It entered service with the carrier in 1968. Still in production, over 8,000 of all versions have been ordered with over 6,200 being built. About 1,250 737s are in the air at any time. A 737 takes off somewhere in the world every 5 seconds. The 737 fleet has flown about 296 million hours in revenue service, travelling 75 billion nautical miles in 232 million flights…

Aviation Trivia of the Day by JP Santiago | At the time of Project Mercury, the Atlas as a launch system had a reliability rating of 90%, while acceptable for a weapons system, was unsuitable for a manned rocket launch vehicle. As a result, a whole series of initiatives under the umbrella of what was called the Pilot Safety Program was put into place to improve not just the reliability of the Atlas rocket for Project Mercury, but also to improve its safety.
