On Saturday, it was heavily over cast with brisk winds, which made the already cold air feel even worse. I’d come prepared though, with a winter jacket, hat and gloves, as these were required! The only good thing about Saturday, during the actual time of the air show, it did not rain. But, due to the low ceiling of the dark clouds, many of the scheduled performances were cancelled. However, the organizers tried to put some aircraft into the air such as the T-6G with Bill Leff in the cockpit, the P-51D Mustang with Dale “Snort” Snodgrass, Otto the Helicopter, F4U Corsair, F-15E Strike Eagle, F/A-18 Hornet, F/A-18F Super Hornet, and The Blue Angels performed with a low level variations of their normal routines. Performances with other multiple aircraft were all cancelled with exception of the Blue Angels. The pyro was set off with a wall of fire which warmed up the crowds for a couple of seconds. All of their performances were much appreciated by the crowds, approximately 25,000 who braved the bone chilling temperatures.

This year's theme: GO NAVY!The grass field and the flight path for the air show provided excellent viewing and photographic opportunities in general if one got to the show early.
Geneseo Air Show, advertised as “The Greatest Show on Turf” is located just south of Rochester. The nearest major international gateway for Canadian visitors is at Buffalo, NY. From Buffalo, Geneseo is just southeast of Batavia, NY. This year’s theme was “Go Navy”, with several WWII Navy planes in attendance. On July 10th, Friday, the arrival day for the aircraft was sunny, and pleasant, and provided some good opportunity for photography. However, on Saturday, it was dark and overcast with 90% probability of thunderstorms and heavy rain. It started raining very heavily around 11:20 a.m., and the show was stopped. It continued to rain until about 2:15 p.m. and truly soaked the grounds as the weather once again interfered with the show, just like last year. The air show continued with some delays and cancellation of certain events for the remaining few diehards, due to condition of grass field which was very wet and soggy, and to avoid damaging the planes, if they got stuck in the mud. On Sunday the weather was excellent, as long as one was careful about the mud and the well soaked grass.
For this year there were some changes at the 1941 Historical Aircraft Group, which hosts and runs the air show. Changes for the better. The staff were friendly and helpful. The air show with slight adjustments can be improved to fully utilize the charm of Geneseo: the grass turf, out in the country, with no buildings in the background. Under certain conditions with the right aircraft it could be almost like a time-travel, going back to the WWI era, when the replica WWI warbirds take into the air. There were several food vendors, with the best Hamburgers from the 1941 HAG stand. The sanitation facilities were adequate, but some could have been located closer to the flight line.
The Navy theme worked quite well, as there were some rarely seen planes at Geneseo for this year: F6F Hellcat, SB2C Helldiver (the only one still flying), Canso also know as the PVY Catalina, (built in Canada), F4F Wildcat, TBM Avenger, (3) Corsairs, several T-6SNJ and Stearman, trainers all participating and not just static. Another major attraction was the F15E Strike Eagle Demonstration Team, which also flew with the P-51D Mustang in the Heritage Flight on both days, and on Sunday there was a Hercules cargo drop demonstration. Rob Holland dazzled the crowds with his amazing flying skills. All these acts put on a great performance! The Beech C-45, and Cessna T-50 Bobcat, were used as photoplanes for some of the photographers.

Over all, the Geneseo Air Show show provides very good entertainment for the dollar. Being a unique (grass landing field) makes this air show charming and worth attending. Keep up the good work folks!

What a show, no wonder it had a record attendance for a relatively unknown show! The Wings & Wheels in St. Thomas, just south of London, Ontario, had an excellent show. It was well organized, helpful staff, excellent selection of aircraft performing and static. The concessions were not over priced. For example, most events I’ve attended, charge $3.00 for a bottle of water, only a $1.00 here! Same with food, the selections were not over priced. Sanitary facilities were plenty and well dispersed. One could go for a ride either on a helicopter or the Harvard.
The number of aircraft both performing and static would put just about any other major air show in North America to shame! There were so many American Air Force and Navy aircraft in attendance it felt like the American’s invaded St. Thomas! After all, the airport is a relatively small one with one major runway operating and that is a relatively short one too, yet it was able to handle just about all the aircraft including the C-17 all the way from Alaska! In fact, not all the aircraft could be parked at the airport. Most of the flying demonstrators were staged from the London airport, due to the number of static planes on display.
Everyone was glad to see that Snowbirds, the Centennial Tutor and the refurbished classic RCAF Goldenhawk F-86 Sabre were present and were able to dazzle the crowds. Although the Snowbirds flew a shorter routine than at Rochester, just a couple of weeks ago, that was a bit of a let down. As for the American planes the US Air Force must had all their spare aircraft up here. I never seen so many A-10 flying in formation in an air show, and on display. The Lancaster bomber from Hamilton escorted by a P-51D Mustang also made a surprise fly-by. All thes performances contributed to make The Wings & Wheels in St. Thomas, a very memorable event.
The show annoucing needs some improvements: i.e., especially communicating the direct location of incoming aircraft, and having someone who can speak fluently in English would be helpful. Apart from the announcing only the weather was a disappointment, but that was beyond persons' control. Saturday it rained all morning, but some of the show went on after 2 pm when it stopped raining. On Sunday the weather cooperated it was mostly sunny.
Over al,l Wings & Wheels in St. Thomas is an excellent value. A must see for any aviation enthusiast in the Southern Ontario Region and surrounding American States. It is really, worth attending this show! We'llill be there next year!
