Twilight Skies and Midnight Blues - Cara Renee | As we approach the twilight of another airshow season this Veteran’s Day weekend, here are some of my favorite images from the year. Many of these were captured long after the crowds of spectators had left and the last flights of the day....

Veterans Day: reflecting on service, Air Force Memorial - By Tech. Sgt. Karen J. Tomasik Air Force Public Affairs Agency | Veterans Day is near and dear to my family since many family members have served this nation across several service branches. I’ve attended many ceremonies and services at various locations over the years, but there is a place I have yet to visit on a military holiday – the Air Force Memorial....

Tuskegee Airmen rose to meet the challenges - MY SA | During the waning years of World War II, the Tuskegee Airmen were called Red Tails because the tail assemblies of their P-51 Mustangs were painted bright red. The Germans called them Schwartze Vogelmenschen, or “Black Bird Men.”  San Antonio veteran Thomas Ellis called them comrades. Ellis, the first enlisted administrative clerk of the 301st Fighter Squadron, maintained the service records of the pilots, tracking every mission, sortie and enemy kill. He also recorded those missing in action and typed notification letters to wives and parents of the dead....

Tuskegee Airmen To Be Honored in Colorado  - Aero News Network | Colorado is known for the Rocky Mountains, great skiing and the "Mile High City," but it also happens to be home to more surviving Tuskegee Airmen than any other state. On Saturday night, November 19, the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum in Denver's historic Lowry neighborhood is hoping for a good turnout at a gala to honor the eight Red Tail Squadron members who reside in the state....

Dogtags - CAF Red Tail Squadron's Blog | Today is Veteran's Day.  As I type this, my late father's WWII dog tag is hanging on my desk lamp.  There's only one tag which is odd because the U.S. military issued each soldier two tags during WWII.  One was to stay with the body if the G.I. was killed and the other was to be turned in to expedite the paperwork.  Since Dad came home in one piece after piloting his B-26 "Jolly Roger" on 27 missions over France and Germany, I have no idea what happened to the other one....

Jackson-area family shares story of World War II POW for Veterans Day - MLive | With every year, the number of surviving World War II veterans gets smaller, but their stories and sacrifices shouldn’t be forgotten.  Ken Wood, 76, of Horton, a former Marine and veteran of the Korean War, was having just that conversation with neighbor John C. Butterfield one day when Butterfield shared a story about his father, Staff Sgt. Jack V. Butterfield of Jackson.  Jack was a tail gunner on a B-17 that was shot down over Germany in 1944. He was held as a prisoner of war in a German stalag for more than five months....

Scottsdale WWII vet making sure B-17 crew’s dramatic stories survive - Arizona Republic News | A 67-year-old photo of 10 uniformed men in front of a B-17 aircraft hangs in the den of World War II veteran Bill Nopar’s Scottsdale condominium.  It captures a group of near strangers, several still teenagers, frozen in time just prior to embarking on nine sleep-deprived months flying bombing missions over Germany....

Angel's Share - Vintage Wings of Canada | A Remembrance Day Story | ... Early on Sunday morning, January 24th, 1943, the crew of the four-engined Short Sunderland flying boat, DV979 of 246 Squadron, RAF, dropped by the Imperial Hotel in Bowmore to pick-up hot tea en route to the motor launch which would take them out to their aircraft, anchored on the grey waters of Loch Indaal.  In the gloom of a cold dawn, the young men sang the recent hit song “You Are My Sunshine”, determined to make themselves happy “when skies are grey”....

On Veteran's Day, Recalling The Navigator - The Jewish Daily Forward | ...In fact, he first took off more than sixty years ago on a spring day in 1945, in a B-25 Mitchell from a base in Ghisonnacia. With the rocky coast of Corsica falling behind, the pilot lifted the aircraft into the sky and the bombardier sat with his finger on the trigger while the 25-year-old navigator from Brooklyn plotted the course north on his instruments....

Happy Veteran's Day: Friday Flyers - Flight to Success | Marvin Richard Petitt Senior, "Marvin." and Marvin Richard Petitt Junior, "Dick." | Each Friday I honor a special person involved in Aviation as my Friday Flyer. But today it’s important to honor a Veteran—that under appreciated hero who went to war ... out of duty and obligation to his country. Sometimes we don’t have the ability to choose the path our life takes, especially if we’re drafted. But if we’re lucky enough to return home to the life of freedom that we fought for, we do have the opportunity to choose the remainder of our journey....

Sky's no limit for Bulldog - AOPA | Marine Sgt. Michael "Bulldog" Blair tore through his sport pilot training in AOPA's 2010 Fun to Fly Sweepstakes Remos GX, and now he's set his sights even higher—much higher. Burt's 'Research Project' Tinkering with the wing ship-seaplane idea - EAA By Steve Schapiro | When we heard rumors that Burt Rutan, in retirement, is back at the drafting table, we thought we should go right to the source. In a private chat yesterday (November 9), he confirmed he is working on a new design, Model 372-3. “It is a...

A Quest to Achieve the Highest Darwin Award By Dan Pimentel, Airplanista Editor | What is it with some people and balloons?  I am not talking about licensed hot air balloon pilots who are serious about adhering to FAA regulations, or those who build and pilot airships, which I know are technically not “balloons” but somewhat related.  No, I’m talking about people who strap themselves to a lawn chair held aloft by a cluster of balloons and blast off freestyle to somewhere, or wannabe reality TV buffoons who build a fake spaceship in their backyard, launch it skyward and then call every media market in the country screaming frantically that their kid is trapped inside....
