I had applied for permission to take shots at the base, but had not arranged a date for the 'photo-sortie' but I was in the area and the sun was out so I thought I would see if the 'sortie' could happen that morning. I had the paper-work but no date, so there was the chance that they could have said 'no'. However because I did not have to enter the base because the shots I wanted could be taken on the 'public' side of the road, there was no need togo their side.

... Schrenker told air traffic controllers that the window of his plane had imploded and he was bleeding profusely. The distress call came in when the aircraft was about 35 miles southwest of Birmingham. Controllers tried to tell the pilot to divert the flight to Gadsden and then Pell City, Alabama, but he did not respond.
The plane was enroute to Destin, Florida according to authorities. After the call came in, military aircraft were dispatched to intercept the plane. The jets spotted the Malibu and deployed flares to illuminate the plane as it was flying and noticed that its door was open and the cockpit was dark, according to the Santa Rosa authorities. The jets continued to follow the plane until it crashed. ...
