MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL DEADLINE APPROACHES

All ICAS members are due to renew their annual ICAS memberships not later than Thursday, March 31. In early April, ICAS will pull lists of members in good standing and will use those lists to publish the annual ICAS Industry Guide. If your dues are current, your organization will be listed in the Industry Guide.

FUNDRAISING FOR AMANDA AND KYLE

During the Thunder in the Valley Air Show last weekend in Columbus, Georgia, announcer Hugh Oldham and air boss George Cline used the sponsor appreciation dinner as an opportunity to solicit contributions to the Kyle and Amanda Fund recently established by the ICAS Foundation. The duo’s pitch was low key and had received the approval of air show management.

“It was a pass-the-hat-type of appeal. We explained the challenges that Amanda and Kyle would be facing and asked the folks present at the dinner to contribute what they could,” said Oldham. In the end, the solicitation generated $2,400, every penny of which will go directly to the Franklins to defray some of the medical and logistical expenses they will incur as they both continue to recover from their accident two weeks ago in Brownsville, Texas.

CANADA REMEMBERS RE-LAUNCHES AS FESTIVAL FOR HEROES

In 2009, when the Canada Remembers International Air Show stopped being held at the Saskatoon Airport in Saskatchewan due to construction and space limitations, its organizers did not abandon their efforts to organize and conduct an annual air show that recognizes Canada’s veterans. But they did have to get a bit creative.

And the product of that ingenuity was revealed earlier this month when they announced that the show was being reintroduced as the Canada Remembers International Festival for Heroes, scheduled for August 6 and 7 at the Auto Clearing Motor Speedway.  The new venue and format will include the traditional air show and tribute to veterans, as well as a new event entitled, “Canada’s National Concert for the Troops.”

BLUES TO PERFORM AT LYNCHBURG SHOW

The Lynchburg Regional Air Show, scheduled for May 21 and 22 in Lynchburg, Virginia, will feature the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. According to John Barksdale, the event’s executive director, when the team had a last-minute schedule conflict, the show agreed to step in and host the team.

HILL AFB PUSHES TO 2012

Citing unexpected budget shortfalls, the organizers of the Hill Air Force Base Air Show, originally scheduled for September 24-25, 2011 in Ogden, Utah, have announced that the show will be rescheduled for 2012.

KLATT ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH DARNELL

John Klatt Airshows recently signed an agreement with Darnell Racing Enterprises to add Neal Darnell’s Flash Fire Jet truck to a nationwide schedule of air show performances. Initial plans call for the aircraft and truck to perform at twelve air shows together during the 2011 air show season. In addition to entertaining air show audiences throughout the U.S., the Air National Guard Max Adrenaline Tour will create awareness, education and enthusiasm for the Air National Guard.

WERTH JOINS RED EAGLE AIR SHOW TEAM

ICAS member and air show performer Billy Werth has joined the Red Eagle Air Show team as its new opposing solo pilot following the departure of Buck Roetman from the team. Werth will appear in approximately ten shows with the Red Eagle Air Show team during the 2011 air show season. In addition to his work as an air show pilot, Werth is a captain with a major airline and a major and instructor pilot with the U.S. Air Force Reserves.

KOONTZ RECEIVES 2011 CFI OF THE YEAR AWARD

During an AOPA Safety Seminar on March 22 in Birmingham, Alabama, air show performer, ACE Committee Chairman and ICAS member Greg Koontz was named Flight Instructor of the Year for Alabama and northwest Florida. Presented as part of a larger general aviation awards program, the award was presented by the Alabama/northwest Florida FAA Safety Team.

Paul “Max” Moga was the U.S. Air Force’s F-22 demo pilot during the 2007 and 2008 air show seasons. Early in that tour, he did an interview in which he explained some of the demands and intricacies of performing the air show sequence in this fifth-generation fighter. Since then, the Raptor demonstration has entertained and amazed millions. Although the interview is now nearly four years old, it’s still relevant, insightful and interesting. Great news from the Red Eagles Airshow Team and Grayout Aerosports

Dan McClung, team leader and founder of Red Eagle Air sports is proud and excited to announce the following changes to the Red Eagle Airshow Team.  With the unexpected departure of Ryland “Buck” Roetman for personal reasons, we are pleased to introduce Mr. Billy Werth of Grayout Aerosports as our new opposing solo pilot.

Billy brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Red Eagle Team and upon completion of his training cycle will appear in approximately 10 airshows this season.  (see soon to be updated schedule on website)

Billy is not only an airshow performer but a captain for a regional airline and a Major and Instructor Pilot with the United States Air Force Reserves.  He has accumulated nearly 10,000 hours of flight time in numerous types of aircraft.  He will be performing with us in a Pitts S2C this season.

McClung is on the record as stating, “I think the Red Eagle brand, with the addition of Billy Werth to the team, will continue to be one of the most safe, exciting, and entertaining acts in the airshow industry.  I look for the Red Eagle team to rise to new heights and meet the many challenges of our changing environment and sponsor commitments”.

Chance-Vought V-460: part 4 from The Unwanted Blog by admin | A page of illustrations showing the engine operation for vertical thrust for the V-460, compared to several contemporary Chance-Vought designs with wholly different propulsion systems. Note that the V-460 used the most complex system of the bunch, including not only vectoring the thrust from the cold-gas fans, but also using ejector effect to increase thrust from the hot-gas turbojet exhaust. In the 1960's, the ejector effect was considered very promising, with both the Lockheed "Hummingbird" and the later North American Rockwell XFV-12 built to take advantage of that. But both designs showed the serious limitatiosn of the ejector effect to produce added thrust… while it worked great in subscale models, once scaled up to full size the losses in the system were so bad that it tended to reduce total thrust, not increase it.
