Shalliol understands that this is a tough time not only for airports but for any other fuel-dependent industry. He would not be surprised if more airlines implement changes to deal with economic conditions.

What Do The Readers Want?

The online version of The Indy Transponder is now three months old! Roger and I are very excited (and pleasantly overwhelmed) by the response that we've received from the community. We want to thank all of you for the encouraging remarks and the support.

Our desire to see air show and aviation heritage news in one place helped us realize there was a niche to fill with the Indy Transponder. (There is more on the back story in My bio). To reiterate our "Flight Plan" - The Indy Transponder is a collection of headlines, links, and articles related to Aviation Edutainment which include air shows and air racing. Additionally we highlight aviation heritage, developing youth’s aero interest, Indiana regional aviation, and other articles of interest. Continue to visit and you will find guest articles from various participants and key people engaged in our industry.

Having said that - we realize the Indy Transponder has a lot of room for improvement in fulfilling it's mission. We have a long list of things we want to see happen here. We've had some guest posts already, but we are continuing our efforts to increase the numbers of those who can contribute. We've been enjoying the regular updates regarding the WACO Glider (last update here), and the Society of Air Race Historians have submitted their first air racing history post. However, we could use some contributions from the West Coast, some input from the air racing teams that will be at Reno this year, stories from the hangars of those doing restorations (and if you have your own site, give us a heads up so we can add it to the watch list), and input from volunteers at the various events taking place this season. All would be welcome contributions.

Also, let us know about:

  • Aviation events in your area - we will share the news here.
  • Any stories we've missed.
  • Opportunities - something in your area that deserves attention?
Additionally, Roger and I are aware that the community should have a large influence on how the Indy Transponder grows. Besides aggregating all the air show and aviation heritage news in one place, what else would you like to see? Do you like the contributions we've had thus far? Are there others you'd like to see? What are we doing right? What are we doing wrong? Can we do something better? Is there a performer or air race team you would like to see more news about? Just like the Transponder in your aircraft, we send out a signal, or a news story, that we hope you find useful and your return signals us to your interest.

To all our readers - thank you.

Your support is greatly appreciated!

Recent GAO Report Cites Major Problems for Smithsonian; Will Corporatization Help? from Warbirds Online by Ryan Keough
For many years historic aviation enthusiasts have criticized the
Smithsonian Institution and namely the National Air and Space Museum for lack of action in many of the restoration projects that fill the facilities of the Garber Annex in Silver Hill, Maryland. With the opening of the Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles, many felt that the situation would change sooner than later, and in some cases it has indeed changed. Notable recent additions to the Udvar-Hazy display such as the Northrup P-61 Black Widow show that some progress is being made, but is it enough? Notable aircraft such as the Boeing B-17D Flying Fortress “The Swoose” continue to deteriorate, despite the fact the National Air & Space Museum lacks a B-17 in public display.

Midwest Taildraggers' Rendezvous 2008

We attended the Midwest Taildraggers' rendezvous today. It was hosted by EAA Chapter 900 at the Post-Air Airport here in Indianapolis today. We promoted the event earlier this week in the Indy Transponder. We had a good time, saw a good number of planes, and had some great conversations. I sent my daughter on "photo recon" while I was talking to some people in the hangar, and I'll try to get those pictures up tomorrow evening. In the meantime, here's one that I really liked:

The PHI helicopter was there also, and I had an interesting conversation with Floyd, the flight medic. He informed me of all the additional certifications and training that a medic must receive to become a medic on one of these birds. I was really impressed and learned a lot about what these people do that I didn't know before. Maybe we could get one of these folks to do a guest post someday and share some of the things they would most like the readers to know.

Also attending the fly in today was Grace on Wings. I got to speak to Hal Blank for a few moments. He said that in addition to the time spent flying with patients, many of the pilots and medics have given their own finances to make Grace on Wings' missions successful. These really are a dedicated group of people. I didn't know, so I asked. What makes them different from Angel Flight? Angel Flight gives rides to those who need them, but if the patient needs medical monitoring of any type, they don't provide that. That is where Grace on Wings is needed. Grace on Wings makes the trips possible WITH the medical monitoring that a patient would need. (Photo is from the Grace on Wings website. The plane was not at this event.)

The weather cooperated throughout the morning. A few had to leave as weather started moving in from the North shortly after lunch, but we all got in an enjoyable morning and I'm looking forward to the next event.

Look out... here comes another shameless plug for my favorite airshow, EAA's Airventure. I know you're probably sick of hearing me plug it but what can I say, it's one of the best shows in aviation. Probably the highlight of this show is the fly-in part, and if you're not familiar with the venue let me throw you some calibration, nearly 10,000 airplanes will be attending the show... Way cool. Now with the high price of gas, the organizers at EAA are offering a number of ways to cut down on the cost of your trip.

Wild Brew Yonder -- Coming Friday June 20 - Technorati
Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos, California hosts a wonderful airshow called the "Vertical Challenge" each year. Wild Brew Yonder is the amazing pre-show event held the Friday night before. It combines the best our local micro-breweries have to offer with a not-to-be-missed night time helicopter airshow. As our resident helicopter pilot Dwayne would say, "anyone can fly a helicopter upside down... ONCE!". Well, the Red Bull team did it last year, and are coming back for more. ...

When was the last time you went to an airshow? - Technorati
I can’t remember the last one I attended, but it has to have been back in Comox. So with Russ plugging away for weeks organizing the accommodations for the crews and working the static display, I packed up the kids and we trucked over to Portage La Prairie on Saturday last for Armed Forces day and a little entert-’air’-nment. What a hoot! The kids thoroughly enjoyed the day. ...

Sunderland Airshow 2007 Pictures (Part One)
You might recall that I went to the Sunderland International Air Show on 29 June last year. At the time, I worked on a few pictures that particularly stood out for me, and put those on show on Flickr and here. Two of them actually got a fair bit of attention on Flickr, which was nice. Anyway, I did say that as soon as I found the time, I’d put up a lot more of the pictures I took that day. Well, I’ve finally found the time ...

From: lenashburn2065@aim.com Subject: History of Timing & Scoring at Reno Air Races Up at five, load up the car, breakfast at six, on the ramp promptly at seven, for at least eight straight days. Quebec Airshow - from Technorati
Quebec Airshow We spent an amazing Fathers Day weekend in Quebec City attending the Quebec City Airshow. Adam's Dad flew in from BC on Thursday and we headed out to Quebec on Friday afternoon after various errands. We met Gillian, Raffi, Sofia and Joanne at our hotel and got a good sleep before our early rise the next morning. Adam heard that it might take us a while to get to the airport in the morning (anyone been to the Abbotsford Airshow?) due to all the traffic, so it was suggested that ...

Oh the places I’ve been and the things I’ve seen - Joepariginal.com
Some of these places I ended up at just because I got in the car and started driving, but sometimes I actually had a reason for being there. I won’t go through the whole list but Mackinaw was just a whim, and Detroit/Windsor was for the Red Bull Air Race World Series, which was ultra cool. I stopped in Brighton on the way back from that for dinner.

LUCAS OIL POWERS MIKE WISKUS PERFORMANCE AT
2008 INDIANAPOLIS AIR SHOW
Lucas’ aerobatic pilot is among civilian and military performers scheduled for
Aug. 22-24 event benefiting children’s charities

(Indianapolis, Ind.) – Lucas Oil Products is known for being the power behind vehicles that generally stick to the ground. On August 22-24, however, the company will be showing off its interest in flying, as the sponsor of aerobatic pilot Mike Wiskus in this year’s Indianapolis Air Show.

Wiskus joins a long list of military and civilian performers scheduled to appear in the 12th annual
Indianapolis Air Show at Mt. Comfort Airport. Headliners for this year’s charity event are the U.S. Air Force’s F-22A Raptors, with the U.S. Army’s parachute team – the Golden Knights – and the U.S. Navy’s Super Hornet also on hand to wow the crowds.

If you’ve never seen a pilot such as Lucas Oil’s Wiskus perform, you’re in for some breathtaking sights! Smoke, noise and hard-core, high-flying aerobatics are on the agenda.

These additional pilots will also provide Air Show attendees with exciting thrills and chills:

Gene Soucy and Teresa Stokes – Wingwalking & ShowCat Biplane Aerobatic Solo
