Adilson Kindlemann's Red Bull Crash Escape from AVwebFlash Current Issue
Adilson Kindlemann's crash during a Red Bull Air Race practice session in Perth, Thursday, was the first in the race's history, but not the first time Kindlemann (or other racers) had found himself upside down strapped to a chair under water. Red Bull Air Race pilots train for emergencies like what Kindlemann experienced in the Swan River, and each one flies with an oxygen bottle in the cockpit. This year, training on how to use the bottle and escape an inverted flooded cockpit was provided at Perth, Australia, prior to the race (Kindlemann's crash race) there. According to Kindlemann's own words, reported Friday by Red Bull, he used the training to stay calm, open the canopy, use the air bottle, and initiate his escape. Red Bull rescue team members reached Kindlemann's inverted plane in less than one minute and were there to help pull him free.

Rules will be strictly enforced, race officials remind Red Bull Air Race pilots from www.redbullairrace.com
Uncompromising enforcement of the Red Bull Air Race rulebook might have upset some of the pilots in the first race of the season in Abu Dhabi but top race officials said there would be no turning back on their goal to make sure the regulations are applied as uniformly and consistently as possible this year after.   Drew Searle, the race director in Perth and Jimmy DiMatteo, who was the race director in Abu Dhabi, said there has been an unwavering commitment this season to improve the officiating after acknowledging ...

Red Bull Air Racing Coverage - 09-May-09

Since there is so much going on this weekend in the aerotainment realm, we've broken out the Red Bull Air Race news we've gathered for today (to this point) in a separate post

from Red Bull Air Race News

OLD FRIEND DROPS IN ON HALL
Former Top Gun Matt Hall was treated to a blast from the past when a US Navy F-18 fighter jet landed at the Red Bull Air Race Airport during Friday’s cancelled training sessions. The ‘Hornet’ military jet dwarfed Hall’s new weapon of choice, the MXS-R, as the two sat on the ground together but Hall was pleased to be reacquainted with his old steed.

CLANDESTINE ACTIVITIES CAUSING FRICTION AMONG PILOTS
Don’t invite Dennis Sawyer and Hannes Arch to the same party. The veteran American technician, who helped rookie Matt Hall get a stunning fifth place in his very first race in Abu Dhabi recently after being an instrumental part of Mike Mangold's 2007 Red Bull Air Race World Championship, thinks that the Austrian ace has become the most secretive pilot in the race and now even assembles his plane under a shroud of secrecy.

RAPID MOD REVERSAL FOR GOULIAN
US pilot Michael Goulian has had a rollercoaster start to the 2009 Red Bull Air Race World Championship with a costly and theoretically revolutionary mod going disastrously wrong in the first round of the championship. Goulian has managed to reverse the work in time for his home round this weekend in San Diego and is hoping the amazing effort has not been in vain.

THE AMERICAN RACE DIRECTOR
Jim DiMatteo, the first American race director of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship, made a flawless debut atop the control tower at the 2009 season opener in Abu Dhabi last month but the 46-year-old Californian native can hardly wait for his second race this weekend – in his adopted home town of San Diego.

Teamwork ensures Thunderbirds performance from Air Force Link Top Stories
Airmen from three commands came together to prepare the Thunderbirds F-16 Fighting Falcons in time for the Keesler Air Force Base airshow April 4 after inclement weather damaged five of the aircraft's noses.
The damage from the weather occurred as the Thunderbirds arrived for the airshow and was limited to the red cones called radar domes, or "radome," at the nose of the aircraft. Air Combat Command, Air Education and Training Command, and Air Force Materiel Command Airmen worked together to replace the cones, which are structural, weather proof enclosures that protect the F-16s' radar antenna from environmental conditions.

Movie Monday - April 6 - Coast Guard Aviation from Flightblogger by Jon Ostrower
Today's Movie Monday is a documentary on Coast Guard aircraft and the incredible missions they undertake, putting themselves in harms way to rescue those in need. The footage is really amazing, though the narration is somewhat dry (also, sorry for the time code).
You'll see the impressive performance and capabilities of Coast Guard helicopters like the HH-60 Jayhawk and HH-65 Dauphin. The Dauphin in particular can frequently be seen in the skies over Washington as several are stationed at the south end of Washington National Airport. I often spot the bright red Dauphin zipping along just above the surface of the Potomac river. Quite a sight indeed. Enjoy.
