Pilot sets new, unofficial speed record in Thermal - The Desert Sun
Pilot Richard “Smokey” Young set a world record Saturday — at least preliminarily.
Attempting to establish a new 100-kilometer — 62 miles — closed-course speed record for a piston-engine aircraft weighing between 660 and 1,320 pounds at the Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport in Thermal, the pilot surpassed the existing record with a top speed for the day of 260 mph, officials said.
In the existing 2004 world record, set by former astronaut Robert “Hoot” Gibson for the fastest flight over a closed course, a plane traveled 233 mph, according to the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale in Switzerland, which will have to finalize Saturday's results and confirm Young has bested the previous record.

On Saturday, September 11th, 2010, Scott Air Force Base in Illinois held it’s annual air show…well, it should be called an air SPECTACULAR.
The highlight was the Blue Angels. After a A-10 Warthog got a flat on the runway, (can you imagine changing that? Jeez.) the Blue Angels took flight.
Here are some videos clips of the air show. ...

wings over PITTSBURGH air show by DAWN RENEE
This weekend, I attended my first air show.  Being a nature *slash* still life *slash* portrait photographer, I found myself quite challenged photographing high-speed moving objects.  Being a fine art photographer, I found myself constantly looking for the beauty in the day’s subject matter.  I would label it as an exhilarating yet frustrating day for me.  A few times, I reverted to capturing a few candid shots while I stood amongst the crowd which satisfied the photographer side of me.  Not to mention, I fell in love with the ...

Pedal Jam May Have Caused Cruse Crash from AVwebFlash Current Issue
A rudder pedal jam may have led to the fatal crash of former U.S. Aerobatics Champion Vicki Cruse during qualifying for the world championships in England last year. The British Air Accidents Investigations Branch says it also can't rule out pilot incapacitation as a contributing factor in the accident. The AAIB report (PDF) says Cruse added rudder pedal extensions to the Edge 540 she was borrowing for the competition. A post-crash examination revealed that the left extension could have ended up in a position that would have prevented the pilot from fully removing left rudder once it had been applied. ...

Forgotten record of aviatrix Beryl Markham - BBC
On 4 September 1936 Beryl Markham departed from Abingdon Airfield in her Vega Gull airplane, The Messenger.
Her aim was to be the first person to make a solo, non-stop, transatlantic flight, east to west.
Headwinds made Markham's mission harder than the eastbound route taken by Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart.
Markham's destination was New York, but she crash-landed in a peat bog in Nova Scotia. Yet she survived and her dream to cross the Atlantic had come true. ...

Kacy J's from The PapaGolf Chronicles
The MERFI fly-in was this weekend over in Urbana. I went last year, but this year I decided to find something else to do. I'm getting more and more afraid of things that I used to do without a second thought, much like Brave Sir Hogarth is as he too advances in age. For him, the new thing is the child gate that we've been using to restrict the movements of the as yet not-proven-worthy-of-trust Puppy Cabot. Hogarth won't go near it. For me, it's large groups of planes converging on uncontrolled airports. Besides that, there's very little there to attract me. Last year it was nice to go over and meet the guy that built my airplane, and this year it would have been fun to visit Lynda at her Girls With Wings booth, but it's getting late in the year and I still had not made it to Kacy J's, the new restaurant at the airport in Muncie, Indiana. ...

She Had a Dream: Mae C. Jemison, First African American Woman in Space
from AirSpace by The National Air and Space Museum
Have you ever had a dream of what you wanted to do in life? How about a wish that you hoped every day would come true?  Were you ever truly inspired by something or someone at an early age that shaped the course of your life? Living a lifelong dream does not come to many, but for Dr. Mae Jemison, space travel was always an area of fascination. Space travel was her aspiration from an early age, and together with inspiration from astronaut predecessors Guy Bluford, Jr. and Sally Ride, Jemison not only achieved her goal of flying in space, but also did so as the first African American woman on September 12, 1992. ...
