Don Hatcher, 49, of Bonifay arrived at Pensacola Naval Air Station when the gates opened. He spent this morning checking out some of the aircraft on display.
Hundreds of people are already milling around this morning, looking at airplane displays and settling in to watch opening ceremonies before the Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show.
Lines are pretty long for a chance to peek inside the Blues' F/A-18 Hornets.
But traffic is still easy to navigate around Pensacola Naval Air Station, and shuttles are set up to take visitors from the parking lot to the show at Forrest Sherman Field.
The Blues are set to fly at about 2 p.m. today.

I love flying out of Van Nuys Airport. I know I've said that before, but it can never be said enough. Just the other day while out on the ramp with our helicopters the group of T6's took flight, and before that a group of Gulfstreams and LearJets and Hawkers and others all seemed to take flight one after another. Then the cool vintage military jets, the aerobatic planes, etc. There was a sea plane I had never seen before take off on 16R. So many cool planes every day taking flight out of VNY, not to mention a group of 4 national guard Blackhawks that were here the other day as well. I love VNY!

Between 1942 and 1944, 331 and 332 Norwegian Squadrons operated Spitfires from what was then RAF North Weald. In 2009, the Royal Norwegian Air Force celebrated their 65th anniversary and to mark the occasion, 331 and 332 Squadrons past and present were represented when they returned to their former wartime home in Essex for a community fly-in event, held on the September 13th. Arriving on the Friday prior were a pair of 132 Wing F-16BMs, and more significantly, a RNoAF Falcon 20, which brought six Norwegian veterans back to North Weald, to make an emotional return to the airfield from which they flew combat missions during the war. The day was a mixture of commemoration and celebration, with a wreath laid at the airfield memorial in honour of the thirty-six Norwegian pilots who were killed flying from the airfield during the Second World War. The friendship between North Weald Basset and the Norwegian city of Bodø, the current base of 331 and 332 squadrons, was celebrated.

The newly-opened Whatcom County Airfield/Bellingham Airdrome was active with civilians on that fateful day... and all likely listened with disbelief as news of the attack on Pearl Harbor played over their car radios. What did this mean for the Country? What did this mean for a town like Bellingham, perched on the edge of the Pacific's sheltered in-land waters? What lurked off the coast, waiting to strike?
Though the events of December 7th came as a shock, the possibility that America would ultimate engage in WWII likely came as little surprise to most. Since the conception of the Bellingham airport project before 1936, the Army Air Corps had been lobbying hard for an airfield in such a strategic position. And our research indicates that the final push to finish the first runway after 4 long years of stopping and starting, came as a result of War Department funding. Simultaneously, in other parts of the country, a handful of pursuit squadrons were being made 'battle ready'... and it was one of these, the 39th Pursuit Squadron, that arrived in Bellingham a mere three days after Pearl Harbor.
We have been in contact with one of the pilots of the 39th, and he has very graciously shared his memories of those days with us. ...

Dealing with the Italian airshows, the 10 aircraft of the Frecce Display Team, will attend the 50th Anniversary of the AWTI (Air Weapons Training Installation) at Decimomannu airbase on Sept. 25 and the airshow for the 100th Anniversary of the first flight in Cameri on Oct. 4.
As usual, the Frecce's display season will begin on May 1 at the team's homebase, Rivolto, in North East Italy. That is the base where the 313° Gruppo Addestramento Acrobatico trains during the "Winter" season, the period of the year which goes from the end of November to May 1st. ...

The Algerian Air Force will make its Royal International Air Tattoo debut this summer – bringing to 51 the number of countries that have taken part in the Cotswold airshow since it was first held in 1971.
Securing a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft from Algeria is a coup for the Air Tattoo as it is rare for aircraft from Africa to take part in UK airshows. From the continent, only South Africa and Morocco have sent aircraft in the past.
Rob Windsor, the Air Tattoo's Head of Aircraft Operations, said Algeria's participation reflected the excellent reputation the airshow has built up over the years around the world. F-106 (58-0787) is the famous "Cornfield Bomber". In 1970, while assigned to the 71st FIS at Malmstrom AFB, Montana, its pilot ejected during an inflight emergency. The pilot somehow got himself into a flat spin -- this is generally considered unrecoverable in an F-106 and the book says to get out. After the pilot did just that, 58-0787 recovered itself from this unrecoverable position. In a vain attempt to recover, the pilot had trimmed it to takeoff trim and engine throttle back. ...

The closest most of us 'round here will ever get to outer space is blogging about the Lunar X Prize, so our inner astronauts get rather giddy any time an amateur makes it to the cusp of the gravity well. The above photos were taken by the Meteotek team, a teacher and his four students from the IES La Bisbal school in Catalonia, Spain. The group designed and launched a balloon kitted out with a Nikon Coolpix and custom built electronics, intending to get some shots at 30,000 feet. Well exceeding their expectations, the $80 digicam (held aloft by a $60 latex balloon) reached over 100,000 feet, at which point it lost inflation and fell to the earth. As the balloon rose, the team was able to map its progress using Google Earth via the craft's on-board radio receiver. After it fell back to earth, the group "travelled 10km to find the sensors and photographic card," said one of the students, "which was still emitting its signal, even though it had been exposed to the most extreme conditions."
