Flying coal - The Berlin airlift from Diamond Pilots
HEROISM, geopolitics and new technology make an ideal mixture for a popular historian. The story of the Berlin airlift in 1948-49 has all that and more. The Anglo-American decision to circumvent the arbitrary Soviet closure of road and rail routes to the German capital marked the start of the cold war. For the first time, the Western allies were signalling their willingness to resist the creeping Soviet takeover of the eastern half of Europe. The airlift's end, with Soviet acceptance of a new West German currency in West Berlin, was a stalemate that remained in place in Europe until the collapse of communism 40 years later. ...

Harrison Ford - Parade.com
Harrison Ford looks like an action hero from one of his movies as he scrambles over the top of his Bell 407 helicopter at this small California airport. He's peering into every crevice, checking every button, pulling himself up in what looks like an impromptu workout, ensuring that all is in perfect working order. He does not have someone else do the pre-flight check—he does it himself.
An hour later, he is flying me through the air, and we are being buffeted by the wind high above the Malibu coastline.
"You okay?" he says into the tiny microphone attached to the compulsory headset. ...

Movie Monday - January 11 - 707 Year One from Flightblogger by Jon Ostrower
Movie Monday returns this week with a stroll down nostalgia lane and a look at the first year of service for the Boeing 707 in 1959. 50 years after it was produced, we take for granted how jet travel transformed how quickly we can move across the planet. The narrator talks of the time between points shrinking by half, making cross-country commuting a reality to "be home by dinner" on the West Coast after having lunch in New York. An act that has become a regular part of our lives in 2010 was an unequivocal transformation in how people move by the beginning of 1960.
The video also covers the flight testing of the 707-320 Intercontinental and high-speed 720, as well as the MATS 707 tasked with transporting President Eisenhower overseas.
Unfortunately, the user who uploaded this series of videos disabled embedding so I cannot post them directly here on FlightBlogger. However, I have provided the links below in five 7-8 minute parts. Definitely worth taking the time to watch today. Enjoy!
