He was not court martialled, he claims, because his outspoken views on the fighting effectiveness of the Royal Air Force and the lack of RAF 50th anniversary flying celebrations in l968, might provide embarassing publicity.
It has also since transpired that his one-man anniversary display inadvertently co-incided with the recently exposed 'coup plot' against Prime Minister Harold Wilson's Labour Government.
Now, for the first time since the incident, he has agreed to reveal why he made his incredible flight, which captured the country's imagination and describe his fascinating personal account of that fateful day. ...

RAF Dominie / Rapide in Uruguay 1944/7 from PPRuNe Forums
Having found the following photos among assorted aviation memorabilia, and done a bit of research on the subjects, I thought they might be worth sharing as a record of one of the more obscure RAF deployments.
They show DH Dominie NR673 which was apparently converted back to Rapide standard and shipped by sea to Montevideo, Uruguay in Oct 1944 for use by the British Embassy. Shown at Uruguay Air Force Base No.1 at Montevedeo with a RAF Officer and various local Air Force personnel, it carried the name "Condor de los Andes" and apparently, no national marks. It is recorded as having served there until 1947. The photos carry the stamp of a local photographer ...

2009 Season Review by Flightline UK 2009 has been Flightline UK's biggest season to date with not only UK shows but visits to events in the United Arab Emirates, The Netherlands and Sweden. It has been a very mixed season with some outstanding highlights as well as a few disappointments. The weather, in general, was kind to airshows with only very few "washouts" and certainly much improved on the very difficult conditions experienced in 2007 and 2008…

2009 ASB Person of the Year - ASB.TV Community from http://www.asb.tv/ Before he could even write, a cherub faced Steven Hinton kept people riveted as the four year old gave authoritative tours of the Planes of Fame museum in Chino, California. As the son of museum president Steve Hinton, who is a legendary warbird and race pilot, one might expect such precociousness from the younger Hinton. However, his aviation pedigree only granted him access to remarkable planes and people, but it was his own determination and tremendous work ethic that landed him in the Reno gold circle. As a twelve year old his bedroom became an air racing shrine according to his mother, Karen Hinton, who anticipated he would follow the family's penchant for racing. So it wasn't a surprise when Steven started working his way through airplanes soloing in a Cessna 150 at sixteen and moving through a stearman, L-5, T-6 and ultimately soloing in a P-51 Mustang at nineteen…

Seventy-five years of the swept wing from Bayou Renaissance Man by Peter Seventy-five years ago (from 2010), the technology of swept wings was first mooted in Germany. The German Aerospace Center reports: In the 1930s, the fastest aircraft of the time hit an invisible limit: the sound barrier. As soon as aircraft came anywhere near this barrier, they became increasingly difficult to control. The rudders stopped responding, the wings began to vibrate and the whole aircraft was thoroughly shaken up.

"Super Hercules" from The Unwanted Blog by admin When Lockheed was designing what would become the C-141 "Starlifter," they started with their previous success, the C-130 "Hercules" and expanded it. Stretched the fuselage, swept the wings, added turbojets. Obviously it turned out not to be as simple as that, and the C-141 had almost nothing of the C-130 in it… but in these drawings of the GL-207-45 (submitted for System 476L) from 1960, you can still see a hint of Herc…
