Spitfire Mk.II and the BA Hawk. Some musings on how they compare. from AirSpace by dakota67 | During the summer of 1940, very young men were fighting, in MK.II Spitfires, against enemy aircraft intent on destroying Britain's seaports and RAF bases. Now, nearly 70 years later, similar young pilots are training on the BA Hawk. A while back I used a fine photograph of these two great aircraft in formation as the basis of a rather simple comparison between the front-line interceptor of 1940 and the advanced trainer of today. I have been told that the Hawk is the easier aircraft to handle, albeit packed with many more "bells and whistles". The attached item was cobbled together pretty well off 'the-top-of-my-head', so do please forgive any areas where I may have strayed from exact numbers.

She did it all again for the cameras on December 21, but by then she already had ensured her place in history and star status among her friends. To view the full article, visit Macarthur Chronicle.

Real People: Woman was one of the first female air traffic controllers by TheKathrynReport | Gloria Langmade Yow was on the front lines of women's liberation years before it had a name. In September 1947, she was the only woman in the air traffic control station in Danville, Va., surrounded by some fellows who weren't sure what to make of her. Yow had been an air traffic controller, and certified as a supervisor, more than three years before she was transferred to the Virginia station. But a woman had no place in the all-male world of air traffic controlling; they thought (and sometimes told her). This was unfamiliar territory. The first female air traffic controller was certified in 1942, just months before Yow. To view the full article, visit The Times News.
