CAF’s Red, White & Loud To Take Part in “World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration”

MIDLAND, TEXAS (March 24, 2011) – The world’s only flight-worthy Boeing B-29 Superfortress FIFI, and country music star/patriot Aaron Tippin will take the CAF’s Red, White & Loud Tour to the “World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration,” EAA AirVenture July 25-31 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.

“We are thrilled to bring the CAF’s ‘Red, White & Loud Tour’ to EAA AirVenture. Country music star Aaron Tippin is a great supporter of our American troops and veterans, as well as the CAF and what we stand for, honoring American military aviation through flight, exhibition, and remembrance,” said Stephan Brown, CAF president/CEO. “Partnering with Aaron to create this tour has allowed the CAF to reach new audiences and we are excited to celebrate America’s freedom through song and the roaring radial engines of the world’s only flying B-29 at one of the greatest aviation events.”

On Saturday evening, July 30, Aaron will take to the stage for a unique performance of such songs as Where the Stars and Stripes and the Eagles Fly, Kiss This and You’ve Got to Stand for Something. The concert will precede the widely popular Night Air Show and Daher-Socata Fireworks, capping a day filled with memorable attractions.

“After four years and countless of hours of work on behalf of our volunteer-members, the CAF is proud to see FIFI return to the skies,” said Brown. “There is no other event better than AirVenture to celebrate the world’s only flyable B-29’s new lease on life. While the CAF has participated in AirVenture for many years, it is exciting for FIFI to return after more than 15 years away from one of the most popular and well-attended aviation events in the world.”

“The addition of the B-29 to the lineup at EAA AirVenture 2011 further solidifies Oshkosh as the greatest aviation gathering point in the world,” said Tom Poberezny, EAA and AirVenture chairman. “This legendary warbird represents the highest American bomber technology during World War II, and will be an integral piece of the festivities honoring those who served and sacrificed for the freedom we enjoy today.”

About the CAF’s B-29 Superfortress:
Late in 1974, the CAF's B-29 was christened FIFI and joined the other World War II fighters and bombers to preserve the memories and teach lessons of mankind's greatest war. In 2006, the B-29 was grounded by the CAF due to recurring engine trouble and after four grueling years of work by volunteer-members, FIFI returned to the skies in late 2010 with a new lease on life. She has been refitted with new custom built engines that are a combination of the R-3350-95W and R-3350-26WD engines. The re-engine project and subsequent return to flight is due in large part to the generosity of Jim Cavanaugh, founder of the Cavanaugh Flight Museum in Addison, Texas. World's only airworthy B-29 'Superfortress' returning to EAA AirVenture in 2011

WWII bomber back in air after restoration, making first Oshkosh visit since 1995

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wis. — (March 23, 2011) — Flying again following a four-year renovation, the world’s only airworthy Boeing B-29 “Superfortress,” FIFI, is scheduled to make a much-anticipated appearance at EAA AirVenture 2011 on July 25-31 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.

FIFI, which is owned by the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) and is a part of its B-29/B-24 Squadron based in Addison, Texas, will arrive Tuesday, July 26, and stay through the event’s duration – joining hundreds of other warbirds on display at the 59th annual Fly-In Convention, known as “The World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration.”

The Boeing B-29 “Superfortress,” one of the greatest airplanes during the World War II era, is scheduled to fly during the afternoon air show on Friday, July 29, as part of the day-long veterans salute. FIFI last appeared at AirVenture in 1995.

FIFI’s appearance also brings country music star and pilot Aaron Tippin to AirVenture 2011 for an evening concert on Saturday, July 30, as part of Commemorative Air Force’s “Red, White & Loud Tour.” The concert will precede the widely popular Night Air Show and Daher-Socata Fireworks, capping a day filled with memorable attractions. Tippin joins REO Speedwagon (Monday, July 25) and Gary Sinise & the Lt. Dan Band (Friday, July 29) as musical acts confirmed for AirVenture 2011.

Over the past four years, FIFI was refitted with custom-built engines – combining Wright R-3350-95W and R-3350-26WD powerplants – to replace the Wright R-3350-57AM engine in place since the early 1970s. The refit required reworking the engine mounts and some of the engine cowling. Mechanical difficulties prevented FIFI from making scheduled visits to AirVenture in 2005 and 2006.

The Boeing B-29 “Superfortress,” which was first flown in 1942 and began active service in 1944, is perhaps best known as the aircraft from which the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945. It was designed as a replacement for the older B-17s and B-24s, with longer range and greater bomb loads. The B-29 was also used in the Korean War in the early 1950s and was a staple of the U.S. Air Force until jet bombers began to appear in the late 1950s.

This particular B-29 was saved from use as a ground target for weapons tests in the 1960s and first flown by the CAF in 1971. The B-29 was christened FIFI in 1974 in honor of the wife of Col. Victor N. Agather, who had been on the wartime development team for the aircraft and had been personally committed and involved with the airplane’s restoration in the early 1970s.

Collecting, restoring and flying vintage historical aircraft for more than half a century, the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) ranks as one of the largest private air forces in the world. The CAF is dedicated to Honoring American Military Aviation through flight, exhibition and remembrance. A non-profit educational association, the CAF has more than 8,000 members and a fleet of more than 150 airplanes distributed throughout the country to 73 units located in 27 states for care and operation. For more information, visit www.commemorativeairforce.org or call (432) 563-1000.

CAF’s Red, White & Loud to Land at Legends Over the Colorado Fly-In

MIDLAND, TEXAS (March 10, 2011) – The Commemorative Air Force’s (CAF) Boeing B-29 Superfortress FIFI and country music star/patriot Aaron Tippin will land at the Legends Over the Colorado Fly-In on April 9-10 at Laughlin-Bullhead International Airport in Bullhead City, Arizona. The tour celebrates America’s freedom through song and the roaring radial engines of the world’s only flying B-29 Superfortress.

The CAF’s B-29 will arrive Thursday, April 7 to participate in the fly-in throughout the weekend. On Saturday, April 9 at 7 p.m., Aaron Tippin will take to the stage at the nearby Aquarius Casino Resort Outdoor Amphitheater for a unique performance of such songs as Where the Stars and Stripes and the Eagles Fly, You’ve Got to Stand for Something,
and Kiss This. The concert will begin with a fly-over of the CAF’s B-29 FIFI and other rare warbirds. Tickets are on sale now at www.aquariuscasinoresort.com

Rides will be available beginning the afternoon of Thurs., April 7, through Sun. April 10, and can be purchased in advance by visiting www.cafb29b24.org.

"In our second year of Legends Over the Colorado we have added some of the most historic aircraft of the World War II era. To be able to say that the only flying B-29 in the world will be attending is a benchmark to say the least! From there we have added a collection of planes to complement FIFI that could only be described as AMAZING! We have a TBM Avenger, a Supermarine Spitfire, an authentic Japanese Zero, a P-51 Mustang, and the Flying Formation group out of Arizona,” said James Templeton, General Manager of Landmark Aviation at Laughlin-Bullhead Airport. “The fact that FIFI is flying today along with these other aircraft rich in history is a testament to the dedication of all involved who strive to maintain public awareness and appreciation for our history, our veterans and the aircraft that made it possible for us to be where we are today."

“The Commemorative Air Force is unique, we aren’t like other museums,” said CAF President/CEO Stephan Brown. “We start our engines, we fly our airplanes and we get loud, taking history to the public, not waiting for them to come to us. The Red, White and Loud Tour is an exciting opportunity for the CAF to continue doing what we do best, educating and reminding Americans of the cost of our freedom.”

SAVE THE SKYRAIDER! from Parrothead Jeff by Parrothead Jeff
I apologize for not posting this the first time I saw it, but thankfully loyal reader and commenter Kath emailed it to me and reminded me about it.
Here's the basics of the story - An American purchased a vintage aircraft from an owner in France. This aircraft is an AD-4N Skyraider. Skyraiders flew in both Korea and Vietnam where they proved to be invaluable due to their long loiter time and ability to get low and bring the hurt to the enemy, especially when it came time to protect downed airmen so that they could be rescued.
This is not something abnormal. Warbirds may be expensive, but the ones owned by civilians are unarmed and as harmless to the general public as a Cessna or any other civil aircraft.
That didn't stop the Department of Homeland security from seizing this aircraft almost immediately after it arrived in the U.S. ...

Review: An Aviation Film That's NotJust an Aviation Film from Av8rdan's World of Flying by Dan Pimentel
At it's very core, Monika Petrillo's film Flyabout is aimed squarely at pilots. Come on, what aviator wouldn't want to ride along on a 30-day circumnavigation of Australia in a flight of GA planes, chasing dreams, making lifelong acquaintances, and possibly dodging a few wayward kangaroos?
In this documentary – which premiered at the super-cool SXSW Film Festival in Austin in 2006 – Petrillo is a freshly-minted 25-year-old VFR pilot who embarks on a dream flight of a lifetime around the entire Australian continent. It is a film about a journey any GA pilot would cherish, so let's look at the synopsis from the flyaboutmovie.com site: ...

DAGORED NEWS from http://www.dagored.org/
Dream Machines, the new owners of Dago Red, have asked pilot Dan Martin and Merlin engine builder Mike Barrow to do a “nose to tail” inspection of the aircraft. With their help and the very talented crew of Dago, various components are being repaired or replaced. There are also many “secret” improvements that should help her stay in the front of the pack at the races. In addition to all of this, there will be a new paint scheme returning Dago to the more classic look of past years. The entire crew is working extremely hard on the aircraft, with the sole goal of bringing home another unlimited gold championship trophy!

Save a life, get discounted admission to the Air Zoo from airzoo.org by jmaclean
Every two seconds someone needs a blood transfusion in the United States—Michigan hospital patients alone use 2,000 units a day. While 75 percent of the U.S. population will have received a blood transfusion by the age of 75, only five percent of the population donates. On Thursday, April 9 from 10:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. area residents can help alleviate the critical blood shortage by donating at the Air Zoo. In fact, in less than an hour, each blood donor could save as many as three lives. All blood donors must be 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and must have a photo ID or donor card present. It is not required that blood donors pay admission to the Air Zoo to donate blood that day. As an incentive, the Air Zoo will be giving those who donate during the Air Zoo’s blood drive a coupon good for up to $10 off admission. Volunteer blood donors are the only source of blood products for hospital patients in the United States. For more information about donating blood, please visit
www.redcross.org or call 1.800.GIVE.LIFE. For more information about the Air Zoo, please call 269.382.6555.

Almost 40 Years Later The BD-5 Still Looks Hot! from Airpigz Blog by Martt Clupper
I was a solid "A-" student in my school days, and I even got accepted to Purdue in engineering (but bailed at the last minute to become an airport bum instead). But I did get one "D" in my 8th grade history class. I bring this up cuz it strikes me funny that now that I'm an old crusty adult, I'm pretty much fascinated with most all things historical…

Fly with the brothers from AOPA Pilot Blog: Reporting Points by Ian Twombly
The footage below is certainly something I've never seen, and I would venture to say 99 percent of other pilots haven't either. It dates back to 1909 when the Wright brothers did a demonstration in Italy. And while the Wrights had done this type of thing before in front of video cameras, the hosting Web site claims it's the first ever on-board aerial footage, and it's cool!
More than anything, I was struck at the pitch instability the aircraft possessed. Something tells me I would have been a goner had I flown that thing. ...

Dago Red in wrecked condtion before being rebuilt - from www.aafo.com
On their website, there is a picture of Dago Red after it had crashed in 1970 and before it was rebuilt as Dago Red. Hard to believe it would be repaired in the condition it was in after being wrecked. Look at the chains that are being used to hold it down to the trailer. Those same chain tie downs are used to hold down wrecked/destroyed cars as they are being driven on flatbed trucks to the scrap metal yard. ...

Gatow Air Museum, Germany. from avimuseumzone by WireFox
If your in Berlin, say for the ILA or visiting. Think about another aviation museum just on the outskirts of the City, in the form of the German Air Force Museum at Gatow. Once pre-war the opposite version of RAF Collage Cranwell, Gatow was the place for up and coming German 'Aces' in that, here is where they ended up. Gatow has however seen H.P Hastings, Tempests and many other types over the years, use this once busy airfield. Now home to the museum there, it once again becomes alive. I and Herbert Watson of Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust, went there during our visit to the 2008 ILA. They have more or less everything 'Cold War' to see. Along with Me 163, 109, Fokker D7 right through to the Fulcrum. Free admission again at this museum, although they are pleased to except donation money from visitors, as it all helps keeping this fine, clean and tidy well stocked museum going. ...
