AIR TATTOO OFFERS GLIMPSE OF RAF’S FUTURE

Visitors to this summer’s Royal International Air Tattoo will have a second chance to view the RAF’s next generation airlifter when the Airbus A400M returns to RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire 12 months after making its UK airshow debut.
The aircraft, which is set to replace the RAF’s Hercules C-130 fleet, will be known as ‘Atlas’ when it enters service in late 2012 or early 2013. It is designed to carry troops, equipment and supplies and can travel further and faster than most current in-service airlifters. It is also far more flexible.
Airbus Military’s parent company EADS gave the go-ahead this month (March) for the first series aircraft to enter production. The first A400Ms should finally roll off the production line later this year.
Airbus’s chief military test pilot Ed Strongman will be at the controls of the A400M when it displays at the airshow, at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on July 16 & 17.
The Air Tattoo’s Sponsorship Development Manager Francesca Heap said: “We enjoy phenomenal support from the aerospace industry and what better way to showcase this than with an exciting new Airbus airframe. It’s good for the Air Tattoo, it’s good for the aerospace industry it’s good for the RAF and it’s good for the thousands of people who will see it display at RAF Fairford this summer.”
In addition to celebrating its 40th anniversary, this summer’s Air Tattoo, on July 16-17, will host a gathering of specially-decorated ‘Tiger’ aircraft from the NATO Tiger Association. ‘Tiger’ aircraft come from NATO squadrons that have a Tiger or Big Cat in their emblem and their association marks its 50th anniversary in 2011. The ‘operational’ spotlight STAR 11 will focus on aircraft and equipment involved in the roles of Strike and Reconnaissance.
Advance tickets, priced from £39, are available by visiting www.airtattoo.com or calling 0800 107 1940. All tickets must be purchased in advance. All accompanied under-16s go free.

AIR TATTOO FLIES TO SUCCESS IN THE US

THE marketing team behind last summer’s Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire has been recognised with two awards at a prestigious ceremony in the US recently.
The 2010 Air Tattoo’s TV advert tied second place for the best commercial advert for a large show whilst its website (www.airtattoo.com) came third in the ‘large show’ category at the award ceremony held in Las Vegas. The awards were presented by the International Council of Air Shows at its annual convention in Nevada which is attended by airshow organisers from around the world as well as representatives from the military.
The Air Tattoo TV advert featured a Typhoon pilot from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire preparing to take off followed by dramatic footage of displaying aircraft. The website award comes shortly after the site was revamped to include an interactive map and video gallery.
Air Tattoo’s Deputy Director of Marketing Helen Webb said: “To be recognised in this way by such an influential organisation is fantastic. The marketing team works hard each year to bring to life all of the excitement and thrills the Air Tattoo has to offer.”
The artwork for the 2011 Air Tattoo has been designed by Swindon born modern aviation artist David Bent who has been inspired by the Air Tattoo since his first visit in 1999.
The Air Tattoo, which takes places on July 16 and 17, is held in support of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust and is the world’s largest military airshow. This summer’s event will look back over the past four decades as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. It will also host a gathering of specially-decorated ‘Tiger’ aircraft from the NATO Tiger Association. ‘Tiger’ aircraft come from NATO squadrons that have a Tiger or Big Cat in their emblem and their association marks its 50th anniversary this year. The operational theme will be STAR 11 focussing on Strike, Attack and Reconnaissance.
Earlybird tickets, priced £34, are available from www.airtattoo.com or by calling the Air Tattoo box office on 0800 107 1940 until February 28, 2011, priced £34. All accompanied under 16’s go free.

AIR TATTOO ADDS VULCAN TO STAR LINE-UP

The legendary Vulcan bomber has been added to the Royal International Air Tattoo's flying display next weekend after its operators won a last-minute battle to have the aircraft airworthy in time for the world's largest military airshow.

The Vulcan, one of the most iconic warbirds of the Cold War era, was restored to flying condition in 2008 following a massive £7 million public campaign.

In order to display each year, the aircraft has to pass a series of rigorous tests, and operators overcame both financial and technical challenges to ensure that once again, the world's only airworthy Vulcan would take to the skies for another season.

Vulcan XH558, which was built in 1960, enjoyed a 33-year career in the RAF, including service during the Falklands War. Along with the Valiant and the Victor, the three aircraft comprised the Royal Air Force's legendary V-bomber force, designed to protect the UK from nuclear threat from the 1950s to the 1980s.

The ambitious restoration of XH558 was supported by a £2.5 million grant from the Lottery Fund, a £500,000 donation from philanthropist Jack Hayward, commercial sponsors plus contributions from more than 20,000 members of the public. The campaign also received significant fundraising support from the Air Tattoo throughout the restoration project.

Last year, its appearance at the Air Tattoo was considered by many to have been the highlight during the airshow's eight-hour flying display.

Air Tattoo Chief Executive Mr Tim Prince said he was delighted to be welcoming back such a popular and unique aircraft.

He said: "It's been touch-and-go as to whether the aircraft would be ready in time but I am absolutely thrilled it is now able to join us. There are few aircraft flying today that can match its beauty and sheer thunderous power. In my mind, it is one of a handful of legendary aircraft, including the Spitfire and Concorde that has the ability to stir the emotions."

The Royal International Air Tattoo is staged annually in support of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust.

RAPTOR SET FOR RAPTUROUS AIR TATTOO RETURN

It’s a case of ‘second time lucky’ for one of the world’s newest and most exciting jet fighters when the F-22 Raptor makes a welcome return to the Cotswolds this summer – two years after its planned UK debut appearance was rained off.

Now the aircraft, from the US Air Combat Command, will be returning to the Air Tattoo on July 17&18 to demonstrate why it is capable of outperforming any existing fighter aircraft in air-to-air combat. The Raptor represents a new generation of fighter aircraft incorporating state-of-the-art stealth technology, sophisticated weaponry and vectored thrust giving it an unrivaled combination of secrecy, power and maneuverability.

Air Tattoo Deputy Director of Air Operations Robert Windsor said he was delighted to see the aircraft return to perform at the Air Tattoo.

He said: “The Raptor is one of the jewels in the crown of military aviation and its display in July will be among the highlights of the seven-and-a-half-hour flying display. I recall that the pilot and his ground crew were tremendously friendly and professional throughout their stay with us – despite their obvious disappointment. I am really pleased that they will finally be able to perform for our large and appreciative Air Tattoo audience!”

The Air Tattoo, which is held in support of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust, is the world’s largest military airshow and attracts around 300 aircraft from across the globe. This summer’s event will stage special tributes marking the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. In addition to the flying display, visitors can enjoy a large static aircraft park plus a wide range of ground-based activities including a concert stage, fairground rides, and the interactive Tri@RIAT area for youngsters. The bad guys also recognised the radial's many qualities, and all the "real" German and Japanese military aircraft wore radials: Dorniers, Focke Wulfs, Junkers, Aichis, Kawanishis, Mitsubishis and Nakajimas—radials ruled! ...

Recent GAO Report Cites Major Problems for Smithsonian; Will Corporatization Help? from Warbirds Online by Ryan Keough
For many years historic aviation enthusiasts have criticized the
Smithsonian Institution and namely the National Air and Space Museum for lack of action in many of the restoration projects that fill the facilities of the Garber Annex in Silver Hill, Maryland. With the opening of the Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles, many felt that the situation would change sooner than later, and in some cases it has indeed changed. Notable recent additions to the Udvar-Hazy display such as the Northrup P-61 Black Widow show that some progress is being made, but is it enough? Notable aircraft such as the Boeing B-17D Flying Fortress “The Swoose” continue to deteriorate, despite the fact the National Air & Space Museum lacks a B-17 in public display.
