The Royal International Air Tattoo was given a boost this week after the RAF announced which aircraft would be starring along with the Red Arrows in this summer’s flying programme.
Legendary aircraft such as the Lancaster, Spitfire, Hurricane and Dakota will be joined by the RAF’s state of the art multi-role combat aircraft, the Typhoon and the basic trainer aircraft, the Tucano on Saturday July 12 and Sunday July 13. The Typhoon and Tucano will also be flying on Friday, July 11, as part of the special Red Arrows Pit Day.
The power and agility of the Typhoon makes it one of the most eagerly anticipated performers at the airshow. Piloting the multi-role combat aircraft in 2014 will be Flt Lt Noel Rees from 29 (Reserve)
Squadron based at RAF Coningsby.
Demonstrating the capabilities of the Tucano, which provides basic fast jet flying training to RAF and Royal Navy student pilots, will be Flt Lt Dave Kirby. The aircraft, which features the Royal British Legion logo, poppies and the words ‘Lest we Forget’, is operated from No 1 Flying Training School, at RAF Linton-on-Ouse.
As well as enjoying RAF aircraft in action, visitors to this summer’s Air Tattoo will be able to get close to a wide range of RAF aircraft parked in the Showground. There will also be the opportunity to meet many of the pilots and crew.
Air Tattoo Chief Executive Tim Prince said that once again, the RAF has demonstrated the immense value it sees in the airshow, in terms of public engagement opportunities and international diplomacy.”
He said: “The Air Tattoo provides the Royal Air Force with a unique platform on which to highlight the capability of its aircraft and the dedication and skill of all those who fly, maintain and support them. Not only will airshow visitors will be able to see the RAF’s operational aircraft and those from the BBMF that have earned legendary status but they will also be able to join us for the biggest international celebration marking the Red Arrows’ 50th display season.”
The Air Tattoo is staged annually in support of the RAF Charitable Trust. Tickets for the event are only available in advance. Specially-priced Earlybird tickets for next summer’s Air Tattoo, on July 11-13, are available until May 31 from airtattoo.com or by calling 0800 107 1940
0800 107 1940. All accompanied under-16s go free. Free parking.

RAF ANNOUNCES AIR TATTOO HIGHFLYERS
Friday, May 6, 2011
AIR TATTOO AIRCRAFT IN D-DAY TRIBUTE
Among the hundreds of aircraft taking part in the Air Tattoo, on July 16-17, will be a Dakota from the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, painted in D-Day invasion stripes and with the markings carried by No233 Squadron Dakota FZ692. This aircraft was delivered to No233 squadron at RAF Blakehill Farm, Wiltshire in March 1944, and on the night of June 5 1944, 30 Dakotas from the squadron took gliders and parachutists from the 3rd Parachute Brigade to Normandy, returning later in the day to drop supplies.
Nurses stationed at Blakehill Farm who looked after wounded soldiers on evacuation flights became the first female RAF aircrew to fly into the combat zone. A Dakota from No233 Sqn became the first aircraft to land at a British-controlled airstrip in France after the invasion, on June 13. The squadron went on to provide aircraft towing gliders that carried troops from the 1st Airborne Division to Arnhem for Operation Market Garden, the attempt to capture key bridges across the Rhine in September 1944.Monday, August 30, 2010

The DC3 - Step back in time!
A feature aircraft at the Wide Bay Australia International Air show to be held at Bundaberg Airport over the weekend of 3-5 July 2009 will be one of the most popular aircraft ever built. The DC3 Was the RAAF'S WW2 General Transport & Cargo aircraft and gained quite a reputation for its reliability and dependable service. The DC3 and Hercules will be in attendance at the Airshow and the general public will be able to get up close to the ‘Herc’ while it is on public display.
Over 15,000 aircraft, known as The DC3/C47/Dakota/Gooney Bird/Sky Train and many other nick names, were built from the1940’s. General Eisenhower is recorded as saying the success of the aircraft was a major reason for the WW11 victory. It was the foundation aircraft for many airlines following the war and an earlier version, the DC2 was a star in the 1934 London/Melbourne Air Race for KLM.
The aircraft flying at the Airshow has quite a history. Delivered to the USAAF in 1942, it saw active service in the Pacific region with the name of Shanghai Lil and still has evidence of several bullet holes in the fuselage. In 1944 it was purchased by the Australian Government and became the start up aircraft for TAA in 1946 when it made the inaugural Laverton/Sydney flight. The name of 1838 Explorer Joseph Hawdon is the man the aircraft is named after. It flew the entire TAA network until retired in 1970 and later was placed on a pole outside the TAA Tullamarine terminal for eight years.
Because of the historical importance of the plane, it was restored by volunteers in 1987 and today is operated by Qantas Foundation Memorial Ltd for charitable and promotional services. Pilots Alan Searle and Chris Pennycuick, who originally flew this aircraft in New Guinea, will be at the controls.
To be at the Airshow to view this piece of aviation history, purchase your tickets from any branch of the Wide Bay Australia Bank or RACQ office. Further information from the Airshow hotline on 4155 0044 or the website at www.widebayairshow.com.au

Ugo Crisponi is a famous Italian illustrator who manages the AVIATIONGRAPHIC.COM, a guild of Aviation Artists & Illustrators offering more than 1.500 Squadron Prints, Lithographs, Illustrations and Aviation Art.
