You Gotta See This: Ice Pilots on National Geographic (with video) - Airline Reporter | Watching television is not one of my favorite things. Most shows just annoy me and I haven’t had cable TV in years. Sure, I watch stuff on Hulu and Netflix, but that is about it. Aviation Airshow Air Race Photography Discussion - View Single Post - Mike Brown retiring from Air Racing? from http://www.aafo.com/
Hello all,On behalf of the September Pops team, Al and I would like to thank all of you for your heart felt support and kind words through this process. How amazing it is to hear from everyone with such positive things to say! It has been 11 years since we began racing and the joy it has brought us is indefinable. As the years progressed and airplanes increased, so did our crew. They all worked incredibly hard and should be proud of everything they accomplished. As you all know, it takes year round effort, time and investment to field these planes and operate a race program of this caliber. It was always pursued with a fifth gear pined mentality and a heart felt desire to win, by all crew members. We have incredible fans and appreciate the unwavering support, despite where or what our status was each year. This sport is very unique and we are so proud to have been a small part of it. Although the future is changing for us, we will not forget the fans, friends and incredible memories we have made. Thank you again to each and every one of you!Monique Brown and Al Loving

Armadillo Aerospace Takes Level 1 Lunar Lander Prize from Slashdot by Soulskill
jedibfa writes "Las Cruces International Airport came alive with applause and cheers yesterday afternoon as John Carmack's Armadillo Aerospace took the first place prize for the Level 1 challenge of the Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge, winning $350,000 and bragging rights. Adding to the excitement of the day, shortly before completing their second qualifying flight, Armadillo Aerospace and The Rocket Racing League announced a joint program to develop a sub-orbital tourist vehicle that will fly out of the New Mexico-based Spaceport America and cost less than $100,000 per ticket. On Sunday, the team will have three opportunities to go for the Level 2 challenge that more closely approximates the required performance for a real lunar landing. Good luck, Armadillo Aerospace, both on Sunday and in your new endeavor!" We discussed preparations for the challenge last week. Several other readers have contributed additional coverage, including the Space Fellowship's live blog of the event, the website for Truezer0, another team participating in the challenge, and a VentureBeat article discussing the economic downturn in space exploration, and how the X-prize competitions figure in. Today's Level 2 challenge will be covered live via webcast.

Victory Days 2008 - Terre Haute, IN

Terre Haute, IN was the destination for today's outing. The whole Indy Transponder crew attended the Victory Days event today. That's right both of us! Roger did the driving and was accompanied by his wife. My oldest daughter, Megan, joined us also.

Below is a slide show with some of the photos I took throughout the day.

VictoryDays2008

Some observations.
  • You'll see a picture in the slideshow of an equipment tag. What is unique about the tag is that it belongs to the arresting cable system that was once in place at the airport in Terre Haute.
  • Children are always fascinated with machinery, whether it flies, or drives (note the little guy at the orange tractor)
  • Teaching my daughter about some of the events of WWII was easier at Victory Days. I found the actors and volunteers very helpful as they filled in some blanks. My daughter was able to learn about the war bond drives that took place stateside while the troops were overseas.
  • Practice does make perfect - it helps make successful jump missions too.
  • My favorite plane for the day - the A-26 Lady Liberty. (Wikipedia entry for A-26).

History Lessons Come Alive at Victory Days

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October 1, 2008

From home front to war front, Victory Days authentically tells the story of WWII America

Terre Haute, IN—Two thousand area school children will descend upon the grounds of Victory Days on Friday, October 3 to get a glimpse of real-life during WWII. And you, too, are invited to come and see what the buzz is all about as Friday will serve as the official Media Day. Friday is a full program day at Victory Days, complete with Home Front Displays, War Front Exhibits, and special guests on-hand to tell their personal stories. The gates open at 8:30 am and close at 5pm.

Dr. Suellen K. Reed, Superintendent of Public Instruction, Indiana Department of Education, has agreed that Victory Days 2008 represents an outstanding educational opportunity for Indiana school students. Dr. Reed’s office supplied resources to the Victory Days’ team to assist in program development in support of State’s Core Standards of Education.

The Indiana House of Representatives and Indiana Senate have passed Concurrent Resolution #28 that recognizes Victory Days as a living history museum designed to honor, preserve, and perpetuate the memory and sacrifices made by Americans during World War II.

“We are thrilled with the high number of class registrations in our inaugural year--the teachers are very enthusiastic about the opportunity to bring history to life for their students, and it’s shaping up to be a very big day,” reports Diana Streevey King, Victory Days General Manager. “We are looking forward to sharing Victory Days with school children for years to come.”

Students will enjoy an educational field trip that inspires excellence, enhances understanding of American and foreign history surrounding WWII, and puts the experiences of 1940’s Americans into present day perspective. Teachers can customize their own learning adventure by incorporating a range of war front and home front exhibits including: Active U.S. Army airfield, battle re-enactments and mission briefings, battalion field hospital, period cars, tractors and farm equipment, mess operations, 1940’s living room, victory quilts, rationing, salvage, and live radio broadcasts.

Parents and Grandparents can help students prepare for their field trip to Victory Days by sharing some of their own memories from the 1940’s. Better yet, plan to come back on Saturday or Sunday and bring the entire family for a time of story sharing and fun.

Wal-Mart is the primary sponsor for School Day through their participation in our School Scholarship program. More scholarship dollars are needed to offset the costs of developing these amazing authentic living museum exhibits. Participating in the scholarship program is easy and information is available at
www.VictoryDays.org .

Victory Days is a not-for-profit educational organization recognized under section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Proceeds benefit the Wabash Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Victory Days Living Museum. For more information about Victory Days visit

Beloved Warbirds Coming in Strong at Victory Days

VICTORY DAYS 3-5 October 2008 Terre Haute International Airport - Hulman Field

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - September 22, 2008

Beloved Warbirds Coming in Strong at Victory Days
From home front to war front, Victory Days authentically tells the story of WWII America

Terre Haute, IN—Military aircraft, especially vintage WWII, are what the public clamors for and visitors to Victory Days 2008 will be treated to a remarkable display of their favorites. Military and pre-war civilian aircraft will be on display throughout the event. Expect military primary, basic, and advanced trainers, liaison aircraft, cargo, fighter, light, medium and heavy bombers including:

-Memphis Belle B-17
-Lady Liberty A-26
-Wicked Wabbit and Hun Hunter P-47s
-Black Sparrow C-47
-Piedmont DC-3
-Wildcat
-TBM’s
-P-51 Mustang
-Black Cat PBY Catalina
-CessnaT-50 Bobcat, “Bamboo Bomber”
-B-25 Mitchell

“These aren’t just old airplanes!” declares Paul King, Victory Days Executive Director. “They have authentic histories with life and death stories, and many, such as the Memphis Belle, even have genuine celebrity status. The Memphis Belle, for example, is one of only a handful from this class of bomber aircraft that still flies today. The B-17, also known as the Flying Fortress, is the most recognizable bomber of WWII, highlighted in many WWII movies. The Memphis Belle in particular, is known for being the first to complete the required 25 combat missions. It then returned to the states on a publicity tour to raise support for the war.”

These aircraft will be flying during the event, on hand for static display, and participating in conjunction with historically significant re-enactor events. You might see some of them making the rounds in the morning, as a reminder to get yourselves down to the Terre Haute airport to take a closer look at the many Warbirds that are participating in Victory Days 2008.

Four lucky people will have an opportunity to purchase a ride-along with the Liberty Jump Team paratroopers on Saturday or Sunday as they make their jump flights from the Black Sparrow C-47. Four individual rides will be auctioned at the Friday night, Oct. 3, Hangar Dinner Dance. (Tickets for the Hangar Dance are available online at
www.victorydays.org .)

Expect a range of historically significant sights and sounds at Victory Days including an active military encampment, live radio broadcast, the Liberty Jump Team, vintage car exhibit, 1940s living rooms and kitchen, antique tractors, a quilting exhibit, battalion field hospital, small arms and weapons, jeeps, tanks and demonstrations and great food. There is something for the entire family.

“This is just what you’d expect from the event that is establishing itself as the WWII historical event of the year,” said Darrel Zeck, Director of Public Affairs, City of Terre Haute. “We are extremely pleased to have attracted this unique patriotic event to be hosted at Terre Haute International Airport-Hulman Field. With the level of interest we’ve been seeing from the community, we expect Victory Days to become an annual favorite for years to come.”

I lead the first lap and pulled the power back to climb power, and was immediately passed by Robbie Patterson flying Lady Jo. He moved ahead of me by about a half a lap I think by the end of the race. I was also passed by Doug, but decided to bump the throttle up a ways since he was not too far ahead, and passed him again. I finished 2nd, but Robbie moved up to the Silver Race the next day so I had the poll for tomorrow's start. This was real exciting since I'd be flying next to my dad, pretty cool.
