Club Run to Malta - Vintage Wings of Canada | The "Club Run" was an informal name for aircraft supply operations to the besieged island of Malta during the Second World War. During the interminable ordeal that was the siege, the Royal Navy and the merchant navy put together almost non-stop convoys to resupply the island with food, materiel and weapons. This included most importantly the supply by aircraft carrier of combat aircraft such as Albacores, Fulmars, Swordfishes, Hurricanes and Spitfires. These aircraft were flown off when they were in range, escorted by experienced Malta hands. Starting with Operation Hurry in August of 1940, the Royal Navy (including USS Wasp) made 28 “Club Runs”, ending with Operation Train in October of 1942, attempting to deliver more than 750 aircraft, Not all aircraft were launched or made it to Malta if they were, but enough were delivered to make the difference in the Malta air war. Here is the story of on such “Club Run”, Operation Salient, told through the eyes of Flight Sergeant Calvin Taylor, a Canadian who was one of the 32 Spitfire pilots on HMS Eagle who made it to Malta on June 9th, 1942....

Flying Attractions Added to Vectren Dayton Air Show Line-up
Dayton, Ohio – Vectren Dayton Air Show officials announced today the addition of three flying attractions for the 2012 event, which will be held on July 7th and 8th at the Dayton International Airport. Two historic aircraft, the J-3 Piper Cub and the Tuskegee T- 6 Texan will celebrate their respective heritage along with a modern-day demonstration of the US Coast Guard’s HH-65 Dolphin
at the 38th annual event. Officials also announced today that the Brazilian Air Force Smoke Squadron will not be appearing at the 2012 show. The Brazilian Embassy in Washington D.C. notified the Air Show yesterday that due to recent budget constraints, the team would not be able to participate in this year’s event.
However, the iconic yellow J-3 Piper Cub will be celebrating its 75th anniversary at the 2012 Vectren Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger. Built between 1937 and 1947 by the Piper Aircraft Company, the Cub was originally intended for flight training. However, due to its simplicity and affordability, the Piper Cub became one of the most popular and best known light aircraft of all-time. Air Show spectators will witness the Cub in the air as well as be able to get a closer look at the aircraft on static display.
Another glimpse of history will occur as a T-6 Texan, owned by the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Museum, flies in the Show each day. This rare aircraft is one of two existing T-6 airplanes that were flown by the Tuskegee Airmen. Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American combat pilots trained for the United States Army Air Corps and fought in WWII. A training aircraft, the T-6 appearing at the Vectren Dayton Air Show was delivered in 1943 to the Tuskegee Army Airfield in Alabama. Nicknamed the “pilot maker”, the T-6 was used for training until 1945. Like the Cub, the Tuskegee T-6 will perform in the air as well as participate in a Tuskegee Airmen display.
Contrasting the aircraft of yesterday, the US Coast Guard HH-65 will demonstrate today’s Coast Guard helicopter and its search and rescue capabilities. The Eurocopter HH-65 Dolphin is a twin-engine, single main rotor helicopter that normally carries a crew of four: Pilot, Copilot, Flight Mechanic and Rescue Swimmer. Along with Search and Rescue (SAR), the Coast Guard uses the HH-65 for homeland security patrols, drug interdiction and ice breaking.
Ticket prices will remain unchanged from 2011. The popular Chairman’s Club, LaRosa’s Pavilion, Family 4 Pack, and Blue Sky Chalet tickets are now on sale offering a range of seating amenities. Tickets can conveniently be purchased through our show website at www.daytonairshow.com. Many of these venues sell out early, so don’t wait to get your tickets.
Deep discount general admission tickets are now available for purchase at over 100 Kroger stores in the Dayton-Cincinnati region.

A gift to remember - GAN | Jim Torphy has celebrated quite a few birthdays over the course of his life.
