One of the weirder incidents of World War II from Bayou Renaissance Man by Peter | I'm doing research for a forthcoming series of Weekend Wings articles on strategic bombing. In the process, I've been reading a lot of books that are long out of print, neglected by many modern scholars, but containing much valuable material. One of them is 'Flying Fortress' by Edward Jablonski, published in 1965. In its pages, I found this story, that I thought might interest my readers as well. I've included links to the unusual place names and other subjects.

This Blackbird got back — the rare SR-71A known as “Big Tail”  from Travel for Aircraft | The Air Force Armament Museum is located on the outside of Eglin AFB near Valparaiso and Niceville, both in Florida. Displayed on the grounds are several historic aircraft with the most popular likely to be the Lockheed SR-71A “Blackbird” (no official name for SR-71s) standing front and center. All the SR-71 aircraft (also informally known as “Sleds” and “Habus”) were strategic assets and likely all flew historic missions, though most of these flights will remain classified for years to come. This particular Blackbird has a unique trial modification which added 9 feet (2.7m) beyond the tail to carry a new optical bar camera as well as more electronic countermeasures. The testing indicated that aerodynamics were not unduly affected — but the additional equipment did not substantially add to mission capability either. Since the flying of this SR-71 was not harmed the extension remained, this unique aircraft was given the nickname of “Big Tail” and served several more years inhabiting a flight envelope solely with its Blackbird brethren…

Spotted For Sale: 4,000 HP Douglas A-26 Invader - Budget Priced!  by Martt |  It's true, I haven't done the research to confirm this, but could there possibly be another way to buy a 4,000 hp flying machine for just $160,000? Fact or fable: hunt is on for buried Spitfires - The Australian   | IT'S the Lasseter's Reef of warbirds -- a rumoured stash of mint-condition Spitfires hidden underground in rural Queensland.   Many have searched for the legendary British fighters, reportedly still in their crates and hidden since the end of the World War II around the Queensland town of Oakey, but so far nobody has been able to lay claim to what would be a multi-million-dollar find.  They are the remnants of 656 Mark V and Mark VIII Spitfires that were delivered to the RAAF during the war.  RAAF records show that …

Hey Boeing, How About Making A 737 USB? from AirPigz
It’s pretty clear that Boeing isn’t listening to me since my heartfelt plea for a 787 to spend a little time in AeroShell Square at Oshkosh 2010 was ignored, but that won’t stop me from trying to send more good ideas their way. Aerobatic pilot Greg Poe defies gravity - Times Community Newspapers
Few are not familiar with the mythical character of Icarus, who became so enraptured by the glory of flight that he flew too close to the sun, thereby melting the wings of wax and feathers fashioned for him by Daedalus. While Icarus' fate acted as an allegorical injunction against man's reach exceeding his grasp, it has not kept generations of aviators from reaching for the sky. Veteran aerobatic pilot Greg Poe is one of those who was never dissuaded by the heat of the sun or the tug of gravity.
A native of Boise, Idaho, Poe was still an adolescent when he entered the field of aviation. The young airman cut his teeth on early flight expeditions at Strawberry Glen airport along the Boise River. Poe started flying in a Cherokee 140, but quickly transitioned to a two-seat, two-cylinder engine Champ.
"I actually learned a lot about flying in that airplane," Poe said. "I learned the basics, the really important basics."
According to Poe, his affinity for flying was inspired by the early space program. ...

Day 2 of AcroCamp from Life on the Road as a Pilot
Day 2. I think that Don and Barry really know what they’re doing. Instead of going right back into more advanced maneuvers, we had a little warmup session (remember, this was WAY out of my comfort zone and I needed to get back in the groove). I can’t read Barry’s writing of what we did that morning, but I tweeted, “Is it really only day 2 of #AcroCamp? Feels like longer, 'cause I feel like I'm getting the hang of it (hanging from my straps, that is).”
We campers were also having the time of our lives  ...

Ballooning In Napa Valley from Wheels Up
The air over Napa Valley was crisp and clear. Amply suitable for a balloon flight over the lush green wineries. A little to the south, at Napa County Airport (KAPC) the winds were gusting 20-30 mph. Fog laced the valley, lowering visibility and hindering flight. But that was not a factor for us, as we raced north in vans to Yountville where Balloons Above The Valley has its launch site.  ...

You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. The wildest of blue yonder tributes at Charlotte track - News Observer
Weather permitting, the sky over Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday is going to be filled with aircraft of the ages.
The always highly anticipated prerace show for the Coca-Cola 600 this year will feature a tribute to military aircraft that have flown for our nation in many of its wars.
The flyover, continuing the track’s annual and laudable Memorial Day tribute to U.S. troops, will include a World War I biplane that’s almost 100 years old. World War II planes, such as the beautiful, sleek P-51 Mustang – a few of which are now in the hangar of NASCAR team owner Jack Roush – will be up there, too.
P-51s were flown in combat by the famed Tuskegee Airmen, courageous African-American pilots who escorted B-17 bombers into the heavily defended airspace over Germany. ...

A French aeronautics association Saturday examined the engines of a Concorde passenger jet at an air museum outside Paris to determine if they could be used again.

Concorde May Fly Again from AVwebFlash Current Issue
An Air France Concorde was to have undergone borescope tests Saturday to determine if its four engines can be safely started in advance of a possible return to flight. The aircraft is at a French museum at Le Bourget Airport, where it was mothballed seven years ago when Air France and British Airways ended supersonic service after decades of financial losses and the spectacular crash of a Concorde in Paris in 2000 that killed 113 people. There was no word at our deadline on the outcome of the tests but it's hoped the aircraft can soon be fueled and readied for taxi tests before returning to the air for heritage flights. It's hoped the aircraft can be airworthy in time for a flight over the opening ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

...1912 -- Pioneer aviator Wilbur Wright dies from typhoid fever, at the early age of 45.
His death marks the end of his extraordinary partnership with his brother Orville, which culminated in 1903 with the first, powered airplane, Flyer, capable of sustained, controlled flight on Dececember 17, 1903.
Orville made the first flight, airborn for 12 seconds. Wilbur took the second flight, covering 853 feet (260-m) in 59 seconds. By 1905, they had improved the design, built and and made several long flights in Flyer III, which was the first fully practical airplane (1905), able to fly up to 38 minutes and travel 24 miles (39-km). Their Model A was produced in 1908, capable of flight for over two hours of flight. They sold considerable numbers, but European designers became strong competitors.
Orville sold his interest in the Wright Company in 1915. ...

Victory Days 2008 - Terre Haute, IN

Terre Haute, IN was the destination for today's outing. The whole Indy Transponder crew attended the Victory Days event today. That's right both of us! Roger did the driving and was accompanied by his wife. My oldest daughter, Megan, joined us also.

Below is a slide show with some of the photos I took throughout the day.

VictoryDays2008

Some observations.
  • You'll see a picture in the slideshow of an equipment tag. What is unique about the tag is that it belongs to the arresting cable system that was once in place at the airport in Terre Haute.
  • Children are always fascinated with machinery, whether it flies, or drives (note the little guy at the orange tractor)
  • Teaching my daughter about some of the events of WWII was easier at Victory Days. I found the actors and volunteers very helpful as they filled in some blanks. My daughter was able to learn about the war bond drives that took place stateside while the troops were overseas.
  • Practice does make perfect - it helps make successful jump missions too.
  • My favorite plane for the day - the A-26 Lady Liberty. (Wikipedia entry for A-26).
