-51D Mustang
-(4) US Air Force F-15 Strike Eagle
-US Air Force KC-135R Stratotanker
-US Air Force Hercules C-130H Hurricane Hunter
-US Navy C-2 Greyhound
-MH-53E Sea Dragon from the US the Airbome Countermeasures Weapons Systems Training School

Over all, the Windsor International Air Show was a very good show. While it was not the biggest air show this year in Canada, it was so far, one of the best, earning them a well deserved 8.75 out 10!

Abbotsford International Air Show, Aug. 7-9, 2009

Location: Abbotsford International Airport, Abbotsford, British Columbia.

Admission: Adult $25, Child $10, Carload (max 8 persons) $80, Runway seating extra $10.
Parking: Free
Value: Good

The Abbotsford air show, just about 40 minutes east of Vancouver in B.C., historically has been one of the largest and perhaps the best Canadian air shows. Due to this good reputation, I finally decided to visit and review the air show. For me, being Toronto based, to visit Abbotsford was a considerable undertaking due to the 2800 miles distance (one way). So, with great anticipation, I looked forward to the air show.

The show headliners were the Snowbirds, Hawk One Sabre, Centennial Tutor, the Century CF-18, and the Skyhawks Parachute Team jumping from a USAF C-17 Globemaster. The Canadian Armed forces had a very good presence at Abbotsford, with several static and performing aircraft, including a tactical demonstration by the ground forces with air cover support. The US forces were extremely well represented both in the static and performer line up including the F-16 Viper West Demo Team. All the performances were good, but a bit on the short side on Sunday when it came to duration. Especially short were the Heritage Flight, (one pass from each direction L&R and the crossover, that was it), and the CF-18 Hornets during the tactical demo. There were a number of WWII warbirds; including the rare Grumman F7F Tigercat, from the cold war era, a Polish built MiG 17 in Polish markings, and several civilian performers including Rob Holland, who always dazzles the crowds with his extreme flying! The static display included the B-52H Stratofortress, KC-10 Extender and KC-135 Stratotanker, the Royal Air force (UK) Sentry AEW1 Boeing E3D, and a number USAF fighters, trainers, and helicopters including the US Coast Guard’s MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter demonstrating Search And Rescue capabilities.

I would like to thank the following persons who made my visit especially memorable one: Captain Tim "Donor" Woods Demo Pilot and the crew of the CF-18 Century Team lead by Sgt. Jim Ryan, Captain Alexander Cadieux Public Affairs Officer, National Defence, Major Ryan Palmer Pilot and the crew of the CP-140 Aurora, S/Sgt. Nigel Bushe, RCMP, and Roger Bishop.

The weather, unfortunately, was far from the best. On Friday and Saturday it was overcast with a low ceiling, and it was just too dark and monotone gray for great photography, and, it was surprisingly chilly on Friday. On Sunday it started out with gray clouds, even a few droplets of rain materialized for about 20 seconds, then clouds dissipated rapidly and the sun broke through. In all, Sunday was the best for viewing and for photography.

The layout of the show, as shown in the diagram, favors the VIP and Chalet section of the show, which was fenced off from the general public with its own parking area too. The general admission viewing area beyond the orange fencing provides adequate viewing but far from exceptional. For an additional $10.00, one could upgrade and move from the orange fenced area up to 30 yards closer to the flight line, in the reserved seating section. (Depending in which row they would be sitting, and as long as all the people remained seated, and were not larger than an average sized person, I must qualify this).

Regardless where one stands or sits to view low level action, landings or take offs, one just about required binoculars, or a 400mm+ lens for good viewing or photography due to the distance from the runway and the flight line. However, using such sized telephoto lens would not truly help in getting a close up shot of an aircraft on the tarmac, due to heat haze, which just makes all the shots wavy and distorted. For panning and continuous shooting the speakers mounted on flag poles in front of the orange fence approx. 50 yards, also interfered. A number of my shots were ruined due to this. Of course using a smaller telephoto or zoom lens will work on larger aircraft, but for the jet fighters or WWII warbirds, it would limit the image size.

While the location of the media tent did not affect the general public much, for the working pro, it was placed way too far back from the fenced line. The elevated stand did not offer much improvement either. In addition, the working pros were not allowed in earlier to take proper photos of static aircraft, without the crowds, as this is the arrangement and is pretty much the standard at most air shows. Some of the misinformed volunteers who directed traffic were not helpful or were quite rude, as I and many other media persons had problems in getting to the designated media parking area. The volunteer staff at the Media tent was friendly, and showed good hospitality, and assisted where they could. Thank you, Tony and John for that!

There were plenty of food and beverage concession stands, but the speed of actually buying something, was hampered by the fact one had to line up several times; first to buy a coupon, then to use the coupon to get the food and beverage. Simply put, using coupons are very inefficient, and are a time wasting solution. I’d suggest this should just be scrubbed to improve customer friendly service.

Sanitation facilities were plenty, but instead of just portable units, there were also trailers for women and men, and urinal tents for the men! Hello, maybe the organizers enjoy standing in someone’s urine leaking from the urinal trough, I certainly do not!!!

The above issues are our thoughts and should be considered improvements by the organizers.

My over all impression of the Abbotsford air show taking all the above into consideration: It was good and well organized in many ways but lacked some organization details and proper follow through. Abbotsford air show has the potential to truly be Canada’s best air show with some required improvements, but until then, I can only give it 7.5 out of 10.
