Glacier Girl Still Holds Oldest Title - knoxnews.com
Sorry to burst the P-38 bubble in Wales, but even though it is an astounding find, it is not the oldest P-38 Lightning built by Lockheed in the World War II years.
That distinction is still held by Glacier Girl, according to Bob Cardin, a historic airplane expert, who was in on the discovery and recovery of the famed aircraft. Cardin is also director of War Bird operations for Rod Lewis in San Antonio, the wealthy oilman who purchased Glacier Girl after former owner J. Roy Shoffner's death.
Shoffner of Harrogate is the entrepreneur who restored Glacier Girl in the Middlesboro, Ky., Municipal Airport. Shoffner died two years ago. ...

Alaska bishop's historic airplane finds new home from Diamond Pilots
In the Episcopal Church, the late Bill Gordon is probably best known as the church's youngest bishop.
In Alaska, he's best known as a pilot.
The second plane of Gordon's, aka "The Flying Bishop," is being hung for display next week in the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center in downtown Fairbanks.
The yellow Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser with brown trim has a 35 1/2-foot wingspan and room for a pilot and two passengers.
The visitors center does not have an entrance large enough for the plane to fit through, so the aircraft had to be dismantled into three pieces — the fuselage and wings — and reassembled inside the building. ...

Check out the Miramar Air Show from AOPA Pilot Blog
We've got a fun video featuring the great Sean D. Tucker at the Miramar Air Show in San Diego earlier this year. It was produced by Oceans Aloft, a company run by Natasha Stenbock and Eddie Kisfaludy of San Diego. They are new-found friends of AOPA, having helped us with an aerial photo platform for my January article on the Cessna SkyCatcher. They are passionate aviators and just passionate in general–they are getting married. Natasha is a former television reporter while Eddie is an ocean researcher with considerable video editing skills–as you'll see.

DAYTON — Aviation Trail Inc., a nonprofit group dedicated to preservation of the region's aviation heritage, said it is to receive $95,000 in federal economic stimulus money for exhibit upgrades and equipment in the organization's nearly completed museum that chronicles the history of parachuting and its experts.
The ATI Parachute Museum opened in 2003. It is located on the second floor of the organization's headquarters building at 16 S. Williams St., Dayton.
Aviation Trail plans to use the funding to develop displays on packing a parachute, and contributions of parachute experts who came to the United States from Germany during and after World War II. The organization also will revise an exhibit about McCook Field, the early aviation site that once existed in Dayton. ...

Free Aviation book indexes to download from You Fly, Girl by Cathy Gale
Non-fiction books require indexes, but many books don't have them. (Usually people's memoirs - just the type of books that do need indexes!) When it comes to aviation books, I take care of this by doing indexes myself, and uploading them so others can get the benefit from them.

Video: Pilot Takes To Skies To Help Sick Patient from Diamond Pilots
When it comes to some local pilots helping sick patients get to their doctor's appointments or surgeries, the sky's the limit.
Celeste Puentes of East Bakersfield may seem like a healthy 21-year-old, but six years ago she was on the verge of death. She lay in a coma for more than a month after her kidneys suddenly shut down.
"You know, when you're 14 you want to go out and have fun with your friends, but you can't because you have to be in dialysis in your house. It's sad," said Puentes.
In 2005 she received a kidney transplant. A child born to fieldworker parents, she cannot afford to get to Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto for her appointments. But Thursday she had a biopsy appointment she couldn't miss. ...
