Female Licensed Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics | Nerds in Babeland from nerdsinbabeland.com | For those who don't know me, I have worked in aviation and aerospace for the past decade. In October, I volunteered for a layoff from my job as a technician on the Space Shuttle Program, as it is coming to an end soon. I am very much a space advocate, and have been using Twitter to share my enthusiasm for space for over two years. I am also the founder of the Space Tweep Society, a growing group of space enthusiasts on Twitter. Due to that role, I am often asked to participate in interviews or space outreach activities, many with the goal of encouraging girls to pursue careers in science or technology. This leaves me feeling quite conflicted because I'd love to have more women in aviation and aerospace, but in my experience breaking into these fields was really rough. I almost feel guilty for encouraging them, knowing what kind of obstacles they may face.

Chance-Vought V-460: part 4 from The Unwanted Blog by admin | A page of illustrations showing the engine operation for vertical thrust for the V-460, compared to several contemporary Chance-Vought designs with wholly different propulsion systems. Note that the V-460 used the most complex system of the bunch, including not only vectoring the thrust from the cold-gas fans, but also using ejector effect to increase thrust from the hot-gas turbojet exhaust. In the 1960's, the ejector effect was considered very promising, with both the Lockheed "Hummingbird" and the later North American Rockwell XFV-12 built to take advantage of that. But both designs showed the serious limitatiosn of the ejector effect to produce added thrust… while it worked great in subscale models, once scaled up to full size the losses in the system were so bad that it tended to reduce total thrust, not increase it.

Snowbird Passage from Cockpit Conversation by Aviatrix
We're flying across Saskatchewan, at least I think it's Saskatchewan. You can see how that poor guy got lost in the vicinity of Red Deer. It's flat and laid out with straight lines and fields as far as the eye can see. A voice comes on the radio, 126.7, to say he's VFR from Saskatoon to Biggar at 2500' over highway 14. It sounds like a call anyone would make, except that at the beginning of the call I'm pretty sure he said "military tudor jet." Sure enough he ends the call with "... conflicts, it's Snowbird eleven."
You don't see one Snowbird tooling around that often. I wonder why he's going to Biggar. (Despite the mane, it's littler than most places you'd want to go). I'm surprised that he goes by "Snowbird eleven" when it's just the one plane, and not by some ordinary call letters. I'm picturing the little jet bombing along down there at 2500', thinking maybe it's just an ordinary training solo flight and he's going to visit his mom or something. I mean why not. If he has to fly so many hours to qualify or keep current or whatever, I have no objections to military hardware going to make someone's mom happy.
Another voice comes on the radio. Someone else has also been thinking about the little jet on a cross country jaunt. "I'm jealous," he says. No callsign, just that.
The Snowbird voice answers back, "I'm not even flying!" I'm guessing that means that the guy in the back seat was doing the radio, as opposed to just being on autopilot.

Now if you look close, you'll see what I think is some sort of fighter trainer flying by behind this explosion. I don't know if he was supposed to be this close to it or not, but he's not very far away, that's for

The Kid, meanwhile, decided that since I was the only other person under the age o

Offutt AFB Air Show 2008
It was a great day for flying on the 16th of August out at Offutt AB. Each year the Air Force base puts on a good show for the public displaying the history and superiority of our nation’s air power. To be honest no matter how many of these aircraft I have fueled up or flown in, the excitement never dwindles watching these incredible machines slice through the air. This year’s show was promised to be one of the largest Offutt has ever hosted. I have to say from the years past they were right. L

Experimental Project Files - Bristol Brigand from Warbirds Online by Scott WRG Editor
The success of the
Beaufighter as a torpedo bomber lead to the development of an aircraft dedicated to this role. Developed from the Bristol Buckingham bomber, the Brigand used most of the Buckinghams flight surfaces. Deliveries of the TF.1 Model (Torpedo Fighter Mk I) were made to 36 and 42 Squadrons but with the war over the future of this aircraft was in doubt. It was decided that the type was versatile enough to be rebuilt for a different role. The Brigand was removed from service and rebuilt as a bomber with a clear view canopy and other detail changes and returned to service in Malaysia and Kenya. This robust aircraft served with distinction until eventually replaced by the Canberra.
