Veterans Day Observance hosted by the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Dixie Wing

Peachtree City (GA) – On Saturday, November 8th, veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will be honored at Peachtree City’s 2014 Veterans Day Observance hosted by the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Dixie Wing.   The program will be held during the flying museum’s fourth annual Veterans Day Open House, 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.  The open house and program is free to the public.The open house will begin at 9:00 a.m. with tours of the CAF Dixie Wing Historical Airpower Facility museum and workshop where vintage aircraft are restored and maintained.  Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions regarding current projects and education exhibits.  A variety of vintage military vehicles and aircraft will be on display, including the CAF Dixie Wing’s World War II-era planes.

It is estimated that over 2.8 million Americans have served in Iraq and Afghanistan during the Global War in Terror beginning in 2011, with many servicemen and servicewomen serving multiple tours over the last thirteen years.

Music Alive, Peachtree City’s Official Ambassadors of Song, will perform patriotic songs beginning at 10:30 a.m., followed by a program that includes a launch of Dixie Wing aircraft at 11:00 a.m., recognition of local veterans and guest speakers that include Masters of Ceremonies Col Bob Grove USAF, Ret. and Peachtree City Mayor Vanessa Fleisch.

New to the Veterans Day program is a flyover lead by Dixie Wing warbirds, scheduled for 12:30 p.m..The CAF Dixie Wing was founded in 1987 as the 83rd chapter of the Commemorative Air Force.  The all-volunteer organization has grown to 250 members that have restored and regularly fly six World War II aircraft.  In addition to participating in over twenty air shows throughout the United States, the Dixie Wing hosts patriotic and educational events, as well as free tours for schools and youth groups.  Previous Peachtree City Veterans Day programs have honored veterans from World War II, the Korean War and the Viet Nam War.  Veterans from all eras are encouraged to attend the program.Veterans Day dates back to 1918, when President Woodrow Wilson declared November 11th Armistice Day to remember the sacrifices of the men and women made during World War I.  After World War II, Armistice Day was expanded to celebrate all veterans.  On June 1, 1954, congress approved replacing "Armistice" with "Veterans," and it has been known as Veterans Day since.

There are some high res photos taken by Jeffery Howard (posted with permission) of the crash and there is a link to a you tube video taken by the in-cockpit camera of the last 1 minute and 40 seconds of the flight. It includes a stop action sequence of the last 5 seconds, wherein some interesting things can be seen. The mysterious loss of George's glasses were revealed (at 4:39 to 4:41 in the video) and from the pilot's perspective just how close the engine came to him during the crash. It is also interesting to note how the video camera when faced with 10 g's plus still survived, but with some major distortion in output.

Veterans Day 2010 Message from TD Barnes

This Veterans Day I ask you to join our nation in remembering and honoring the past service of America's veterans, and urge my fellow Americans to renew our commitment to meet the challenges of America's future for which our nation’s veterans gave so much.

Note that I used the word renew rather than continue. This is for good reason. The last week of September a group of Groom Lake veterans had the honor of participating in a legacy tour in our nation’s capitol where they conducted panel presentations at various agencies of our government. I returned home with the realization that our audiences consisted of veterans of our time, but were sadly void of the younger generation I expected to be filling the shoes of the 1.2 million or more men and women who perished in or as a result of military conflicts that enabled us to live in a free society today.

Today, while my “can do” generation pays solemn remembrance and homage to America’s finest heroes who gave everything in defense of our freedom, I fear we have somehow created an iPod generation that sees this merely as a day for celebrating a day off from work. One must take stock of our somehow failing to educate this generation to understand the sacrifices made in order to win and preserve the freedom they enjoy today. Today many of our leaders, media, politicians, judges, and even our educators have removed God, our Pledge of Allegiance, and even the wearing of the American Flag from our schools and public events for fear they might offend someone. Our veterans fought for these rights. We have to ask, "Were the sacrifices of our veterans made in vain?" Has political correctness replaced the pride, the protocol, the honor code, code of conduct, and even our nation’s constitution espoused by generations past?

While we are renewing commitment to the past service to our great country, we must also renew love of country, belief in freedom, opportunity, responsibility, and faith in America's future. As we commemorate this day of reverence and respect, let us also remember this unity of spirit that has guided our nation forward from its beginnings. No words can repay the debt of gratitude we owe to the men and women who have stood up for our freedom. We can, however, honor the memory of our veterans best by remaining the best kind of Americans we can be and by keeping our nation strong and secure, one nation under God, to fulfill the vision of a better world that so many of our veterans gave so much to create. To accomplish this we must somehow reestablish our generation and its standards as icons and models to the generations to follow. As Director of the Nevada Aerospace Hall of Fame I intend for NVAHOF to set standards and high water marks in education and the honoring our state’s role models for others in our nation to follow.
