Red Bull Air Racing Coverage - 09-May-09

Since there is so much going on this weekend in the aerotainment realm, we've broken out the Red Bull Air Race news we've gathered for today (to this point) in a separate post

from Red Bull Air Race News

OLD FRIEND DROPS IN ON HALL
Former Top Gun Matt Hall was treated to a blast from the past when a US Navy F-18 fighter jet landed at the Red Bull Air Race Airport during Friday’s cancelled training sessions. The ‘Hornet’ military jet dwarfed Hall’s new weapon of choice, the MXS-R, as the two sat on the ground together but Hall was pleased to be reacquainted with his old steed.

CLANDESTINE ACTIVITIES CAUSING FRICTION AMONG PILOTS
Don’t invite Dennis Sawyer and Hannes Arch to the same party. The veteran American technician, who helped rookie Matt Hall get a stunning fifth place in his very first race in Abu Dhabi recently after being an instrumental part of Mike Mangold's 2007 Red Bull Air Race World Championship, thinks that the Austrian ace has become the most secretive pilot in the race and now even assembles his plane under a shroud of secrecy.

RAPID MOD REVERSAL FOR GOULIAN
US pilot Michael Goulian has had a rollercoaster start to the 2009 Red Bull Air Race World Championship with a costly and theoretically revolutionary mod going disastrously wrong in the first round of the championship. Goulian has managed to reverse the work in time for his home round this weekend in San Diego and is hoping the amazing effort has not been in vain.

THE AMERICAN RACE DIRECTOR
Jim DiMatteo, the first American race director of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship, made a flawless debut atop the control tower at the 2009 season opener in Abu Dhabi last month but the 46-year-old Californian native can hardly wait for his second race this weekend – in his adopted home town of San Diego.
