THUNDERBIRDS SELECT NEW TEAM MEMBERS FOR 2012-2013 - ICAS Fast Facts | Major/Lieutenant Colonel-select Greg Moseley has been named as commander and leader of the U.S.A.F. Thunderbirds for the 2012 and 2013 air show seasons. Currently stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Moseley will replace current team lead, Lieutenant Colonel Case Cunningham, at the conclusion of the 2011 air show season.   The Air Force also announced that Major Caroline Jensen, currently serving as a T-38 instructor pilot at Sheppard Air Force Base, will join the team as Thunderbird Number 3, the team’s right wing pilot. Captain Blaine Jones, an F-22 pilot currently stationed at Langley AFB, will become Thunderbird Number 6, the team’s opposing solo pilot. Captain Michael Fisher, an F-16 pilot currently stationed at Luke AFB, will become Thunderbird Number 8, the team's advance pilot and narrator.

ACC INITIATES AIR SHOW COST CUTTING POLICY - ICAS Fast Facts | Effective immediately, U.S. Air Force single ship demonstrations at air shows and open houses will be limited to one team per weekend to help reduce spending during a period of increased operations tempo for the Air Force (e.g. support for operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya). According to a statement issued by U.S. Air Force Air Combat Command, air shows that previously had two demo teams scheduled to appear will have one team removed from the schedule and no new shows will be added. This action will remain in effect until further notice.

Lecture and Book Signing with U.S. Vietnam War Veteran and Former Vietnamese Foe on March 19

Two Vietnam War fighter pilots who once flew combat against each other, will lecture at the Museum on Saturday, March 19 at 2 p.m. While serving as a U.S. Air Force pilot in Vietnam during 1972, then-Maj. Dan Cherry shot down a North Vietnamese MiG-21, and saw the plane's pilot, Nguyen Hong My, bail out. He did not learn of the Hong My's fate until they happened to meet 36 years later. The two men became friends. Both will share stories about their war experiences and the events that led to this remarkable friendship. They also will sign copies of Cherry's book, "My Enemy, My Friend - A Story of Reconciliation from the Vietnam War," following the lecture.  Fashion in flight... on Sunday, March 20, join Museum docents for a Tip-to-Tail Tour of the Style in the Aisle exhibit. Students with an interest in and commitment to the arts, sciences, and humanities as it pertains to Latino communities and cultures are selected to travel to Washington, D.C. for a week-long, leadership development seminar at the Smithsonian Institution. The seminar encourages youth to explore and understand Latino identity and embrace their own cultural heritage through visits to the Smithsonian's Latino collections and one-on-one interaction with anthropologists, artists, curators, historians, scientists and other museum professionals. Following the training seminar, students participate in a four-week interdisciplinary education internship in museums and other cultural institutions in their local communities, including Smithsonian-affiliated organizations. In the 1970′s, there was a dubious flirtation with VTOL jet fighters for US Navy use. VTOL fighters would, theoreticaly, allow smaller ships to carry jet fighters, and could allow the cash-strapped Navy to weild decent air power without having to have a number of giant supercarriers. As it turned out, the whole idea fell flat.
But while it was ongoing, one proposed mode of VTOL operations was VATOL, for Vertical Attitude Take Off and Landing. In other words, tailsitters. Most of the designs were not tailsitters in the way that the Convair Pogo was… more in the way the Ryan X-13 was. They would not land tail-first on a  horizontal platform, but belly-first on a vertical platform. This way the platform could be hung over the side of the ship, permitting both easy rotation to horizontal for servicing while avoiding issues associated with a jet engine blasting directly onto a deck. ...

The latest entry in the electric plane sweepstakes, the Elektra One by PC-Aero of Germany, is nearing first flight and the single-seat composite could be the first of several models to be produced by the company. The company says the Elektra One will have a maximum battery endurance of three hours on its 21-horsepower motor. The company is predicting a top speed of more than 100 mph and planning the first flight for early February.
