F-22 wows Chile air show from The DEW Line
The US Air Force dispatched the F-22 earlier this week to the Chilean air show FIDAE. I normally look for hidden agendas as the F-22 trots around the globe -- ie, is the Dubai appearance a show of force to Iran? Is the Paris no-show a political snub? Etc. But I think the Santiago show is a case where the official pretext overwhelms any unofficial subtext, if you will. So just sit back, relax and enjoy the show! Thanks to williamacro for posting video on YouTube.

Airshow horror: RMAF to conduct thorough probe (Update) from thestar.com.my
The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) will carry out a thorough investigation to determine whether engine failure or human error was the cause of the fatal accident involving its Pilatus PC-7 MK II aircraft during an airshow in Kedah.
Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Latif Ahmad said he did not want to jump the gun and speculate on the cause of the accident despite an amateur recording of it posted on YouTube showed a small explosion occurring before the pilot ejected from the plane.
"The investigation will be carried out by the RMAF's Board of Investigation in a professional manner to determine whether the incident was due to engine failure or human error," he told reporters after presenting a haemodialysis machine to the Terendak Army Camp Hospital here Friday. ...

The B-25: Always a Good Show from AviationBull
From a purely aviation operations perspective, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was a masterpiece of planning and execution. The retaliatory Doolittle Raid was perhaps less impressive planning and more an awesome display of guts and innovation. I have a special place in my heart for the Raiders, especially those of the 34th Bomb Squadron. As such, I always love to watch B-25s fly. ...

LAX Police Create Honor Guard for Fallen Soldiers from Things with Wings
Late one night, I had a bout of insomnia, and found myself channel surfing.  I happened to come across the HBO movie "Taking Chance," the story of a Marine officer escorting the remains of Lance Cpl. Chance Phelps home to Dubois, Wyoming.  I am an Air Force brat, the daughter and granddaughter of officers, so I always have a warm spot in my heart for all things military.
As I took a spin through my Google reader, I saw this story -- "Airport Police officer commended for creating honor guard for return of fallen soldiers' remains" -- in the The Argonaut.   Airport Police officer Thomas Dye created a unit of his fellow officers, the Los Angeles Airport Police Honor Guard Detail, where they stand in  ...

Furias on track - Aviation Airshow Air Race Photography Discussion
from http://www.aafo.com/ | Hey there race fans. I thought I would drop in and give a Furias update. All is well and proceeding at light speed. We swung the gear and flaps Thursday. Everything worked great. Cock-pit is going back together with new race canopy. Wiring is in full swing with engine delivery right around the corner. Outer wing panels are on and tanks are fabricated and ready to install. Tail cone fabrication is completed with that going off for paint. Oil tank is in fabrication now as well as the boiler tank. Should be putting those systems in after tail is painted and back next week. Bottom line is plane is on fast track to completion. Fortunately all previous stumbling blocks have been removed and plane is being swarmed by the Sanders team. Pretty awesome sight to see the activity around the plane, so focused. What a beauty she'll be. All I can say is Furias should be awesome!!!!I'll post more updates next week after more work is accomplished. We are on track for late July early August testing. Matt J

Preparations for the first race of the 2010 season are well underway here in Abu Dhabi. Our team hangar has been assembled and our technician Jason is feverishly working to get the Edge race ready. This year, Red Bull Air Race is introducing a new HD camera system that all of the teams are currently installing. It may seem like a small detail but adding a large electrical box with a battery to power the camera system brings up concerns of plane weight and the CG (center of gravity). We're dealing with these issues as well as adjusting minor things on the plane to comply with new rules and regulations for 2010. Right now, the most important thing is to ensure we are ready to SMOKE ON come race day in our blazing fast machine. ...

For Planes TV to get to all the events featured in this DVD would be an impossible task, so other production companies have contributed footage from the likes of...

In Loving Memory.... Al Goss

The Warbird and Air Racing Communities lost a great friend this week. Al Goss was flying his beloved T-6, Warlock with his crew chief, Steve Ballard, on Wednesday morning when tragedy struck.

The story started in 1981, when Al decided to make the trek over the hills to the National Championship Air Races. Twenty-nine years later, he was the favorite of both fans and racers alike.

A crop duster by day, his real passion was Warlock and the people who surrounded him and supported him while he raced the pylons at Reno. He had two sons, Randy and David; a daughter, Sandra; and five grandchildren; but he adopted the rest of us and made everyone feel like family.

He finished 2nd in the Gold six times, or as he would say, "the first loser". But, he won it all in 2004. Walking away with the title National Champion after all those years meant quite a bit to him. Regardless of win or lose, his devoted fans loved him.

The Warlock Crew would show up every year and work from dawn to dusk. They polished that airplane, mingled with the crowds and watched with great interest all of the races over the many days. Photographers were welcomed and would be found huddled on top of the Warlock trailer with their camera equipment trying to get the best pictures.

I always wondered how he managed to assemble such an amazing array of people. He was magnetic in that way. Still, he always seemed to give much more than he received, although, I'm sure he would disagree.

The big bash every year was the Warlock Party. It happened on Wednesday night as a way to celebrate the beginning of the races. There was always a band, dancing, singing and friendship being passed around the ramp. Everyone was there and Al knew all of them.

From a pilot’s standpoint, he did it all. He flew for a living, and lived for his flying. When an airshow needed him, he was there. When a friend was in need, they knew they could call him anytime. He was the hardest working and the kindest man I have ever known.

I met Al in 2004, my first year racing in the Biplane Class. He was a mentor and a friend to me. After every race, I would get debriefed by him. If I did well, it was a big hug and if I made mistakes, he would shake his head and share with me his insight.

I felt as though I was the luckiest pilot in the world to have this great man take such a personal interest in me and my flying. But, he did that to so many of us. From the phone calls I have received since the news went out, everyone was touched by him. Every interaction made people feel special. He remembered wives’ and childrens' names, details of everyone’s life and showed deep concern and compassion towards all of us.

In addition to his children and grandchildren, Al had a special friend in Anita. They were inseparable and just about the most adorable couple you’d ever meet. They would dance together at the Warlock Party and everyone would stop and watch them. As loving and amiable as Al was, Anita just multiplied the affection.

His passenger on that day was Steven Ballard, a long time friend, Fed-ex pilot and flight instructor. Steve was also a fixture at the Air Races as part of the Warlock Crew each year.

This year was to be Al’s 30th Anniversary racing at Reno. I know Team Ruby will put together a special memorial to our mentor this year and it's likely other teams will do the same.

But for many of us, without Al, Warlock and the team, the races will never be the same.

At this time, no public memorial has been planned. When details become available, we will share them with you. Until then, please keep the Goss and Warlock families in your hearts. For we have all suffered a great loss.

Blue skies and tailwinds forever, my dear friend, I will always love you and remember your kindness.

Airspeed Comes Up for Air from Airspeed by Stephen Force (Steve Tupper) | You might be wondering, "Where the heck is Airspeed?" And you could be forgiven for wondering that. I haven't gotten a new episode out for some time. But it's all going to be worthwhile. I haven't been idle! Unless you've hidden your iPod under a rock, you know that I've been working on the Acro Camp movie project with virtually every spare moment of time. It turns out that there's an unreal amount of stuff to get in order for making a movie. And, being that I'm both a lawyer and persnickety about how the legal structure of a project works, I've had to draft virtually every document from scratch after researching the subject matter pretty thoroughly…

Winter comes to Australia's loneliest jet runway from Plane Talking by Ben Sandilands | Wilkins gets busy, photo Martin Boyle © Commonwealth of Australia - After a 'summer' in which melt water caused hassles for researchers, and even an Airbus A319, the darkness and cold of polar night has closed in on the Wilkins Blue Ice runway, a 70 kilometres and three hours long big tractor ride from Australia's Casey Station. The last flight on the Hobart-Wilkins run flew on March 2, but the photos and stories that can be accessed on the Casey web site are too interesting to overlook any longer…

Museums Special Section - Aboard the Intrepid, Putting a Fighter Jet Back Together - NYTimes.com from http://www.nytimes.com/ THE Grumman F9F Cougar had seen better days, some of them flying in Navy fighter squadrons in the 1950s. But then it was retired and ended up spending years in a park in New Jersey as perhaps the world's coolest jungle gym. Now it's a mess — the once-smooth metal skin rough and spotted, holes here and there. The fuselage is in two pieces. And the wings have been taken off, which, for a high-performance jet aircraft, is a real insult…

Swisscopter Dragonfly DF1: Tip-Jet Helo That Might Actually Work! by Martt - During the first minute of this video you're very likely gonna think: watch out, crazy people alert!  But that will soon transform to something more like: hmm, this thing is very interesting and really seems like a totally stable flying platform with serious potential.  What strikes me is that this may be the first time we've seen a truly viable solution to the idea of having a tip-powered rotor.  As the video of the Hiller HJ-1 I posted a while back shows, the tip-powered rotor idea has been around for a long time.  It just seems like there's always been hurdles too high to clear that have keep the concept from having a genuine application…

Dragonfly jet-powered helicopter runs on H2O2, shuns traditional tail rotors (video) from Engadget by Tim Stevens | Your average whirleybird is driven by a big motor in the middle, spinning the blades one way and, as per Newton, rotating the body of the craft the other. A tail rotor counteracts the force, but a more efficient solution is to have the rotors power themselves, which is exactly how the Dragonfly DF1 works. It has tiny, hydrogen-peroxide jets on the blade tips, spinning them up without pushing the body of the helo in the other way -- though a small tail rotor is still needed to turn the craft. It's much like the tech that propelled James Bond toward his waiting DB5 in Thunderball, but unlike that jetpack this copter can fly for up to 50 minutes…

Aviation Trivia of the Day by JP Santiago | One of the more unique flying boats to be built was the Dornier Do 212 which began its water trials in 1942. Design work on the Do 212 began in 1938 at the Dornier-Werke facility in Freiderichshafen, Germany in collaboration with Dornier's Switzerland-based subsidiary who would be responsible for construction of the prototype with the Swiss registration HB-GOG…

A Fairey What? from Ares by Bill Sweetman - When Jetcal commented on an earlier post that the JSF was shaping up as a modern-day Breda Ba88 and I remarked that the Lince was an Italian Fairey Battle, less historically minded readers might have been confused, However... The Fairey Battle was not, as you might think, a brawl on Old Compton Street but one of Britain's less successful bombers. Resembling a scaled-up fighter, it looked fast in pre-WW2 publicity photos and was intended to survive by speed, with only a single .303 machine gun for rear defense…
