Airshows Review: Rhode Island National Guard Open House June 27-28

Rhode Island National Guard Open House June 27-28

Location: Air National Guard Base, Quonset, Rhode Island

Admission: FREE

Parking: A $10 donation is requested to benefit the Hasbro Children’s Hospital

Value: Very Good

One of the best organized shows we have been to in some time. Traffic flows were well managed. Gallery location on the flight line provided excellent photo opportunities with take off from north to south and landing south to north as there was a 10 knot quartering wind. The taxi way was between the gallery and the runway so there were excellent close up opportunities as the aircraft taxied by. 400mm was more than enough lens although there were photographers around with 500mm. Heat haze was a problem at this focal length.

Static displays were numerous and varied included the B-1 Lancer and CV-22A Osprey. All performers seemed fired up and on their game. We have seen the Blue Angels perform many times but they were particularly fired up at this show. Sadly, there was no JATO for Fat Albert.

The Canadian Snowbirds gave a wonderfully graceful performance. The show also included the Oracle Challenger flying acrobatics around the Black Dagger Team as it descended. The show provides an excellent outing for the family as there are many amusements on the site to keep the young ones entertained. Food service was plentiful and not overly expensive. Sanitation facilities were plentiful, clean and well dispersed.

Over all I would definitely put this show on your calendar for next year!

Aircraft/Performers Presented:
Blue Angels
Snowbirds from Canada
F-16 Demo Team
F-22 Raptor Demo Team
Black Daggers U.S. Army Special Operations Command Parachute Team
P-51 Mustangs of the The Horsemen
Michael Gullian
John Klatt
Ed Hamill
East Coast L-39C DEmo Team
Static included the B-1 Lancer
and many others.

Jacqueline Cochran doc at YouTube from You Fly, Girl by Cathy Gale
Produced by high school students, it's worth watching, at 9 minutes long. Lots of photos, etc. as well as a bref summary of her life.
I don't know if I'd call her "America's original fly girl" as the narrator does. She'd be "America's first supersonic woman" perhaps...something like that...

National Museum of the U.S. Air Force wins Air Force Heritage Award from National Museum of the USAF Top Stories
The National Museum of the United States Air Force was recently recognized with the 2009 Air Force Heritage Award by the USAF History and Museums Program for its "Warrior Airmen" exhibit.
Opened in December of 2008, the exhibit informs the Air Force and the public about the dangerous missions performed by USAF Airmen in Afghanistan and Iraq. Separated into three sections, the exhibit focuses on the efforts of the USAF Airmen -- both ground and aircrew -- who play an active and essential role in combat operations in the Global War on Terror. Made possible through uniforms, items and photos donated by Airmen who served in either Iraq or Afghanistan, the exhibit includes three dioramas with fully dressed and equipped mannequins, an audiovisual presentation on a 15-foot wide screen, and compelling firsthand accounts. Also incorporated in the exhibit is the recently acquired MH-53M helicopter, which saw 38 years of extensive service in Vietnam, Operation Desert Storm, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The MH-53M is accompanied by interactive touch screens never before used by the museum.

The Seaplane Rating from Let's Go Flying by Steve Tupper
It's been something like 18 months since I completed what I consider to be my "core" training. By that, I mean the private pilot certificate and the instrument rating. The certificate and rating that make aviation practical and fun and give you the best initial set of capabilities.
Since then, I've decided to seek new opportunities and just have a bunch of fun. Part of that journey has been to figure out just how high, wide, and deep aviation is and figure out how much there is to explore. And, man, what a lot of ground there is to cover!

Atlantis Enjoys California Weather :) from How I Am Becoming An Astronaut by Damaris B. Sarria
So here we are at Edwards Air Force Base! The weather is amazing in California. The 1st picture shows the Mate-Demate Device (MDD) structure that is similar to the one at Kennedy Space Center. The structure helps workers access areas of the orbiter and also help mount and unmount the Orbiter to the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (a modified 747). The 2nd picture is of Atlantis' lower surface. And lastly there is the 747 that will help carry Atlantis back to KSC!

Brazilian RC helicopter cellphone delivery service busted from Engadget by Tim Stevens
What do you do when your cellphone-smuggling carrier pigeons get caught on their way to the big house? Why, you go higher tech, of course. Those texting-crazed Brazlian ultra-max prisoners hatched a new plot to fly a radio controlled helicopter up over the wall of a prison, dropping diaper-swaddled handsets into the awaiting hands of criminal non-masterminds on the inside. Unfortunately for them, police foiled the plan when they pulled over the accomplices on the outside, confiscating the chopper, a suite of phones, and arresting the four who were paid just $5,000 to get the plan airborne. Our suggestion for their next attempt? Jetpacks.
