Looking Back – Looking Ahead
As we start to prepare and look forward to the exciting 25th Anniversary Prairie Air Show (PAS), there are many important benefits the Air Show brings to the Central Illinois area. Since the Air Show moved to the General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport in Peoria, the Air Show has seen steady growth in attendance and participation. With these improvements and growth the Prairie Air Show is one of the top air shows in the Midwest.
In 2008 the Prairie Air Show accomplished the following:
-The air show achieved enough profit to make several charitable contributions to local organizations and military support groups
-PAS paid over $20,000 out to military support groups and charitable organizations.
-PAS directly paid locally over $150,000 for goods and services within the Central Illinois area.
-We had attendance exceeding 60,000 consumers for the weekend
-We had 31% of consumers travel more than 50 miles to attend the show and
-We had 9% of consumers travel more than 100 miles.
-Over 38% of the consumers were attending Prairie Air Show for the first time
-Over 19% were attending an air show for their very first time.
-Due to the success and importance to the area. PAS signed a 3 year agreement with. the Metropolitan Airport Authority of Peoria to continue the airshow at the General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport.
While these are just the direct benefits, Brent Lonteen President of CVB states “The Prairie Air Show is an important event for the Central Illinois area. Not only is it a great event for the people in the area but the people that come in from outside the area spend a great deal of money when they visit; in gas, hotels and restaurants. The impact to the local economy goes far beyond what the Air Show spends, which in itself is a nice boost.”
Dean Heinzmann Chairman of the Metropolitan Airport Authority of Peoria Board says, “We could not be happier with the Prairie Air Show. This event provides us the opportunity to showcase the airport improvements and all that the General Wayne A. Downing Airport has to offer as the premier airport serving the people of Central Illinois.”
As we look forward to the 2009 Prairie Air Show we are excited about the possibilities and the performers such as the US Air Force Thunderbirds and many others that have already committed to being a part of the 25th Anniversary Prairie Air Show. In addition we are looking to increase charitable contributions throughout the many organizations in the local area.
