Veterans recall Pearl Harbor attack 68 years later by Diamond Pilots
Richard P. McElveen was only 4 years old when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
But McElveen, who lived with his family on Pearl Harbor at the time, will never forget the surprise attack, which killed 2,403 Americans, destroyed or damaged 21 ships and 347 planes and pushed the U.S. into World War II. Monday is the 68th anniversary of the attack.
His dad, Richard Charles McElveen, was assigned to the Navy radio station as a corpsman and medic. That morning, the younger McElveen was outside playing when he saw planes and smoke in the sky.
He went inside to tell his mother. But she said it was only the Navy burning trash, which happened every Sunday. Then, a sailor in a Jeep pulled up and yelled at his mom to get the elder McElveen out of bed.
"The Japs are bombing Pearl Harbor," the sailor shouted.
McElveen didn't believe his wife when she told him the news. But a loud explosion soon after convinced him. ...

Speeches and flyovers to mark remembrance of Pearl Harbor by Diamond Pilots
The Lake Norconian Club Foundation will host its annual memorial event for Pearl Harbor Day at 10 a.m. Monday.
The theme this year is "A Simple Welcome Home" and will be a morning of remembrance and honor for those who have served in any branch of service.
Navy spokesman Gregg Smith said he expects 200 to 400 people to attend, including World War II veterans.
