NASCAR driver gets flight of life from Air Force Link Top Stories
NASCAR driver Reed Sorenson got the ride of his life in an F-15 Eagle as part of the Air Force's new partnership with Richard Petty Motorsports Jan. 23 at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla.
The incentive flight piloted by Capt. Dustin Ripley of the 95th Fighter Squadron was part of an effort by Air Force Recruiting Service to prepare Mr. Sorenson for the 2009 NASCAR season and educate him on what it really means to be an Airman.
"Taking a ride in an Air Force jet is unlike any training I've done for NASCAR," Mr. Sorenson said. "I have great respect for the Air Force, and I'm honored to represent them in the No. 43 car." ...

100 and counting - so here is a WW2 classic to celebrate with! from Shortfinals's Blog by shortfinals
Amazingly, I seem to have been around the circuit 100 times now - this is my 100th post - and so I could hardly be described as being on short finals anymore. Perhaps I should rename this thing 'circuits and bumps'? Anyway, to mark this semi-auspicious landmark, I have chosen something used for 'circuits and bumps', the beautiful Miles M-14A Magister (ex Miles Hawk Trainer III). Developed from the Miles Trainer, and Miles Hawk Major (both used by the Royal Air Force), this handsome aircraft was used in numbers by the RAF from 1937, and was an ideal 'lead-in' to the world of the Hurricane and Spitfire, aircraft which many of their pilots would soon use in the Battle of Britain. Over 1,200 Magisters had been built by the time British production finally ceased in 1941. ...

A striking Chief…… from Shortfinals's Blog by shortfinals
The Aeronca Aircraft Corporation (formerly the Aeronautical Corporation of America) was highly successful in producing light aircraft. From 1928 to 1951, they built over 11,000 of them usually in a two-seat configuration. The Second World War saw literally hundreds of O-58 Defenders/L-3's built, but none actually saw service with US forces abroad; they were, instead, used to train pilots and artilliery observers in the 'Zone of the Interior' as it was known. ...

Yes, I know, I know, it's ANOTHER An-2……. from Shortfinals's Blog by shortfinals
I may have said this before but I REALLY like the An-2. The 'Anushka' is big, bold and burly….and makes a statement on the flightline. Thanks to the German Air Force, who declined this PZL-built former LSK (Luftstreitkrafte) East German machine (LSK-440), it came onto the open market. Here seen in the markings of 'Aero Troika' on the flightline at GVFWE Abingdon, it is now operated by Flight Training Cologne, and gives pleasure flights, mostly operating out of its home base. This An-2T (nicknamed 'Anna') was not built - at Mielec in Poland - to any agreed international civilian standard, so the CAA would have a problem with allowing that kind of operation in the UK. ...
