Students Set For Air Race Classic - Inside Indiana Business (press release) | After a three year absence, a trio of aviators from Indiana State University is preparing to make its mark in an annual transcontinental race for female pilots.  The Air Race Classic begins June 16 and will take the trio on a 2,692-mile race across the mid-section of the United States. It begins this year in Concord, Calif. and ends June 19 in New Cumberland, Pa. Indiana State is one of 50 teams involved in the race. Eleven colleges and universities have teams in the field....

Tulsa woman races through the skies for third straight year - Tulsa World  | Sand Springs aerial racer Emily Applegate and flying partner Zia Safko have taken a page out of the past in their continuing bid to be some of the fastest and most adept cross-country pilots in the nation. For each running of the Air Race Classic, Applegate and Safko dawn “Rosie the Riveter” jumpsuits, complete with an arm patch depicting the World War II era symbol of the female contributions to the war effort.  They call themselves “The Racing Rose,” put their hair in curls, wearing polka-a-dotted headbands and red lipstick....

Air Museum Dedicates B52 Model - KXNet.com | Today, a ceremony dedicated the refurbished B52 model at the Dakota Territory Air Museum to Chief Master Sergeant Richard Etchberger who served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. Before his deployment, he worked at the radar station in bismarck, his only domestic station during his enlistment. On March 11, 1968, He lost his life saving three comrades who had been maintaining and defending a radar installation in Northern Vietnam. In 2010, Etchberger posthumously became the only Chief and E-9 to ever receive the Congressional Medal of Honor....

After long hiatus, US Air Force vet flies again in B-25 - Montrose Daily Press   | The minute the twin propeller engines of the World War II-era bomber Maid in the Shade cranked up with a gritty hum, a familiar smile returned to the face of one honorary passenger. Bob Hansen, a Montrose resident, grinned knowingly as the engines reached full power and the historic aircraft tiled back and lifted off the runway at Black Canyon Jet Center. It was a reunion of sorts for Hansen, a former pilot instructor, who was now airborne in a B-25 for the first time in nearly 60 years. Hansen was stationed at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Okla. as a student in 1955 and later as a pilot instructor in 1957. During his service training pilots, Hansen logged more than 1,000 hours in B-25s....
