Dayton Air Show will feature 14 spectacular acts in 2013

...Thunderbirds cancel due to Sequestration

Dayton, Ohio – The Vectren Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger will fly as-planned on June 22nd
and 23rd despite budget cuts announced by the military due to Congressionally-mandated sequestration. A recent Department of Defense memorandum confirmed that all military aerial teams will cease public performances as of April 1, 2013. This includes the USAF Thunderbirds, who were scheduled to appear at Dayton this year. The Air Show had hoped that Congress would reach an agreement permitting the military jet teams to fly, but with the April 1st deadline rapidly approaching, such an agreement appears unlikely.

This year's show will feature a spectacular lineup of some of the nation’s top attractions. A total of 14 acts will fly each day in the feature show, including: “FIFI”, the only flying B-29 in the world, will create a "Great Wall of Fire" atomic bombing reenactment; there will be both a MiG-17 and an F-86 Sabre flying demonstration; the AeroShell Formation Aerobatic Team will perform; Melissa Pemberton’s Edge 540 flying aerobatics will be on display; Skip Stewart will perform high energy aerobatics; Jane Wicker Wing Walking will risk all; and the "School Time" jet-powered school bus will roar down the runway at 300+mph.

"With such a tremendous lineup of top attractions already in place, we felt it was important to continue the 38-year tradition of Dayton and move forward with the 2013 show," stated Michael Emoff, United States Air and Trade Show Board of Trustees Chairman. "We think spectators will be excited by not only the thrills of these professional acts, but also with the overall quality of this year's show both in the air and on the ground," he added.

In addition to previously planned attractions, Air Show officials announced today the addition of the following new features:

One of the most famed fighters of WWII is the F4U-5N Corsair and Vectren Dayton Air Show spectators will get to witness this unique gull-winged aircraft both in flight as well as on static display. The first U.S. fighter to fly at 400 mph in level flight, the Corsair was designed for aircraft carrier-based service. Called “Whistling Death” for the distinctive sound the engines of the Corsair made in a dive, US Marines referred to the Corsair as their best friend for the excellent air support it provided when troops were pinned down on the ground. Dave Folk will fly the Corsair, which is housed in Greenwood, Mississippi in the winter and Kalamazoo, Michigan in the summer.

The Warbird Heritage Foundation’s A-4B Skyhawk, flown by Paul Wood of Waukegan, IL will return to Dayton after its first appearance in 2012. The Skyhawk was a light bomber/attack aircraft flown by both Vice Admiral James Stockdale and LCDR John McCain (now Senator McCain) during the Vietnam War. The Skyhawk appearing at the 2013 Vectren Dayton Air Show is painted to represent aircraft BuNo 148609 flown by LCDR Ted Swartz, who shot down a MiG-17 over North Vietnam with an unguided ZUNI rocket. This was the only air-to-air kill by a Skyhawk during the entire Vietnam War.

Team Fastrax, a world-class skydiving team located in Middletown, Ohio has also been added to the 2013 Vectren Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger lineup. To be considered as a Demo Team member, individuals must first have at least 1,000 jumps and meet stringent professional standards. As a result, Air Show spectators will witness a thrilling collection of precision maneuvers that display the ultimate skill in skydiving. Kicking off the show each day with a 7,500 square foot U.S. flag (the world’s largest), Team Fastrax is sure to leave a lasting impression on Air Show spectators as the team has performed around the world and at high profile venues such as NASCAR, the NFL and MLB.

Along with historic aircraft flying each day, the Vectren Dayton Air Show will present an impressive number of classic aircraft on the ground. Recently added to static display are the Douglas C-54 Skymaster “Spirit of Freedom” and the Consolidated B-24 Liberator “Diamond Lil”. Each of these storied aircraft served at various times for the US military during WWII: the C-54 was made famous in the Berlin Airlift and the B-24 was used in both the European and Pacific theaters. Spectators are sure to enjoy close-up views and tours of these amazing aircraft of yesteryear.

Tickets for the popular Chairman’s Club, Dannon Pavilion, Family 4 Pack, and Blue Sky Chalet are now on sale, offering an attractive range of seating options. Tickets can be conveniently purchased through the show website at www.daytonairshow.com. Many of these venues sell out early, so don’t wait to get your tickets!

Beginning May 13, 2013, deep discount general admission tickets will also be available for purchase at over 100 Kroger stores in the Dayton-Cincinnati region.

The Vectren Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger is produced by the United States Air and Trade Show, Inc, a 501(c)(6) not-for-profit Ohio Corporation that relies on sponsorship and community support to offset the cost of producing the event. The Dayton/Montgomery Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates that the show has a $3.2 million annual economic impact on the region.

Vectren Dayton Air Show adds attractions... Thunderbirds expected to perform despite cuts

Dayton, Ohio – Vintage jet aircraft, barnstorming and fire have been added to the 2013 Vectren Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger. Air show officials also announced that despite anticipated cuts in the defense budget, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds are expected to make their scheduled appearance. This year's show will be held on June 22nd and 23rd at the Dayton International Airport, marking it the 39th consecutive year for the popular summer event showcasing Dayton's aviation heritage.

Appearing for the first time in Dayton will be the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17F, a high-subsonic fighter jet aircraft used by the North Vietnamese as their primary Air Force interceptor during the Vietnam War. Piloting the MiG-17 will be Randy Ball of Tyler, Texas. Randy is the only pilot in North America (Civilian or Military) to hold an FAA Unlimited Aerobatic rating for both Day and Night jet fighter performances, and he is one of the most internationally recognized aerobatic pilots of jet aircraft. Powered by a Klimov VK-1F afterburning turbojet engine enabling a top speed of 711 mph, the MiG-17 became a formidable foe to U.S. pilots during the early years of the Vietnam conflict. In addition to flying, the MiG-17 will also be on static display.

The famed North American F-86 Sabre jet will also display its capabilities in Dayton this summer. The Sabre entered USAF service in 1949, becoming the primary U.S. air combat fighter in the Korean War. Like the MiG-17, the F-86 will fly as well as be featured on static display. Powered by a General Electric J47-GE-27 turbojet with a top speed of 687 mph, the F-86 was the fastest U.S. aircraft of its time. Notable American pilots flying the Sabre during their careers included Major John Glenn, Colonel Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, and Lt. Colonel Virgil "Gus" Grissom. The F-86 at Dayton will be flown by veteran pilot Paul R. Wood, founder of the Warbird Heritage Foundation in Waukegan, IL. This is a beautiful aircraft that spectators won't want to miss.

Also added to the Vectren Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger lineup is the "Great Wall of Fire”, a spectacular display of explosive excitement. Rich's Incredible Pyro will stage this amazing pyrotechnics display as a reenactment of the world's first atomic bomb drop. The performance is completed with the only flying B-29 Superfortress, "FIFI", making a rare in-flight appearance to stage the drop. Previously announced in December, "FIFI" is flying in the show as well as being on static display. The B-29 heavy bomber "Enola Gay" is credited with ending WWII when it dropped the first atomic bomb "Little Boy" on Hiroshima on August 6th, 1945. Spectators will have an exciting opportunity to see, hear (and FEEL!) the reenactment of this historic event. The "Great Wall of Fire" is the creation of renowned special effects’ expert, Rich Gibson, call sign "Dynamite Boss".

History comes alive as Jane Wicker brings the Barnstorming era to Dayton with her heart-stopping wing walking performance. Jane is not your average wing walker. She will demonstrate the daring and breath-taking art of wing walking from the Golden Age of Aviation in a way never before seen in Dayton. Wing riding is not for this damsel; her wing walking style is the real thing. With no safety line and no parachute, Jane amazes the crowd by climbing, walking, and hanging all over her beautiful 450 HP Stearman aircraft that she affectionately calls “Aurora”. Not only will she be on top of the airplane during aerobatic maneuvers, including inverted flight, but you will also see her climb between the wings and witness moves that no other wing walker is brave enough to try. Spectators are sure to gasp as this daredevil demonstrates in true form the unbelievable art of wing walking.

“These are awesome additions to our 2013 lineup,” stated Michael Emoff, Chairman of the United States Air & Trade Show Board of Trustees, producers of the event. “We have put together one of the most diverse and entertaining shows ever seen in Dayton. Watch for more announcements in coming weeks as we continue to build the show program,” he added.

Show features previously announced include: U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds Demonstration Team, AeroShell Formation Aerobatic Team, Melissa Pemberton Edge 540 aerobatics, Skip Stewart aerobatics and the School Time jet-powered school bus.

As earlier announced, ticket prices for the 2013 Vectren Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger will remain unchanged from 2012. Tickets for the popular Chairman’s Club, Pavilion, Family 4 Pack, and Blue Sky Chalet are now on sale, offering an attractive range of seating options. Tickets can conveniently be purchased through the show website at www.daytonairshow.com. Many of these venues sell out early, so don’t wait to get your tickets!

Beginning May 13, 2013, deep discount general admission tickets will also be available for purchase at over 100 Kroger stores in the Dayton-Cincinnati region.

After spending several years consulting with Convair on his delta wing work that would result in the XF-92, the F-102 Delta Dagger, F-106 Delta Dart and B-58 Hustler, he joined American Collins Radio in 1950 to head its small aeronautical division in Iowa…

Wichita Aero Club slates online summit from General Aviation News
A top management panel featuring the senior executives of Wichita's airframe manufacturers will close out the Wichita Aero Club's year on Tuesday, Dec. 15.
The luncheon, which will be held at the Wichita Airport Hilton, will feature the first annual Wichita Aero Club "On-Air Summit." The event will be broadcast live over the Internet
"The December meeting of the Wichita Aero Club will be a special opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the challenges, plans and issues facing the major aerospace firms that call Wichita home," noted Dave Franson, Wichita Aero Club Executive Director.
"Calling this event the 'On-Air Summit' isn't totally 'tongue in cheek,' either. It actually brings together industry leaders just as the G-8 Summit does with
heads of state and it's focused on the air industry. By broadcasting it live over the Internet, we're adding another dimension to the event." ...

Calling all kids…Hello? from AOPA Pilot Blog
Ray Larner of Lapeer Pilot Center in Lapeer, Mich., just posed an interesting question on the phone. I promised I would put it in our blog and see what happens.
How do we light a fire under kids ages five to 20? "We are really, really, letting future generations down," Larner said. He got into aviation, and chose to enter the U.S. Air Force, because of Sky King, Chuck Yeager, Bob Hoover, and all World War II aces. "It was a romantic time in aviation." Now his granddaughter is determined to make it into the U.S. Air Force Academy. Why? Because Ray is around airplanes all the time, and her father encourages her ...

With its infamous Bollywood- and Marcel Marceau-themed publicity stunts, Rafael has earned a reputation for making corporate videos that are high on creativity but low on credibility.

As I turns out, not bad at all. The videos are conventional ...

As I look back on over 20 years of flying, I realize how much I've learned - not just about flying itself, but about taking on new challenges, making risk acceptable, and pushing away the fears and anxieties which hold us back from what we'd really like to do. One of the things I've learned is that you need to be Pilot-In-Command. You should listen to experts, but then you need to rely on your own judgement and make your own decisions.
I don't even have to close my eyes to picture my first REAL cross country flight. I had been flying my Sunburst ultralight for about 6 months; I was a cautious pilot and all of my flights so far had been within 10-20 miles of my home airport. My flying mentors - other ultralight pilots - were encouraging me to stretch my wings. It was a beautiful day and they invited me to fly with them to an air show 60 miles away. I was nervous about going that far - especially as we'd be flying across the Columbia River. That sounded especially scary. And I didn't feel confident about my navigation abilities. But they were encouraging and supportive - telling me that I was up to the flight.
So now we're in the air. There are six ...

"You're going to see pilots perform aerobatics inside of Expo Hall that will rival any air show you've seen at an airport," Stitt said in a release.

Spectacular Views from rand peck, a life aloft by Rand Peck
... I've witnessed sparkling silver sunsets over Nantucket Sound and the Elizabeth Islands in a Twin Otter and watched magnificent sunrises advance over Mt Rainer, Mt Washington and Mt Fuji from a 757. I've gazed upon the lights of Manhattan while flying low up the Hudson and toured Washington DC while flying low down the Potomac in a DC-9. I've wondered of the vastness of our Great Plains and marveled at our Rocky Mountains, buried deep in brilliant white snow from an Airbus. Chicago, Boston, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles are spectacularly luminescent at midnight from 35,000 feet in a veteran 727. The soft, muted colors from our dessert southwest during an early morning departure from Phoenix are breathtaking, as is your first glimpse of Diamond Head or Haleakala after six lonely hours over the Pacific. My first view of London, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Tokyo and Nagoya through the windscreen of a DC-10 was a moving experience. As exhilarating as these events have been however, nothing quite prepared me for the natural beauty that I was about to experience over Greenland. ...

WIND STILL UNDER THE 'WINGS OF FREEDOM'

Middletown Air Show Will Go On Sept. 20-21

MIDDLETOWN, OHIO (Sept. 18, 2008) – "The show must go on." So says Rich Bevis, chairman of Middletown Aviation Foundation, organizer of Middletown Airport's first air show in over 30 years. Despite the disruption in power as a result of Sunday's storm, "Wings of Freedom" will take place, featuring dozens of war birds, top aerobatic performers, ground displays, along with a car show, military re-enactors, paratroopers and aviation-oriented kid zone.

Bevis notes, "Power was restored at 9 a.m. today, but we already had a big generator scheduled to take care of the vendors, which would have provided more than enough power for any other needs we may have had. We were determined not to let the community or our sponsors down," he says.

Among the scheduled acts: The B-17 "Flying Fortress" featured in the movie "The Memphis Belle;" precision formation flying team Scream'n Rebels in WWII era T-6 Texans; a P-51 Mustang; and a tactical demonstration by a MiG-17 Fresco Vietnam war jet fighter. Other "war birds" expected to participate: A TBM Avenger; BT13 Valiant; T-28 Trojan; Cessna O-2 Skytrain; Nanchang CJ-6; 179AW Mansfield: C-130; Sikorsky MH-53 Sea Dragon and MH-60 Pave Hawk. There also will be a flyover (Saturday only, 12:30 p.m. EST) of a C-5 Galaxy, the largest aircraft in the U.S. Airforce.

In addition, there will be six top aerobatic performers including pilot Brett Hunter flying a Magnum Pitts S2C, Cliff Robinson barnstorming in his 450 Stearman biplane and Jay Hodge in a Russian Yak-52. Other acts include Emerson Stewart (Citabria) and John Black in a SuperDecathlon. There also will be military re-enactors, a commemorative D-Day paratrooper performance, ground displays of a variety of different aircraft and a car show. Kid zone will feature a climbing wall and inflatable slides along with "Top Gun" photo ops and dog-fighting flight simulator.

The Middletown Aviation Foundation is a non-profit organization created to support regional aviation and contribute to the community and the economic engine of Middletown and surrounding regions through the creation of community events at Middletown Regional Airport and other venues.

To purchase tickets visit the airport at 1707 Run Way. For more information about the show, call Rich Bevis at (513) 217-4777 or visit www.middletownaviation.com.
