U.S. Team Missing In Balloon Race from AVwebFlash Current Issue
American gas-balloon pilots Richard Abruzzo and Carol Rymer Davis have been reported missing over the Adriatic Sea, between Italy and Croatia. Thunderstorms were reported in the area. The two pilots are competing in the annual Gordon Bennett International Gas Balloon Race, which launched from southern England on Saturday night. As of Wednesday morning all the other 19 teams have landed safely, but ground crews have lost contact with Abruzzo and Rymer Davis. "The Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre have initiated an operation with a helicopter and fast boat, although no ELT activation has been detected so far," race director Don Cameron said in a statement. "The Croatian authorities and all shipping have been informed. We are very concerned, but can only wait for news now." ...

Two balloonists taking part in the Gordon Bennett Cup race are missing in thunderstorms over the Adriatic.
The Italian coastguard said boats would continue to search for them through the night but aircraft would have to stop at 1900 BST when it got dark.
