GV man's aunt helped open skies to women - Green Valley News & Sun - News
The Tucson chapter of the all-female pilot's organization "Ninety-Nines" got a little better understanding of an Amelia Earhart-era pilot who was one of aviation's daring-do trendsetters.
Joe Whitelaw of Green Valley spoke to Ninety Nines that included a student pilot, a helicopter and gyro-plane pilot, a flight instructor, a few who have decades of flying experience and several who own their own planes.
Whitelaw is proud of his late aunt Mary Margaret "Peggy" Gauslin, who was born in 1905, got her pilot's license in 1930, and was one of the first 200 members of the Ninety Nines.
"Peggy got her pilot's license on Feb. 21, 1930, and was very active in the Ninety Nines from 1930 to 1937. Why she quit I'm not sure but that was the year we lost Amelia Earhart," Whitelaw told the group.
"It was the time of the Depression, money was tight and Peggy took a job with the Los Angeles Times as a copy editor.
"She would tell us how members of the group helped each other during the Depression. If a member needed help they were there to do what they could."
Whitelaw said his aunt, who was the youngest in a family of eight children, was like Earhart.  ...

1974 memories by David Cenciotti
Recently, Jean-Luc Beghin, a Belgian Aviation Illustrator (I suggest you to visit his site: http://www.jeanlucbeghin.com/), sent me the following pictures explaining that he was looking for the names of some pilots of the 22° Gruppo of the 51° Stormo of the Aeronautica Militare (Italian Air Force, ItAF) who he had the opportunity to meet and invite for dinner at his house, in 1974, while they were deployed to Beauvechain, Belgium, for a Squadron Exchange. While I was unable to recognize them I thought that the pictures below could be of some interest for the F-104 and flight gears enthusiasts as they provide some details on the flight suits, patch and hats worn by the Italian pilots in the mid 70's. ...

Challenge ends mechanic's long career at Hill AFB - Salt Lake Tribune
For Rick Hurtado, it was one final challenge.
After 44 years in the Air Force, Hurtado was ready to retire. But first, the master mechanic's supervisors asked him to look at a F-16 fighter jet that was alerting its pilots to a dangerous malfunction.
The problem was first noticed in 2006 in the skies over Europe, where aircraft 90-0419 was a part of the 23rd Fighter Squadron -- the Fighting Hawks of Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany.
"Warning. Warning. Warning," the jet's computer-simulated voice -- known not so affectionately as "Bitching Betty" -- alerted her pilot.
A code in the aircraft's display panel indicated that the jet was having ...

Vitnage Mooney Group (VMG) Northeast Chapter formed from Pilots of America Message Board
The Vintage Mooney Group (VMG) is pleased to announce the formation of it's first new chapter, the VMG Northeast Chapter.
As you know, the VMG was formed in 2003 by Richard Todd and others to establish a Group of Mooneys that would fly to fun fly-ins around the southwest. Over time, that geography expanded to include the western USA.
Well, Jeff Miller of Maine and Tom Myers of Massachusetts said enough is enough. We should have fun flyins in the northeast. And the formation happened at the speed of a Mooney.
If you are interested in joining the VMG Northeast, simply go to http://www.vintagemooneygroup.com and click on VMG Northeast. It's FREE to join and it'll give you yet another reason to fly your Mooney to a cool destination in the Northeast or the West and make new friends, meet old friends, swap Mooney tales, Mooney maintenance, and Mooney Mods.  Thanks to Jeff & Tom for founding this chapter!  Phil Corman  Chief Mooniac, VMG
